1 35th Annual Dental Hygiene Symposium July 14-16, 2017 Presented by The College of Allied Health Sciences Department of Dental Hygiene at Augusta University and Division of Professional and Community Education at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront, Savannah, Georgia
2 Purpose The symposium will provide evidence-based, innovative and practical presentations and interactive workshops. The information will help dental professionals manage patient populations with diverse health needs. Each participant will receive a comprehensive seminar manual for future reference. Credit The College of Allied Health Sciences at Augusta University designates this activity for a maximum of 12.0 continuing education credits. Thompson, RDH, MHE, Professor at Augusta University, Colleges of Allied Health Sciences and Dental Medicine. She is Program Director and Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene. Her teaching areas include dental anatomy, radiology, research design, and clinical dental hygiene. Augusta University Faculty Balasudha Balahandayutham, BDS, MS, AEGD, graduated from dental school at M.G.R. Medical University Chennai, India. She received her MS in Biomaterials-Dentistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama and completed a two year residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at University of Rochester, Eastman Institute for Oral Health, Rochester, New York. Dr. Baladhandayutham joined The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University, in the Department of Restorative Sciences as faculty. Her research interests are remineralization techniques for enamel, improving the mechanical properties of resin composites, microleakage and bond strength of adhesives, all-ceramic restorations and mercury release from amalgam restorations.
3 Guest Speakers Monica Bronowicki, RDH, MBA, Academic Relations Consultant with GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, is a graduate from University of Iowa with a BS in Dental Hygiene and a MBA from Benedictine University. Her role is training and educating faculty and students in the dental and hygiene schools throughout the Midwest on conditions that support GSK brands. She also educates faculty and students on smoking cessation and motivational interviewing. Becky Horst, RDH, Clinical Education Manager of the Southeast with Hu-Friedy Mfg. Co., LLC. Her role consists of training and educating faculty and students. Becky supports Hu-Friedy school business by delivering cutting edge research and education to educators and clinicians who support the use of Hu-Friedy instrumentation within dental schools and dental hygiene programs. Olga A.C. Ibsen, RDH, MS, FAADH, an Adjunct Professor at New York University College of Dentistry, in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Medicine and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She has made significant contributions to the Dental Hygiene Profession as an educator, clinician, author and editor. She has been a part of the clinical practice of Dental Hygiene for over thirty five years. She has coauthored the text Oral Pathology for the Dental Hygienist published by Elsevier, now in its 7th Edition. She is a contributing author to all eight editions of Mosby s Comprehensive Review of Dental Hygiene and to Mosby s Review Questions for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. Ms. Ibsen presents CE courses on Oral Pathology at dental and dental hygiene meetings, nationally and internationally. Tracey Jacobs, BSDH, RDH, a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry with a Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene. She is a member of the American Dental Education Association, American Dental Hygienists Association and American Academy for Oral Systemic Health. Having served several leadership positions including President of the Florida Dental Hygiene Association, she is most noted for her dedicated service as FDHA Event Planner and awarded the 2014 FDHA Distinguished Service Award. Carol Jahn, RDH, MS, Director of Professional Relations & Education for Water Pik, Inc. She has presented more than 350 courses, published more than 85 papers, and contributed to 7 textbooks, including Clinical Periodontology (9th, 10th, 11th editions). She has been a presenter at 40 state/national dental hygiene association meetings, including ADHA and RDH UOR. She has presented at 20 state/ regional dental meetings including Chicago Midwinter and Yankee Dental. She was a 2013 recipient of the ADHA Award of Excellence.
4 Samuel B. Low, DDS, MS, MEd, Professor Emeritus, University of Florida, College of Dentistry; Associate faculty member of the Pankey Institute with 30 years of private practice experience in periodontics, lasers and implant placement. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and past President of the American Academy of Periodontology. He is a current Board of Director of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Dr. Low provides dentists and dental hygienists with the tools for successfully managing the periodontal patient in general and periodontal practices and is affiliated with the Florida Probe Corporation. Lisandra Maisonet, RDH, received her AAS degree in Dental Hygiene from Montgomery County Community College, her BS degree from Pennsylvania College of Technology, and is enrolled in a Master s Program in Adult Education at Penn State University. Further, she is certified as an expanded functions dental assistant and adjunct faculty member at Montgomery County Community College. As a pediatric dental hygienist for Newtown Dentistry for Kids, she specializes in the treatment of children with extreme apprehension. She speaks to dental and healthcare professionals on age, one dentistry and how to educate on cavity prevention. She also serves as President-Elect for the PDHA as well as president of her local component. AU Dental Hygiene Faculty Kandyce A see, RDH, MS, Assistant Professor in the College of Allied Health Sciences, Department of Dental Hygiene. She teaches clinical dental hygiene, theory and practice, and practice management and ethics. Ms. A see also teaches numerous courses in the on-line degree-completion program. Cynthia T. Hughes, RDH, MEd, Associate Professor in the College of Allied Health Sciences, Department of Dental Hygiene. Ms. Hughes teaches dental hygiene theory & practice, dental hygiene practicum, and clinical dental hygiene in the entry level program. 7 LOCATION AND LODGING The Marriott Riverfront Hotel, Savannah, Georgia, the symposium host hotel, is located on historic River Street where warehouses have been converted to specialty shops and restaurants. Savannah offers abundant opportunities for sightseeing via horse-drawn carriage rides, riverboat cruises and historical tours. Savannah s Tybee Beach is only 30 minutes away. The registration fee, less a $50 administrative charge, is refundable if notice of cancellation is received by Friday June 30, Augusta University is not responsible for any circumstance making it impossible to attend their continuing education courses due to acts of God, war, government regulations, disaster, strikes, civil disorder or curtailment of transportation facilities. If Augusta University cancels a continuing education activity you will be refunded your registration fee. SAVANNAH Laid out by General James Oglethorpe in 1733 as the first settlement in the colony of Georgia, the city of Savannah retains much of its original 18th century flavor. A series of 20 one-acre parks checkers the downtown area, creating the impression of one continuous park. Numerous colonial and antebellum mansions are nestled among the azaleas and the Spanish moss-draped oaks of the squares. Downtown Savannah comprises the largest Historic Landmark District in America.
