Instant Activity/Warm Up: Perimeter Walk Walk the perimeter line. Students will practice clapping, walking, marching, jumping, hopping, and galloping to a drum or music. Use teacher cues for directions such as clockwise/counter clock wise around circle, forward, backward, and sideways. Have the students skip to the beat to get a jump rope and find a self space for the next activity. How do muscles and bones work together? Introduce Scatter Square CATCH # Scatter Square A D. Use Verbal Cues. What is the difference between jumping a rope forward and jumping a rope backward? Jump Rope Tag (5 jump ropes will be placed in safe space in the gym along a boundary line) Students will play tag in the general space changing locomotor skills and taggers often. If tagged, the students will go to the jump rope area and do 5 jumps forward and 5 jumps backwards. Then, they will reenter the tag game. (Start assessing 2nd Grade Jump Rope PT.) How would perseverance help you to learn to jump rope? Skeletal System Clothespin Tag Print the names of the bones on clothespins. You will need at least 5 clothespins of each bone. Give a clothespin to each student and have them clip it to their clothes as close to the correct location as possible. The object of the game is for students to gather 5 clothespins. The students will chase each other trying to take the clothespins from one another. Once a student gets 5 then the game is stopped and the clothespins get redistributed. Begin the game again. After the game, review the concepts by having the students place the clothespins on a partner in the correct locations. (Display slide #14 of the 2 nd Grade Skeletal System for an anchor of support). What are some examples of major bones of the body? Smarty Pants Tag (Bones): (4 copies of the 2 nd Grade Skeletal System. Students will play tag in the general space changing locomotor skills often. 4 students start on the boundary line as the Smarty Pants students. They will each have a copy of the study guide. If tagged, the students will go to a Smarty Pants. They must point to the bone that the Smarty Pants names. They will switch places. The Smarty Pants re enters the game and the student who just answered the question becomes the new Smarty Pants. Rhythm Single Jump Rope Direct teach proper technique for the jump roping. (Use Jump Rope Skill Cues for Turning a Short Rope.) Next have students practice jumping while pretending to turn a rope. Then, add the rope. Introduce backward jumping. Describe the change in wrist position (back further). Practice without a rope. When ready, practice with a rope.
