Turn the page for more details. Rationale for Redistricting MD 13 In June 1992 the total number of Lions in MD13 was 20,121. At the end of June 2013 the total was 12,283 Lions. At the present time District C, E, F, and H are below the 1250 limit prescribed by LCI to qualify for full funding for DG Elect training. Based on the average net loss per year it won t be long until there will be other districts approaching the 1250 figure. In the past, it was a common occurrence to have two or more Lions running for elected cabinet positions and Second Vice Governor. In recent years more and more districts have had difficulty finding qualified individuals who are willing to step up for these positions. In fact, there have been an increasing number of districts where the 2nd VDG position has not been filled at the district convention. It can be argued that this has occurred because our pool of potential leaders has been reduced due to the overall declining enrollment in each of our districts. It is logical to believe that redistricting from 10 to 7 districts will strengthen every district in the state. This plan will allow us to make sure that our DGE can be fully funded by LCI. Having larger base numbers in each district will bring forth a better pool for district officers in each of the seven districts. In addition, a better pool of district officers will improve our ability to attract new members and keep current members. It also levels the playing field in terms of total district numbers so that it makes it more realistic to maintain and grow our membership numbers. A side effect of redistricting is that this move will benefit the finances of the multiple district. Our expenses for district officers and state committee members will be reduced by approximately 30%. GLOBAL SERVICE ACTION CAMPAIGN During December and January, we invite you and your club to join Lions around the world to help relieve hunger. Organize projects that mobilize your club members to make a difference in your community by helping those who don't have enough to eat. Visit The Global FoodBanking Network or Feeding America for volunteer opportunities near you. Access the recorded webinars which featured experts from these two partner organizations. If your local food bank does not have volunteer opportunities available, you may wish to consider other service projects such as preparing and delivering food baskets to families in need or planting a community vegetable garden. Celebrate Family and Friends Month in April! There s nothing more important than family and friends. In April, let s show them how much they mean to us, and how much your Lions club means to the community. Family and Friends Month in April is an opportunity to invite your family and friends to learn, serve and celebrate with your club. Organize a service project, plan an open house, host a lunch or even a picnic you decide how to introduce your family and friends to the club you love. Download the Family and Friends Month flyer and get the word out to your members today! Learn more about Family and Friends on the LCI website. Training Zone 2 and 3 will be hosting a Secretaries workshop, Wednesday January Pizza and drinks will be provided. If you care to bring a dessert you may. This is open to Secretaries, future Secretaries or anyone interested. Contact ZC Dee Pamer windowbox7248@sbcglobal.net. Facilitator: Lion Bob Leach of the Magnolia Lions Club. 3

7 The East Liverpool Lions and Santa made a visit to Nentwick Nursing Home in East Liverpool. Santa and his helpers delivered 95 dozen cookies and other gifts to the residents. Note your own SVDG played Santa and his trusty pilot puppy Hope helped Santa get around. The Lions of 13D were very generous when DG Tom asked for donations of school supplies. Many thanks to all those clubs that participated. DG Tom and FVDG Barb (right) presented school supplies to the Windham Elementary School. DG Tom and SVDG Bob (left) presented school supplies to the East Liverpool Elementary School. "CHRISTMAS BRASSTACULAR" On December 11, 2013, over 40 Lions from Zone 9 attended a wonderful concert in Midland, PA. The performance, by River City Brass from Pittsburgh, PA, was held at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center. It consisted of many well-known holiday songs, as well as some new music and arrangements by band members. The beautiful sounds were infused with just enough humor and singalongs to make the entire evening very enjoyable for all who attended. There were even times when the band accompanied a choir of over 175 high school voices. The finale was the playing and singing of Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus", with everyone in the packed theater on their feet. Some of the comments made as we exited the theater were, "great show", "wonderful performance", and "we should do something like this again". Sounds like a good idea. Plans are in the works for Zone 9 Lions to attend another show in the summer of Come along with us and be entertained. Submitted by: Lion Wayne Christen Zone 9 Chairperson MELVIN JONES DIST. 13D LIONS EYE CARE FOUNDATION SEMI-ANNUAL FINANCIAL UPDATE REPORT During the first six (6) months of the current Fiscal Year of our Melvin Jones District 13D Lions Eye Care Foundation (ECF) expenditures have far exceeded income. During this six (6) month period realized income has been $7, while expenditures have been $42,960.59, resulting in expenditures exceeding income by $35, As a comparison, during this same period last year our expenditures exceeded income by $3, In order to meet ECF expenses $20,000 was transferred from the Foundation investment account to our checking account. Income during this first six (6) month period was half of that received in the same previous year period while expenses were 2.5 times greater than that experienced in the same previous year period. During this six (6) month period twenty (20) cases were approved by the ECF Board of Directors for individuals with confirmed financial need who reside in our District and needed vision care assistance that individual District clubs could not provide. During this same six (6) month period last year twelve (12) cases were approved for assistance. This information is being provided so all District clubs/members have current information on the financial status of our ECF. Last year all clubs in the District provided financial support to the ECF the first time since the formation of the Foundation that all District clubs participated in providing financial support in a fiscal year and the total amount donated to the Foundation through direct club donations was the largest ever contributed in any fiscal year since the formation of the Foundation. Hopefully the District 13D Lions Clubs will respond again this year by having 100% club participation in supporting our ECF and meet or exceed the individual club donations provided last year. The Melvin Jones District 13D Lions Eye Care Foundation is our only District service project. Every District Lions Club and members have shown their support for the service provided by your ECF assistance to the blind and visually impaired and should be proud of your support. The Foundation looks forward to your continued support of the mission of the Foundation in providing assistance to the residents of our District. Any questions regarding this Semi-Annual Financial update should be directed to me. Any club that would like a program presentation on our ECF can contact me or any ECF Board member. IPDG John Woodside, Treasurer Melvin Jones District 13D Lions Eye Care Foundation 7
