(District 201N2) Ki-Lines Monthly Newsletter Issue 9: March 2018 President Rob s Comments Thanks again to David and Lorna Wardle for hosting the meeting at their home on 22 February. It must have one of the best views in Kiama. Geoff Heinecke again did a great job in providing the fish and chips. Good news on the Clean Up Australia front. The area we used to clean, Blow Hole Point, is so clean there is no work to be done. Community attitudes have changed so much for the better in this regard over the last 30 years or so. Harvey Diener is looking for a new area for next year which we could attend to. We need a member to be responsible for the Red Shield appeal collection in May. Any volunteers? Get well wishes for Brenda Brenda Hungerford is still in hospital after am Asthma attack, chest infection and bronchitis. She has now contracted a bacterial bug. Get well soon Brenda. Driver Reviver Easter is once more upon us and we have Driver Reviver at Nungarry commencing on Thursday 29th March and concluding on Sunday 1st April If you would like to do a shift we still need 2 people on Thursday 29 th March 4pm-9pm, 1 person Friday 12-4pm, 2 people Saturday 12-4pm, 2 people Sunday Please ring Bob Gray, or Reports The Memory Walk and Jog for Dementia Australia is on again on Sunday March 4th from 8.10am. You can register online on memorywalk.com or on the day from 7.00am at Stuart Park Wollongong and walk 2km or 5km or jog 9km. If you would like to just sponsor, you can sponsor my daughter Emma's team 'Walk for Helen' online using the link Alternatively you can give me the money and I will pass your donation on. Thank you. Jim Webb Red Cross A team of 16 Lions will be collecting for Red Cross during March. Jim Webb is coordinating and will get the material to them early in March. It is suggested that we collect during the weekend of the 24th and 25th but it can happen any time. Easter is the following weekend. All monies and unused material to be returned to Jim Webb after you have completed your collection. Any extras are always welcome to assist the local Red Cross branch - let Jim Webb know. 1

2 Carers Cottage update March 2018 The new roof!! Thank You Lions. It has come to my knowledge, well after the event, that my nomination for an Order of Australia award came from a committee of Lions, with the approval of the then President, Tony Grainger. I am both honoured and grateful that my peers in Kiama Lions would think so highly of me. I treasure the thirty-six years that I have been in the club and the friendships I have made. Thanks again to those who made the award possible. Regards, Gerry Mac Our Club's Outward Bound Sponsorship Update Following our Board's approval to sponsor three teenagers to attend the Outward Bound Navigator Course for 15 to 17 year olds, Jerry Granger-Holcombe, David Wright and Hilton Bloomfield conducted final interviews with four suitable candidates, in the presence of parents, on Sunday 25th February 2018 and selected two who attend Kiama High School and one from Corpus Christi Catholic High School. The fourth worthy candidate has been encouraged to apply again for next year's Course when she will still be under 18 years of age. The Course will be held in the Australian Alps during the April 2018 School holidays and we are confident that all three will benefit materially from this life changing experience. On their return they have all agreed to make a presentation at our Club's dinner meeting to be held on 24th May Clean Up Australia As members would be aware our club has been involved in the annual Clean Up Australia project, specifically in an around the Blowhole Point. Over the past few years it has become obvious that very little rubbish has been collected on the designated Clean Up day. It is my opinion that it is time that an alternative location be considered for our attention. Accordingly, after some discussion with President Rob and Secretary Jim, Clean Up Australia will not be undertaken this year. I d appreciate any suggestions for an alternate site so that Kiama Lions can again be involved. Harvey Diener For Your Diary Members Activities and Events March 2

Murder Upstairs Downstairs at Upton Priory The cast are very busy with rehearsals for the play opening on Wednesday the 14th March. This is a fabulous community volunteering effort. Only three people involved in the production are members of Lions. Ticket sales are doing quite well but we do need everybody to encourage their groups of friends to attend. It is a fun social activity and doesn't require Lions members to spend time cooking donuts or BBQs - just encourage your friends to come along. Support the people supporting Lions. 4 The Big Red Kidney Bus is coming to Kiama where a morning tea will be hosted by the Royal North Shore Hospital & Kidney Health Association on the 8th March am at the Big 4 Easts Holiday Park, 30 Ocean Street, KIAMA. Kidney Health Association organises the Media to be present which gives us an opportunity to promote our Club and Lions involvement in the Big Red Kidney Bus project. RNSH provides the morning tea. We just need to turn up in our Lions shirts for a cuppa. 5 Undies Fun Run Sunday 18 th February Many thanks to Peter David, Ray & Jeff for helping feed the Cupids Undie Run crew today! Very much appreciated. And thanks too, to Red Rooster for donating the coleslaw! We had a good day, and I hope you and your crew did too. Everyone was very happy. Kiama raised a lot of money, awareness was made, and that's what counts. We really hope you'll come on board next year too...
