Send to: Lion Patti Gauch H: bygoneacres@cebridge.net We are more than halfway through this Lions year but there is much more work to be done. Did you know that more than half of all new Lions join a club in the second half of each year? Now is the time to recommit yourself to the goals set for your district by your District Governor. Here are some key action steps that can help you achieve your goals: Charter New Clubs How many new clubs have been chartered in your district? So far, more than 200 districts have formed at least one new club, and almost all of those districts are experiencing positive growth. Make chartering new clubs your focus right now. Work with your DG team and GMT/GLT district coordinators to charter new clubs in your district. Remember, chartering new clubs is the one area that allows you to personally control the growth inside your district. Promote Family and Friends Month Work closely with your clubs to plan a successful Family and Friends Month event in April. Family and Friends Month is a time for clubs to invite family and friends to learn more about their clubs and what we do as Lions. It's also a great opportunity for clubs to invite new members and involve family and friends in service. Download the Family and Friends Month flyer today, then encourage your clubs to host a special event in April! Invite New Members Work with your DG team and GMT/GLT to invite new members to existing clubs, and put an emphasis on membership satisfaction to boost retention in your district. Continue to use the LCI resources available to you to meet your goals. Don't wait...keep working hard to finish the year strong! Kind regards, Barry J. Palmer Your International President "If we dream boldly and pursue our dreams, we will achieve more than we ever believed possible. This is our time to lead. This is your time to achieve." GLOBAL SERVICE ACTION CAMPAIGN LIONS LAUNCH WORLD RELAY IP Barry is inviting clubs to help kick off Family and Friends Month by joining the Lions World Lunch Relay on April 4 th. The Lunch Relay is an international event that brings Lions around the world together to share their clubs with family and friends over a meal. Clubs can even participate in special contests that reward them for promoting service, membership and fun! Learn more about the Lions World Lunch Relay and share this special Family and Friends Month event with your clubs! DREAM ACHIEVER AWARD UPDATE Period 3 of the Dream Achiever Awards is underway! Congratulations to district governors who earned recognition in Period 2. Visit the Dream Achievers website to see Period 2 achievers and find the tools you need to succeed! Remember, Period 3 runs from January 1 to March 31, and all district governors can earn recognition. Keep promoting the key resources that have given clubs new tools for success. CEP gets clubs performing at their highest level, Just Ask! helps clubs recruit with confidence and success, and the Membership Satisfaction Guide can help increase member satisfaction so that new and seasoned members remain Lions for years to come.

2 Hello Lions, From Your District Governor - DG Tom Zickefoose I have had a busy month of January. I have made 12 club visits and would like to thank all of you for your hospitality and warm welcome you have shown my wife, Lion Marian, and me. It is greatly appreciated. We also were at the Winter Retreat and our District had the most people in attendance with 35. If you never been to one please try and go next year you will have a wonderful time believe me. I would like to tell you a little about the redistricting that you will be voting on at the District Convention this year so please have all your delegates there to vote on Sunday. This will not affect your club at the club level or what you do for your communities but it will make our district grow from 5 counties to 9. It will run from Carroll County to Ashtabula County and, if passed, it will affect our Eye Care Foundation. All club Presidents have received the plan and the map of this plan and it should be discussed at your club meeting to let your delegates know how to vote for your club. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at our District Convention this year. The convention chairs have put together a great weekend for us so let's not let them down. They worked really hard to put together forums for everyone to enjoy and learn at the same time. Thank You convention chairs. Remember JUST ASK ONE person to become a member! Yours in Lionism DG Tom Zickefoose Hello Fellow Lions, From Your First Vice District Governor - FVDG Barb Sorkin January certainly has been a cold month. Lucky that I picked my home county for January visits. Only had one visitation cancelled on account of the cold weather. Chaired the Long Range Planning Committee Meeting. Attended the "Winter Retreat" in Mt. Sterling which is were Deer Creek State Park is located. What a great weekend it was, visiting with long time Lion friends and making new ones that joined just at a table for a meal. The seminars were great, some on Lionism and others on every day topics. There is always something to do at the Winter Retreat. The Retreat ended Sunday morning after a buffet breakfast. If you have never attended one of these Retreats, try it for next year as it will be at Salt Fork State Park which is a little closer to home. Yours in Lionism FVDG Barbara Sorkin From Your Second Vice District Governor - SVDG Bob Allgood Hello Lions, I hope you are staying warm; Lion Liz and I are trying too. I would like to say, WOW first six months as your SVDG has been a learning experience but a very fun time. I enjoy going to the clubs and seeing how everyone is doing. Remember, as we look to the next six months of Lionism, just ask one non-lion person to Visit your club. Thank you for all you do in the name of Lionism. Yours in Lionism, SVDG Bob Allgood 2

