1 p + DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR RECEPTION PLACE STARTING SEPTEMBER 2019 If you have a child with a date of birth between 1 st September 2014 and 31 st August 2015, the deadline to apply for a school place for them is midnight on Tuesday January 15 th Further information can be found online at aspx Applications can be made online at Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome back to the new term and a Happy New Year to all our children and their families! I hope everyone enjoyed a restful holiday. Although school was closed, the website was still busy with posts of Christmas performances and the pantomime going live. If you haven t seen these performances they are well worth a look! Staffing Matters Congratulations to Mrs Phelps who gave birth to her baby girl Hallie on December 31 st. Both mum and baby are doing well. Mrs Tennant is expecting a baby and her maternity leave will commence towards the end of this term. We are currently in the process of recruiting a teacher to cover her maternity period. Attendance At the end of last term, we saw a large increase in the number of pupils absent and this is a pattern we have noticed around holidays over the last year. Unfortunately, more than 10% of the school missed the last day of term. Many of the parents of these children did not provide a reason for absence. Please can I remind you that it is vital that you report the reason for your child s absence promptly. It creates a lot of work for the school office when this is not done in a timely way. Equally, if you do take your child out of school for any reason it is important that you put this in writing in advance so that we know where your child is. Again, failure to do this makes work and wastes resources. In the last term we have had to send staff out to do home visits and in some cases have had to involve the police to establish a 1

2 child s wellbeing. The safeguarding duty we have requires that we follow these procedures if we are unsure where a child is or why they are not at school. For the same reasons it is really important that you keep us informed of up to date contact details and addresses for you and your child as well as any emergency contacts. There are forms available in reception to complete if your details change, you would be amazed at how many times a day we try and contact parents to find the mobile number we have is not current. In an emergency situation this could be a real problem. As a result of the high levels of absence before and after holidays the Governing Body made a decision to direct me, as Headteacher, not to authorise absence on these days for illness without medical evidence. This means that if a child is absent on the last or first day of term their absence will be unauthorised unless some medical evidence is provided. Evidence could be an appointment card, prescription or similar. It is not necessary to ask the doctor for a note or to write anything. The Governing Body recognise that there will be a small number of children who are genuinely ill on these days but no medical evidence can be provided. Whilst it is unfortunate that their absence will be unauthorised, providing they do not have high levels of other absences that are unauthorised, there should not be any negative impact of this policy. We will apply this policy from the next holiday. If I could ask you once again to put in writing in advance any instance where you take your child out of school other than when they are ill and to report illness on the first morning of absence. Many thanks for your co-operation. Neil Tarchetti Headteacher Year 4 Hooke Court This week you should have received a parental information and medical form in preparation for Hooke Court. It is important that these are completed fully and returned by 18th January at the latest so that we have your most up to date information with us on the trip. If your child takes medication regularly outside of school, there is a place on this form to note this so we can administer it in your absence. Lots of people are putting together costumes ready for the Egyptian day on the Hooke Court trip. If your child's costume is ready by the 22nd, the children are allowed to wear it into school on that day as we are being visited by Treehouse Theatre to create an Egyptian play in a day. Year 2 It s been a wonderful first week back with Science week, lots of exciting experiments and science learning. We launched our new 'All Aboard the Titanic' topic by making junk model boats and testing which ones floated. Thank you to everyone who sent in some junk modelling materials. Also, thank you to everyone who has already paid for and offered to help on our school trip to the Sea City Museum. More details will be sent out shortly and anyone needed to help will be informed over the next week. 2

3 Great news - Waitrose Winton are supporting our Project Polytunnel this month with their Community Matters tokens! We want to encourage our children to make healthy choices and at the moment we can only grow a limited range of fruit and vegetables in raised beds but we are aiming to install a polytunnel, complete with raised beds and storage systems. This will allow us to produce more popular fruit and vegetables earlier in the year, which in turn means our children get to try new foods, experience growing, learn about plants, ecosystems and pollination and appreciate what it takes for food to reach our plates. Children will also be able to access elements of the curriculum through experiential learning, enjoy the benefits of being outdoors whatever the weather and to learn about new foods that they have never tried before. All you need to do to support the project is put your Waitrose tokens in the 'Winton Primary Polytunnel Project' box in the Winton store. The more tokens we get, the larger our share of the 1000 award. Thanks for your support! Reception The home learning project for this half term was sent out with the parent information letter before Christmas, but here is a little reminder if the information got lost in the chaos that is Christmas! Parent Rocket Building Workshops Cherry - Monday 4 th February Plum - Tuesday 5 th February Apple - Wednesday th February Pear - Thursday 7 th February Q Pootle has crash landed in our playground and needs a rocket so that he can get to the birthday party he was heading to on time. (He hasn't actually crashed yet, but keep your eyes peeled over the next few weeks for a rocket in the garden!) We would love you to design and make a rocket with your child during the rocket workshop. Have a think, with your child, about the shape of the rocket you want to make and what materials you might need. The recycling bin will be the place to look! Please come to the workshop with all your junk modelling resources, we will provide scissors, tape, glue, some paper and pens. Rocket Readers will be continuing this term. Every time your child reads at home at least three times in one week, they will move along a star on our Rocket Readers classroom display. When they reach the rocket, they will receive a small prize for their efforts. We had many children winning a gold readers medal before Christmas, and we hope that more children will achieve this soon with some super reading at home. If your child has already won the medal, they can work towards a new super Rocket Reader prize. Keep reading Reception! Year 5 The children had a wonderful visit to Winchester Science Centre. They had lots of opportunities to find out about scientific principles through a wide range of practical activities. During the visit to the Planetarium, the children went on a journey through space, discovering the vastness of the universe and lots of facts about the planets in our solar system. It was a wonderful day with excellent behaviour. Thank you to all the parents who came to help. 3
