8 Area Agency on Aging Selects Myron Amstutz as 2018 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Ashland County 5 I ve often heard that men and women live the first half of their life trying to achieve success, fortune, fame, all those things Then they spend the second half of their life trying to achieve a life of lasting significance, said Mayor Miller during the ceremony. The good news about Myron is he learned early on that you should pursue those matters of lasting significance right from the very beginning. Each year the Area Agency on Aging honors senior citizens who are making a difference in their communities and present a positive image of aging. There is one award recipient for each county in the Agency s service area (Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot.) Ontario OH The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging Inc. is proud to announce Myron Amstutz has been selected as the 2018 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Ashland County. He and eight other recipients were honored on Thursday, August 23 at a ceremony hosted at Hawkins Corner. Amstutz was nominated by Becky Echelberger of Senior Citizens of Ashland County. In her nomination, she shared that Amstutz has resided in Ashland since 1962.He taught math at Plymouth High School for 31 years, and after retirement, he became a funeral director and worked at Heyl Funeral Home in Ashland for 13 years. He is a board member of the Ashland County Historical Society, a member of the Ashland County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, and a member and former board member of the Senior Citizens of Ashland. 12 HOW TO GET NEW MEMBERS By: 1st VDG Lion Kenny Schuck I was questioned recently about how a club can get new members. The answer is simple--the execution is a little more complicated. To get new members the key is to ASK! People will not normally walk into your club meeting and ask to join, we need to go out and invite them in. First, however are you and your club prepared for new members? New members can not be given their membership pins one day and forgotten about the next. You and your club must be ready to take on the responsibility of properly orientating your new member into the ways of Lions Clubs International and your club. Your club members must show your new ones that they are welcome and socialize with them. With new members comes new ideas, and our clubs must be receptive to new ideas and new input. What I am talking about are the keys to member retention. Getting new members is pointless if we can not keep them in our club. Second, is your club running properly to retain new members? All of our clubs accomplish a great deal and sometimes we become complacent in how our clubs and meetings are run. We all know people are very busy today. They are so busy that they don t have time to sit in poorly run meetings that drag on and on and accomplish nothing. Socialization is an important aspect of our clubs and there should be time for it. During your business meeting is not one of those times. Meetings were no one has control and everyone is talking will not inspire new members to return. Please, make sure your meetings are run effectively. Have an agenda for your meetings, have copies for everyone and follow it. Be sure your meetings are held in an environment conducive of an effective meeting. Many clubs meet in a restaurant, which is fine as long as it is not a distraction or too noisy for running a meeting. Be sure the meeting room is arranged so that everyone can hear. Though not necessarily cheap, a small microphone system may make a big difference in a meetings atmosphere. Be wary of your club becoming stagnant. Statements such as That is how we have always done it or We have the same officers every year are an indicator of possible stagnation in your club. Even if an activity or method has worked for decades, it does not guarantee it is still the best way to do something. No matter how good people do as an officer, serving year after year as President, for instance, tends to limit new ideas and it hinders the development of others to become leaders in your club. New members bring new challenges for your club. Young members have children. Is your club prepared to deal with them? New members have new ideas as to how they want to serve. After nearly a century of being the Knights of the Blind, we have recently seen the addition of children s cancer and diabetes to LCI s service areas. These are areas of great need and are examples of how ideas on service can change. Are the members of your club willing to change? Once your club has discussed these issues, go out and ask people to join your club. One of the most effective ways to recruit members is using the Ohio Plan for member recruitment. The plan works. However, for it to work you must follow it completely. There are no short cuts, there is no Ohio Plan Lite that is effective. Again the key is to ASK! Ask many people, ask and follow up with them. Don t get discouraged by a couple of rejections. Most people you ask will not join but some will and that is what s important. If you or your club needs help with any aspect of bettering your club or recruiting new members, please contact your Zone Chairperson or another member of the District Cabinet. We are here to help you! 7

14 Poinsettia Sale Follow Up 8 District OH-2 and the Ashland Evening Lions Club will be selling poinsettias again this year. Our prices are the same as last year: $11 for the 6-1/2 poinsettias and $20 for the 8-1/2 poinsettias.
