Box 6125, Concord, CA General Membership Meetings held Third Friday of the month, at Faith Christian Fellowship Church, 860 Bancroft Rd., Walnut Creek, doors open at 7:00 PM, meeting at 8:00 PM unless otherwise noted. Guests are welcome. July 18 Ice Cream Social (Details on page 5) Diablo A s Visit Byron Park Fifteen Model A s left Best Buy at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 07, 2014 for a nice leisurely tour across town to the senior living center at Byron Park on Tice Valley Road. Aside from the challenge of traffic lights breaking up our group, we arrived at the facility without incident. It was delightful to have so many residents and guests come out to visit the cars and show their own photos of formerly owned vehicles. MAFCA 2012 Certificate of Merit J U L Y Special thanks to the following participants: John & June Rosploch, Wayne English, Doug & Reyanne Freeman, Bob Reed & Lynda Oliver, Hal Granquist, Alex & Ruth Janke, Ron Wolfman, Herb & Marilyn Neumann, Larry & Diane Trimpey, Brad Johnson, Denny Desmond, Don McGrath, Bob & Rose Estrella, Mike Ferre, and Daryl Werner. 2 Continued from page 1 June 21 California Automobile Museum, Sacramento We couldn t have asked for a better day for a leisurely drive up the delta to California Automobile Museum and Old Sacramento for a relaxing lunch. Larry & Diane Trimpey escorted the Harbor Freight group to Miller s Café off the freeway in Antioch just like a well synchronized ballet. Taking all back roads, the pace car maintained a nice Model A cursing speed of 45 miles an hour. The group caravan consisted of 7 Model A s and 3 modern cars with Cruz s white Corvette bringing up the rear. The all you can eat Italian buffet consisting of Pizza, Spaghetti, baked Macaroni & Cheese, and Salad bar was the best bargain in town. As an extra bonus Annabelle s even provide $5 discount parking validation which more than covered the hour we were there. Most of the group gathered back at the museum for the return trip via the river route. Attendees: Barry & Ceil Callistor, Jesse & Linda Cruz, Bob & Rose Estrella, Bob & Lynn Grady, Alex & Ruth Jankee, Don McGrath, Herb & Marilyn Neumann, Robert Reed & Lynda Oliver. The quaint town of Walnut Grove was the only scheduled gas, treats and restroom stop along the way. After a quick check-in at the museum, Docent Bob Daloia offered to take the group though the museum for a more informative insight of the car collection on display. The museum displays are constantly changing. Its collection highlights many different facets of the evolutionary process through exhibits that change several times throughout the year. One visitor was overheard saying, You should go out and look at the old cars in the parking lot. At the end of the museum tour, a flat tire was discovered on one of our cars. The Nascar pit crews have nothing on our guys. In no time at all we were headed to the lunch stop. 2 By John & June Rosploch, Larry & Diane Trimpey July 3rd Benicia Torchlight Parade We did it again! The Diablo A's took First Place in our category for the Benicia Torchlight parade. The judges love us year after year. The southern contingent of the club was led over the bridge by Peggy and Wayne English again this year. They are such troopers to be willing to head up the group on the south side every year. Thanks again to the both of them. We met again at the Pizza Pirate for dinner. It has become such an annual event that they say they won't let anyone else sign up for the room except us. Continued on next page.

3 Continued from page 2 help us get Bea on the road for the Torchlight parade and he kept his promise. Without his help all the upholstery and trim would still be in our bedroom. Again -- thanks for all your support and assistance. Pete & Marianne Goodson July 4th Concord Parade After dinner we headed down to our usual spot on Main Street to decorate and socialize. The weather could not have been better -- warm with a cool breeze coming off the water. We had 17 cars participating in this year's parade. We do look pretty impressive driving up the street and the spectators clap and cheer when they see us. They love the horns. We had both our cars included this year. (Yes, Bea, the '30 Fordor is restored and running!) Benicia's home town parade is a lot of fun to watch and participate in -- if you haven't been able to do it before, consider next year. It's a hoot! Pete and Marianne Goodson July 4th Clayton Parade We would like to thank everyone who has helped us over the past few years to get Bea up and running. It's been a long journey and a difficult one with the health problems and operations that Pete has had to face over that time. Although Marianne helped us much as she could (including a good deal of time under the car) there was only so much either of us could do because of these various circumstances. If we accidently left someone out -- please accept our humble apology. It isn't intentional and it doesn't mean that we didn't appreciate it. But it proves what a great club we have. Those extremely generous people include Bob Grady, Herb Neumann, Marty Larsen, John Bailey, Dave Granquist, Bob Estrella, Paul Chiabotti, Wayne English and Bill Pugh. Eric Lewis (part of the Shellbucks "gang") promised he would 3 Jesse Cruz led the Clayton Parade with the Model A and the First Mayor of Clayton (Bob Hoyer, 94 years young) sitting in the rumble seat. Clayton is celebrating its' 50 th Anniversary this year. Please welcome new members: Chuck Smith & Laurie Snowden Harry Stagg & Marilyn Giuffre

