4 President s Report President s Report Last Thursday we had an informative, personal and entertaining presentation from Christine Rees. She particularly stressed that all heart attacks are different and that symptoms range from discomfort or pain in the centre of the chest; discomfort in other parts of the body; and the feeling of shortness of breath, nausea, cold sweat and dizziness all symptoms of shock. It was great to see that Max had invited Robert Sharp and Adrian Kitely as his guests. This was a great example why not invite friends to join you at a meeting without starting the conversation about potential membership until later? This week Carol Pratt is representing Eastern Palliative Care. Eastern Palliative Care provides specialist palliative care services free of charge in your home. It is the largest single provider of community based palliative care services in Victoria providing services in the Local Government areas of Boroondara, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse, Knox and Yarra Ranges. Next week we have the official visit of District Governor Malcolm Chiverton. He will be accompanied by his wife Karen. All partners are invited to attend and it would be great to see our honorary members as well. Please let William know about guests. I attended my first Presidents meeting last Friday night and I want to give you a brief report because I was impressed by the diversity of Rotary programs and want to share some of this with you. We have a great Club but it doesn t do any harm to be aware of opportunities 4 to become even better.

5 The first agenda item said Bar Open and this was a highlight of the night! Tegan McWilliam, District Rotaract Representative, gave a great presentation. She stressed that Rotaractors in general do not want to be invited to join Rotary they see themselves as part of the organization already. Nor do they want to be seen as a source of labour. They are happy to be offered participation in joint projects. There was a presentation by Gael Traa on spreadsheets which could be used to track hours worked in the name of Rotary. This is a requirement for President s citation and could be quite a chore despite the fact that Ian Riseley simply said And that is why, in the new Rotary year, I will ask every Rotary club to provide us in Evanston with just two numbers: the amount of money, both in cash and in kind, invested in humanitarian service, and the number of hours of work performed in Rotary s name. Youth Protection changes were introduced by PDG Merv Ericson. He noted that from 1 July the Vic. Govt introduced Victorian Reportable Conduct Scheme. If we experience a 'reportable event' (unlikely) we have 3 working days to report it and 30 day to conduct an investigation unless it is a police matter. From 1 August there are changes to Working With Children. There has been an expanded definition of 'direct contact' which now includes conversation, mail, and texting and virtually rules out 'indirect contact'. Stresses need for all members to have current Working With Children cards. PDG David Alexander mentioned that Rotary Charitable Services was launched 30 May 2017 and that this provides a mechanism for tax deductibility in unincorporated joint ventures. PDG Jenny Coburn discussed membership matters announcing that a Corporate Membership Application form has been drafted as a result of a great deal of interest in this class of membership. She also announced that on Saturday 7 October at the Box Hill Baseball Club there will be a launch of this year s District Conference. There is a Foundation Seminar in Box Hill this Friday. An Indigenous Committee update, including information about the Trachoma 2020 project was delivered by Lesley Zuccaro, David Hone and P Keith Chamberlain. PP Glenn Tippett promoted the Australian Rotary Health Lift the Lid campagn with a focus on 7 8 October and PP David Winter discussed the Disabilities Bus for Alkira. There was a Sustainable Communities Committee update from PP Pat Armstrong and Clare Caulfield in which Ian Risely s promotion each Rotarion of planting a tree was elaborated upon. PDG David Alexander provided an informative International Committee update and both DGE Russell Gurney and DGN Shia Smart made a contribution.
