1 Some SSAC Volunteer Opportunities: The information below provides the website for each organization. During the year, it is strongly suggested that each group have a specific coordinator to each group for each volunteer organization who will communicate sign-up deadlines and current opportunities. Coordinators will communicate information either at the meetings or by between the volunteer organization and specific group. Your son/daughter may also sign up individually with some of these opportunities. If you sign up individually, please let the volunteer organization know dates and times you are volunteering. It is also a good idea to let others in your group know that you are volunteering at an event as this will lead to friends/others in your group wanting to volunteer as well. Belmont Village 1 st Saturday of each month, 3:30pm 4:30pm Volunteer at Belmont Village Senior Living, located at 5701 Crestridge Rd., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275, (310) Work with the seniors helping them with horseracing, darts, and other games. All activities are led by a game coordinator. Boys simply show up and help the coordinator and the seniors play the games. We are sharing this opportunity with another Los Hermanos group. Must sign up for specific dates. At least 2 volunteers needed for each date. Contact: Roopa Reddy - roopared@gmail.com Shared Bread First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach, 243 S. Broadway in Redondo Beach. Website: 60 Help feed a warm meal each Wednesday evening to those in need. Wednesdays Food prep 1:30pm, food service 5:40-7pm, clean-up 6:15 7:30pm. It's in the NW corner of Broadway and Torrance Blvd, one block west of Pacific Coast Highway and just up the hill from Redondo Beach Pier. The parking lot is on the North side of the building off of S. Broadway. Additional parking is available on the street and in the bank parking lot on Torrance Blvd. You can go volunteer individually any Wednesday no advance registration required. (registration required for groups)

2 Book Buddies Molina Foundation Book Buddies Warehouse, 3680 Skypark Dr., Torrance (btw Hawthorne and Madison). Volunteers at Book Buddies help put books into the hands of children who need them. Volunteers assist in processing books for distribution at Torrance warehouse. Book Processing Consists of: Sorting, Counting, Packaging, Choosing books for recipient groups. Donate new or gently used books or Host a Book Drive. Register with Dawn:missdawnbayer@yahoo.com You must call and register, bring signed release form (from website, in volunteer handbook ) Friendship Circle Check website for specifics: website Most activities are during the school year only (except for summer camps) Director Jason Flentye, x102 Sunday Circle one Sunday a month for younger disabled kids at a South Bay community center. FC brings toys, games, etc. and sets up around the room. As kids arrive, they are paired with volunteers, who go off one-onone (or 2 or 3 volunteers-on-one) and play a game, read a book, etc. for about ½ hour. Then there is some group music lead by an adult, and then an entertainer of some sort --- all kind of like a birthday party format. Life Skills one Sunday a month for disabled 13 year olds and up. They take them on outings to the pier, on a fishing boat, etc. to help teach life skills i.e. purchasing something waiting in line, paying for the item, etc. Again, kids are paired with volunteers who accompany them and help them out during the outing. Sports Night one Thursday a month at Mira Costa Gym (5:30-6:30pm). There is a sports coach there that leads games. Volunteers shadow and help the kids with the games (i.e. basketball, volleyball, ) Sports Sundays every Sunday during sports season where they play baseball with the kids, basketball during basketball season, soccer during the soccer season, etc. Most of these take place in El Segundo on Sunday afternoons (1:30pm-3:30pm). Hammerhead Camp: a one week Beach Camp in Manhattan Beach usually in August- Must commit to all 5 days. Other camps are available durng the summer. Check with community helpline for dates and times-info below.

