Send to: Lion Patti Gauch H: bygoneacres@cebridge.net We were all new Lions once, and we have stayed Lions for a reason. We got involved in service, leadership and club life. We've had good times as members, and great Lions have supported us along the way as there were times we had to overcome difficult challenges. It's that feeling of satisfaction that keeps our clubs healthy and our Lions coming back. Now that you've wrapped up a successful Membership Growth Month in October, I encourage you to make your club experience the best it can be for your new members. You can do this by listening to them, getting them involved in service projects and supporting them throughout that all-important first year of membership. When you do, they'll remain Lions just like we did! Build a foundation for success and membership satisfaction by offering New Member Orientation. Orientation helps new members better understand your club, our association, and their opportunities as a Lion. The Lions Mentoring Program pairs new members with experienced Lions to help new members set goals, plan activities and develop leadership skills. Remember, membership satisfaction is the key to keeping all members happy whether seasoned or new! Kind regards, Barry J. Palmer Your International President "If we dream boldly and pursue our dreams, we will achieve more than we ever believed possible. This is our time to lead. This is your time to achieve." GLOBAL SERVICE ACTION CAMPAIGN Today, there are more than one billion people who do not have enough to eat. One person out of six lives in a state of chronic hunger. Lions have an opportunity to show the strength of our worldwide network during a special service action campaign, "Relieving the Hunger." During December and January, we invite you and your club to join Lions around the world to help relieve hunger. Organize projects that mobilize your club members to make a difference in your community by helping those who don't have enough to eat. Visit The Global FoodBanking Network or Feeding America for volunteer opportunities near you. If your local food bank does not have volunteer opportunities available, you may wish to consider other service projects such as preparing and delivering food baskets to families in need or planting a community vegetable garden. View the 2013 report, Healthy People Depend on Healthy Food Systems, prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO Lions and Matteo's Dream in the 2014 Rose Parade Calling all Lions! Help spread the word about Lions' participation in the 2014 New Year's Day Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. The parade theme is "Dreams Come True," and Lions selected Matteo's Dream as the entry to depict what Lions do. Watch our video for the story behind Matteo's Dream, a park for children of all abilities built by 45 Lions Clubs and 3,000 volunteers in eight days. This story shows what we as Lions do every day: Make dreams come true. We're asking for all Lions around the world to share our video with at least one friend outside their club through , Facebook or Twitter with the hashtags #MatteosDream and #RoseParade. Read our blog, Facebook and Twitter for more stories leading up to the Rose Parade.

2 Hello Lions, From Your District Governor - DG Tom Zickefoose I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This was not a very busy month for me with Thanksgiving and then I went out of town for a week but I did get a couple of Club visits and three Zone Meeting in. I would like to say that we our a plus in membership so far for the year in our District but we still need to work harder on Retention. We're losing member almost as fast as we are getting them so if a member misses a meeting give them a call to see how they are and if everything is alright with them. Remember JUST ASK ONE person to become a member! Yours in Lionism DG Tom Zickefoose Hello Fellow Lions, From Your First Vice District Governor - FVDG Barb Sorkin How quickly the month goes by. It s time for another newsletter article. November first and second I was in Grove City to attend the Council of Governors meeting. Later that month I visited the Newton Falls Club. What a great small club. Attended Zone 1 and 2's Zone Meetings, in addition to Hosting the District Cabinet Meeting at Rootstown. It has been a pleasure to meet so many dedicated Lions. Yours in Lionism FVDG Barbara Sorkin From Your Second Vice District Governor - SVDG Bob Allgood Hello my fellow lions from the best district in Ohio, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Contribute to the Philippines Relief Efforts The people of the Philippines are still recovering from the devastating typhoon that struck in November. Lions Clubs International Foundation has mobilized over US$500,000 for relief efforts. More than 12,000 Philippine Lions in 380 clubs are working to rebuild their decimated communities. And clubs around the world have offered their support. But there is still much work to be done, and Lions will be there until the job is finished. "We may not be the first responders in areas hit by disasters, but when the TV cameras are gone, that's when Lions come in and we do the work years afterwards," said International President Barry Palmer, who visited Manila just 48 hours after the typhoon struck. Help the massive recovery efforts in the Philippines by donating today! For the latest updates, visit the Lions Blog. MD 13 GLT News At our recent Regional Lions Leadership Institute we had an excellent presentation on Servant Leadership. After the presentation a number of the participants ask where they could learn more about this topic. This article attempts to explain more about Servant Leadership, point you in the direction that you can find even more about this increasingly used term, and give you some examples of using the concept of Servant Leadership in your work with the Lions. The term Servant Leadership was coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 with the following definition: The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test is: do those served become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or at least not be further deprived? In short the successful leader is the one who by serving the members of his or her team to in- sure their success will be considered a successful leader. This may be by providing materials, support, motivation, listening, training, or whatever it takes to insure the success of the team. In other words as a leader you are only as successful as your team members. For a member of the Lions Club with the motto, We Serve is there ever a more fitting leadership style?
