DSB WEEKLY NO. 768 February 26, 2007 The College of Dentistry Welcomes Tim Smith The College of Dentistry welcomes Dr. Tim Smith who is an adjunct faculty in the Department of Family Dentistry. After graduating from the College of Dentistry in 1993, Tim returned to his hometown of Bettendorf to enter private practice. In his spare time, Dr. Smith likes to travel. He is an avid golfer and because he is a private plane pilot, Dr. Smith enjoys flying to different courses across the country. Tim and his wife, Cami, have two children: their daughter, Kylie, is 14 years old and their son, Austin, is 12 years old. Kimberly Bell (D3) talks with Dr. Mike Finkelstein about her poster. There will be a reduction in the patient fee for participating. 54 th Annual Meeting of the Iowa Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Held on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 The 2007 54 th Annual Research Day of the Iowa Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) was held Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Kevin Hardwick, director of extramural research training programs at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), gave the keynote address. Dr. Hardwick talked about advances in dental research as well as research programs supported by NIDCR. The formal program included 70 presentations by students, faculty and staff, from within and outside the College of Dentistry, on a wide range of topics. There were 25 oral and 45 poster presentations, which were made possible in part by the flawless performance of the collegiate Ed Media department. The organizers are particularly grateful to Jim Herd and Patricia Conrad for their exceptional preparations of posters, programs, announcements and certificates; to Sean Kelley (continued on page 2, column 1) 1 Dr. Jon Ryder: Life and Hope in Cambodia, March 2, 2007, noon, in Oral B Classroom Dr. Jon Ryder, adjunct faculty, Department of Operative Dentistry, will present Life and Hope in Cambodia, a program and slide show about his experiences volunteering in Cambodia. D1-D3 students were especially active, as presenters and as attendees. For the first time, the Iowa Dental Association (IDA) was represented at this event by Dr. Heather Heddens, IDA vice president. Rebecca Van Horn, manager of professional and academic relations at Procter and Gamble (P&G) Professional Oral Health, represented P&G and participated in the judging of the P&G pre-doctoral poster competition. We were also honored by the participation of Dr. John Keller, dean of the Graduate College, who also served as a judge in one of the competitions. The formal program, the awards and the reception and awards banquet were sponsored by the College of Dentistry administration, the academic departments, Procter and Gamble, and the Iowa Section of the AADR. Dr. Jon Ryder is also a photographer.