3 Habitat for Humanity Habitat Home Store, South Figueroa Street, Gardena, CA 90248, Store hours: Tues. - Sat. / 9am -6pm, web-site: The Home Improvement Store recycles overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials, furniture and home decor donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals. These donated items are used in two ways: to build simple, decent homes for low-income families and to be resold to the general public to finance Habitat for Humanity building projects. Volunteers are needed to help run registers, unload trucks, greet and help customers and prepare donated items for display. Shifts are 9-12 or 1-5, Tuesday Saturday. Must be 14 to work at store. Go to website and click the volunteer button to make a profile for yourself. Check site for builds/projects & to sign up at the home improvement store on your own. They also have A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) which is mostly paint & landscape. Toberman: 131 North Grand Avenue San Pedro (310) Many volunteer opportunities from hands on tutoring, coaching sports to Clothing and Food drives for their kitchen and residents. Tree Musketeers Assist elementary school students in becoming environmentally conscious. See website for volunteer opportunities Pediatric Therapy Network / Camp Escapades Sign-ups for Camp Escapades are in April. Camp is 1 st 3 weeks in August. We will also staff one respite night at PTN during the year. Las Amigas Horse Show Horse show at Ernie Howlett Park in June. Palos Verdes High School and Peninsula High School Clean-up several Saturdays throughout the year to do trash clean-up, focusing on the edges of campus-notified through SSAC Boys and Girls Club, Harbor City- Volunteer at the annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the club and help with other needs of the club. Participate in a Holiday drive for the club.

4 Kenny Nickelson Memorial Foundation for Homeless Veterans: Two Stand Down Days for the assistance of the homeless. One on Veteran s Day Weekend a second in the Spring around Easter. I cannot recommend this event more highly! Also counts for CSF at both High Schools. Other events and donations needed Check website for sign-up information. Donated items needed as well. Contact for info. Sketcher s Pier to Pier Walk: Usually in October in the SouthBay, but is done at different times of year at other locations. Check website for info. You can do as a group or individually. When in the SouthBay, it can also count for Peninsula Education Foundation as well-we partner this event. Relay for Life: In June, after school gets out at Peninsula High School Form a team and walk for Cancer for life! See website for information on how to form a team. Walk for someone in your group or family a member who may be fighting cancer. Volunteer Center South Bay Cravens Avenue, Torrance - (310) Contact for other opportunities in the South Bay not listed here. They have many opportunities for our kids. Press Friends Assist elementary students with writing with the objective being a finished newsletter for the school! Travel to local South Bay schools necessarysome may be up to thirty minutes away-but a great opportunity. Check in with contact for further opportunities for volunteering in our area. PV Land Conservancy Director: Ann Dalkey Call to set up a time to come and help the Conservancy. There are many activities, mostly the cleaning and clearing of trails.

5 BIG Sunday- Dedicated one weekend in the year-first weekend in May for all volunteer groups in the USA to volunteer time o someone or something. Go to website and search for events in the South Bay or set up your own event for your group and complete that project on Big Sunday weekend. Report your event to the site and get published online! You can volunteer for your city-contact your local City Hall and event coordinator for a job. Events done in the past for Big Sunday include, trail clean-up, fence painting, bleacher painting, Park Clean-up and flower planting. Volunteer at your home town! Heal the Bay See the Website for local activities. Pick a weekend and go! SSAC Annual Beach Clean-up Day First Weekend immediately following the 4 th of July Weekend, 10:00am, at the bottom of the main ramp on Torrance Beach. Watch s for info. All SSAC groups meet at Torrance Beach, take a group picture and set off down the beach to collect trash. This is an excellent first group outing for new groups. Stay the day for beach fun with friends! Other Local Seasonal Volunteer Opportunities Be on the look-out for events to ed to you from Julie Robinson. These are generally specific seasonal event help, such as school carnivals, fund raisers or baking needs. As chairs, you should also be aware of events in the community. Feel free to offer help to these events and open the events to the SSAC group if the need is greater than your group can provide. Make sure to get prior approval from SSAC before taking on a specific event and make sure that you will not be double dipping your hours. Only specific pre-approved events can be counted as double hours-kenny Nickelson (as an example) can count for SSAC hours and CSF Hours. If you are involved in another volunteer organization, such as Assembly, Boy Scouts or local Church Group, you may only count hours for one group. You may not count hours worked for all of the groups you are involved. If you work one hour for Assembly, you work one hour for Assembly, not one hour for both Assembly and SSAC You may never count hours as double hours-you work one hour, you get to count one hour, not two-even if the organization you are working for are offering double hours.
