3 All Things Orthopedics: Controversies & Clinical Advances Saturday, March 2, am 3:30pm Crest Hollow Country Club 8325 Jericho Turnpike Woodbury, NY Statement of Need: As the spectrum of orthopedic clinical care continues to grow and evolve through recent advances in technology and modern medicine, the model in which clinical care is delivered often changes as a result of these advances. Orthopedic surgeons, as well as the team of clinicians involved throughout the patient continuum of care, are now presented with a multitude of new surgical and non-surgical options that are taken into consideration when providing treatment for the orthopedic and musculoskeletal patient populations. Due to a lack of knowledge surrounding these new technologies as well as minimal evidence-based outcomes research, care givers are now finding themselves having to make difficult decisions when treating a patient and developing his/her plan of care, often times evoking peer-to-peer controversy. While the patient population s need for orthopedic services increases, clinicians and allied health care professionals need to be educated on the ever-changing clinical advances in joint replacement, sports medicine, spine medicine and trauma medicine; the controversies imposed by a new technological landscape and their potential impact on the orthopedic/musculoskeletal care delivery model while ultimately sustaining an ongoing effort to maximize patient outcomes. This course will address recent changes in orthopedic care management and decision making, innovative surgical techniques and clinical advances, in tandem with rehabilitative modalities presented through didactic lectures and point/counterpoint debates, all supported by evidence-based research and outcome measures in alignment with patient-centric goals. Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this live conference, participants should be able to: Describe the difference in clinical outcomes for the osteoarthritis patient population who elect to have joint replacement surgery vs. non-operative treatment methods. Identify the appropriate patient candidates for robotic surgery, specific instrumentation or conventional arthroplasty based on patient presentation and comorbidities. Determine if a patient presenting with knee pain is an appropriate candidate for meniscus repair vs. meniscus resection and develop subsequent rehabilitation protocols. Summarize the difference in clinical outcomes for patients who present with pain in the spine who elect to have a surgical procedure vs. non-operative treatment methods. Recognize when it is appropriate to refer a patient who experienced a traumatic injury to the humeral shaft or ribs for surgical intervention and identify which technique will produce the most positive outcome. Target Audience: Orthopedists; Sports Medicine Specialists; Joint Replacement Specialists; Trauma Specialists; Physiatrists; Pediatricians; Primary Care Physicians; Rheumatologists; Nurses; Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists; Occupational Therapists; Athletic Trainers and allied health care professionals CME Accreditation: Northwell Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
