Here s your opportunity to ask questions about MICA and get honest answers from your current MICA students! Founders Green, Glace Hall 7 pm 8 pm Home Sweet Home (Mandatory Meeting for On-Campus Students) Welcome to your new home from the Office of Residence Life & Off-Campus Housing! This session will explain your role in the community while living here at MICA from getting to know the policies to getting to know the staff (and their pets!). This session is required for all students living on campus. 8 pm Popcorn & Movie Night Join us popcorn, a movie and some good times with good company. Saturday, January 13 th 2018 Spring Orientation International, New & Transfer Student Schedule 8 am 8:45 am Off-Campus Student Check-in, Continental Breakfast, Student ID Photos & Meal Plan Questions Pick up your orientation folder and meet Orientation staff members. Student Account Services will be onsite to help you manage your student account and answer any of your questions. Orientation Leaders will also be on hand to help you take your student ID photo. Founders Green, Leake Hall Lobby 8:45 am 9 am Presidential Welcome Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs David Bogen will kick off orientation with an official welcome to you, our newest community members!
2 9 am 10 am Orientation Welcome & Overview Welcome to MICA! Your Orientation Leaders will also introduce you to your orientation group, review the orientation program, describe upcoming events, and answer your initial questions. 9 am 10 am Parent & Family Orientation This session is for parents and families of new and transfer students. Administrators will share information about your student s first year at MICA. There will not be any other orientation sessions for families after this. Therefore, families can head out after this session or they can walk around our campus and explore some of the campus galleries. Founders Green, Glace Hall 10 am 10:15 am Break & Saying Goodbye This is a good time to say goodbye to your family or an opportunity to take a little break. 10:15 am 11:15 am Registration & Curricular Overview Come meet MICA s advising staff, get your class schedule, and discuss the registration process. This is your opportunity to ask questions and get a better understanding of MICA s curriculum. 11:15 am 12:30 pm Writing Assessment An important part of being an artist is being able to clearly explain your ideas through writing. This MANDATORY writing assessment is an opportunity for your faculty to get a sense of your ability to analyze and construct a coherent written argument. This is not a test; however, it affects whether or not you will be placed into the Academic Writing Workshop. Please bring a writing utensil. 12:30 pm 1:15 pm Lunch & Major Mingle Meet with other students in your intended major over a delicious lunch provided by MICA! Founders Green, Glace Hall 12:30 pm 1:15 pm Language Assessment for Non-Native Speakers of English (full degree seeking students only) Non-native speakers of English have been placed into domestic sections or English language supported sections of some first year classes. This will be reflected in your schedule. If you have a concern about the current schedule and would like to have your language skills reconsidered, English language faculty will be available for appointments at this time. Founders Green, Leake Hall, Room 205 1:15 pm 2:15 pm Campus Tour Head out with your Orientation Leader on a campus tour where you will have the opportunity to find your classes and other key resources on MICA s campus, including the MICA Fitness Center, Student Health Center, Writing Studio, Decker Library, etc. Departs from Founders Green 2:15 pm 2:45 pm Career Development Meet the staff of the Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development and learn all about the exciting artistic professional development opportunities that are open to you. 2:45 pm 3:15 pm Staying Safe: at MICA, in Baltimore, and in the Studio
3 Campus Safety will inform you about resources at MICA and share tips for staying safer oncampus and in Baltimore. You will also hear an informative presentation from MICA s Office of Health and Safety about how to stay safe in the studio and classroom at MICA. 3:15 pm 3:45 pm Campus Involvement Hear about different ways of getting involved on campus. 3:45 pm 4:15 pm Wellness + Transition to MICA Everything is new...teachers, peers, surroundings, and expectations. It's important to take care of your physical and mental well-being while you transition to life at MICA. In this session, we'll discuss strategies for managing the transition and what you need to know about wellness resources to help keep you physically, mentally, and emotionally well during your time here. 5 pm 7:30 pm Dinner in Meyerhoff Dining Hall (optional) This is the first time you can use your meal plan! If you don t have a meal plan, don t worry! Dinner in Meyerhoff Dining Hall costs $12.80 at the door. Looking for dinner suggestions off campus? For a meal you can walk to, head down to Charles St, where you ll find Chipotle, XS, Thai Landing, Turp s Sports Bar & Resturant, and more! Check out MICA s Baltimore Restaurant Guide (in your folder) for more options! Some go-to favorites are: R House--food court style restaurant with plenty of options. Joe Squared PIzza--Square pizza, what s not to love? Red Emmas --A vegetarian restaurant with a really cool vibe. Vaccaro s--do you want dessert for dinner? More information can be found at MICA CAS: Community Site Leader MICA Community Art and Service is hiring Community Site Leaders for Spring 2017!!! Community Site Leaders, (CSL), are paid semester long student leadership opportunities, working with community partnerships in fostering creative exchanges in Baltimore. CSLs plan, organize, and facilitate community art opportunities throughout Baltimore City with community partnership sites such as schools, neighborhood art centers, and rehabilitation/transitional housing facilities. Students participate at various levels of hourly commitment, are provided space to reflect on their experiences, and have opportunities for professional development and personal support as students and community leaders. The CSL position also receives a stipend award, supply budget, and mentoring throughout the semester. Apply today for CSL Spring 2018!!! Application deadline is Sunday January 28, 2018: Student Voice Association (SVA) The Student Voice Association (SVA) is MICA's student advocacy group. MICATalks Friday, February 10, 6 8:30 pm; Leake Lecture, Leake Hall (Founders Green) Come join us for a night of TED Talk inspired lectures as a panel of successful alumni from a wide range of professional worlds share their journey with the MICA community. Speakers will be presenting on their current work and how they navigated life after graduation to get to where they are today. FASQA s 3rd Annual Gender Performance Show Friday, February 23, 8-10pm; Gateway Building, BBOX MICA's Faculty & Staff Queer Alliance invites you to this spectacular event, Boots & Heels! It will brighten your darkest winter night with a dazzling show of local queen and king performers. The MC for the night will be Mike Molla and our featured performers will be Ms. Sue Nami and Chris Jay! This promises to be a night of fun filled entertainment! Only 150 seats available so don't miss out! Ticket Information: MICA students $5, General admission $10, and VIP $20 (premium tickets are front row seat/right next to the stage and also include refreshments before the show and during intermission).