7 Sunshine Report Elsie Boarman It was so good to see and visit with friends at the June meeting. Many of you drove you re A s for the longest day. Good to see Lanny Bright. His son drove him to the meeting. All Filarski was able to be there and we wished him a Happy Birthday. Our President announced his tour in August will be at Buchanan Park in Pittsburg and the Mexican restaurant Mecca will be catering. Pete Goodson will be having hip surgery sometime in July. I will keep you posted on , thanks to Bill Truesdell. I met a couple of guests, Harry and Marilyn at the meeting. They live in Vallejo and plan to participate in the July 3rd Benicia Parade. Lorretta Whitehurst and I, were telling them about all the decorations for the Fourth that were put on the cars. I hope they will have a good time and see how friendly our club is. In reading the article in Cal s Garage about carbon monoxide detectors, it reminded me of a constant peeping that was going off in my house. I thought it was the smoke alarm. I had my neighbor check it out. We changed the battery. The peeping still continued. I couldn t figure it out so I disconnected it. I still heard the peeping. In my bedroom I have a carbon monoxide detector. I checked the battery and it had come loose. When I plugged in the battery, the peeping stopped. Its always good to check the batteries of both detectors at least once a year. I do mine on Mothers Day when my son & daughter do my Honey Due List for my mothers day gift. I don t need more Stuff. 11 Cals Garage with Alex and Bob Installing Cotter Pins Source: Stephen Lester - Sarotoga Springs, New York Putting in cotter pins, by getting the castellated nuts aligned with the hole in the bolt, can be difficult for those of us whose eyesight isn t what it used to be and who are working evenings by poor light. A little preparation will make all cotter pin assembly much easier. Before you even get out your wrenches, reach for a fine tooth file with at least one good corner. I use a small triangular file to put a shallow, but very visible cut on the thread end of the bolt, running a parallel to the hole for the cotter pin. This makes it much easier to line up the notches in the nut with the fine cut on the end of the bolt, and have the hole in line for the cotter pin. A touch of paint will easily conceal the mark. Not a major breakthrough, but a helpful hint for fellow restorers. Al Stoll reported the passing of Pete Westler, past NCRG President and active Redding Rambling A s member. Thank you to Santa Clara Valley A s for hosting the meeting. Next meeting at Turlock in January Meeting adjourned at 8:26 AM. Respectfully submitted, Patti Stetson, Secretary ACCC Communications Source: Presitents Message Hello Car Guys & Car Gals, I m happy to say that the Car Show Season is in full swing and so far there are several bills that our Legislative Analyst, Robin Cole and our lobbyist, John Caldwell are watching and as you all know it doesn t take much for the California legislature to go sideways with anti-car hobby legislation. We all need to continue to be alert, cautious, and vigilant. I am happy to say that AB1002, the bill that would have raised license fees by $6.00, is dead and is a 2-year bill so we won t have to worry about that one until 2014 There is also some good news nationally regarding ethanol. Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Congress to suspend sale of E15 gasoline. The ethanol gasoline blend known as E10 has already caused concern and hesitation, especially among owners of vehicles not designed to run on the fuel, and despite the mounting questions over its use, the Environmental Protection Agency last summer approved the use of E15 gasoline, increasing the amount of ethanol in pump gasoline. Two bills recently introduced in Congress, however, seek to suspend that approval. House Bill 875 and Senate Bill 344 address concerns with the destructive byproduct of the higher ethanol additive, formic acid, which can contaminate fuel systems, melt plastic and rubber and corrode some metals. The EPA began allowing gas dispensaries to offer E15-laced gasoline in June of last year, and the Renewable Fuels Association has stated that the E15 blend was extensively tested by the EPA before approving its use and is safe for virtually all vehicles manufactured after However, with the implementation of E15-based fuels, many new car manufacturers have weighed in on the subject, with producers such as Nissan, Chrysler, Toyota, BMW and Volkswagen announcing that they will not cover fuel-related claims on their new car warranties. Other companies like Ford, Mercedes and Volvo will not honor any drivetrain warranties in vehicles that use E15. The AAA (Automotive Association of America) has also issued statements that further testing of the E85 blend is needed and that the labeling on refueling pumps is insufficient to warn consumers of the possible damage that could occur with the E15 blend. Both bills have the backing of Association of California Car Clubs (ACCC), Historic Vehicle Association (HVA), and SEMA, and the wording of each bill differs slightly. HB875 asks that the use of E15 be suspended for an additional 18 months while more testing is done. The Senate bill would suspend the sale of E15 entirely. We are especially concerned for classic car enthusiasts whose cars see less road miles over the course of a year and allow the fuel to sit idle inside their fuel systems for even longer periods of time. The same concerns should also apply to anyone who owns a lawn mower, chain saw, weed trimmer, motorcycle, boat, snowmobile or ATV as all of these machines also sit idly by for extended periods of inactivity. The lack of use and infrequent refilling of the fuel system is where most of the problems have occurred to date. HB875 has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, while SB344 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Be sure to contact your representatives and let them know you support these bills A s usual, the ACCC Officers and Board of Directors are interested in what you, the members, are thinking and any pressing issues that need our attention. Check in this issue for information on the Director from your area and keep us posted with your suggestions, and comments. Happy Cruising!