3 SPRING CONFERENCE International President Barry Palmer has encouraged us to share our dream this year. The dream I ll share with you is that of spring. Listening to forecasts of lows in the teens below zero, as I m writing this article, it seems that spring is but a dream. Having said that, planning is well underway for the District 13-D Spring Conference Spring will be here soon, or at least eventually, and the Spring Conference won t be far behind April 26 th to be precise. It will be held again at the Alliance Middle School, close to the center of the district. PCC Paul Metrovich and I are working hard to plan sessions that will be beneficial to all attendees. Our district has come to expect excellent training sessions and this year should continue to meet or exceed expectations. Spring Conference 2014 is not just for incoming club officers, although training sessions will be offered for presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, treasurers, membership chairmen, and tail twisters. Each club is different, but good officer training helps all clubs. A session will also be held for zone chairmen and there will be several sessions for anyone. Topics will include service project ideas, fundraising ideas, Lions fundamentals, the Lions Learning Center, public relations, Leo clubs, and serving on the district cabinet. Two important announcements are in order for this year s conference. For the first time, sessions in how to use the district s eye screening equipment will be repeated throughout the morning. Everyone wanting to learn about the equipment will be able to do so without having to miss their officer training. The other big announcement is the schedule. We will start about 9:00am with a continental breakfast and social time beginning about 8:30am, as we have done in the past. New for this year, we are planning to have lunch and the wrap-up done by 1:30. There will be no sessions after lunch, but we will have lunch later than in past years. More information will be in the next newsletter, but for now mark your calendars, April 26, 2014, and commit to learning more about the office you may have been elected into and Lions in general. Your attendance will not only help you, but will also help your club and our association. We re looking forward to seeing you this spring at Spring Conference 2014! By IPCC David Gauch, District 13-D GLT Coordinator 3

4 District 13-D Governor Tom Zickefoose has agreed to participate in On February 22nd, pm at Lake Milton State Park Craig Beach Benefiting American Cancer Society Relay for Life! The Catch: We have to raise $1000 for him to jump. See Lion Marian Zickefoose or 2nd VDG Bob Allgood to donate! 13D LIONS SUPPORT THE YAGER FAMILY Canfield Lion Rich Yager and his family were involved in a very serious midnight automobile accident while coming home from a family Christmas gathering in Norwalk, Ohio. An oncoming car skidded on ice and crashed into them. Lion Rich suffered a broken pelvis and a broken right leg. His wife Carol had multiple vertebrae broken. Their son Matt's foot was broken in several places. Their daughter Caitlin was killed in the crash. Lion Rich and Carol are currently in rehab at the Hillside Hospital in Howland, Ohio. As Lions, we consider ourselves family and as an organization, we are reaching out to help Lion Rich and his family. There has been a fund set up to help the family with their medical expenses and we encourage you to donate. As they recover and return home, we will help them with their meal preparations and rides to and from medical and other appointments. There will be more information on the opportunities to help in the weeks to come. See below for more information about donations. In addition to visits, cards, and phone calls, we are doing more. A Memory page has been set up to remember Caitlin, one of the most giving persons we have ever met. She gladly gave her time, talent, and treasure to more causes than we can list. You can or mail your thoughts and pictures of Caitlin to the address below. Contributions for the family s expenses will be handled by the Lions Club. MEMORY PAGE: Please fill out your favorite memories of Caitlin Yager to be presented to the Yager family to help comfort them at this tragic time. These may be ed to info@kasmerinsurance.com or direct mailed to: Kasmer Insurance Agency, LLC. 400 E.
