9 Serwell Lecture Monday, 8:00-9:00 AM In the early 1980s, Richard Serwell was instrumental in gathering a founding core of charter members called the Association of Academic Surgical Administrators (AASA) and was unanimously elected as the organization s first president in Richard may be considered the first to articulate the vision of the AASA based on integrity, friendship, and community. All too soon, Richard s life ended in March Richard remembered the AASA in his will by giving the organization a bequest. This bequest was supplemented with AASA funds to create an endowed fund. The endowment income is used for the Richard Serwell Lecture and supporting some of the Education Program expenses. Because of Richard s dedication and vision, the AASA Executive Committee established the Richard Serwell Lectureship in June 1990, and the first lecture was delivered in 1991 at the Education Conference in Orlando, Florida. This lectureship is awarded annually to a speaker of considerable stature who would address the issues of importance, substance, and broad interest to the membership. At the Mercy of Metrics: Strategies for Owning Healthcare Measures As academic surgery practices are the metrics we utilize for management more focused on metrics than on our missions? Have we been given metrics focused on measurable outcomes rather than us creating metrics that measure our success? Are our current measures managing our performance towards improvement or are they counterproductive? Based on Jerry Muller s latest book, Tyranny of Metrics, Dr. Matthew Edwards will speak to application to academic surgery practice. He will share thoughts on unintended consequences of metrics as well as our responsibility as administrators to utilize judgment and lead within management outcomes. Dr. Edwards will share successes and lessons learned to motivate surgeons towards outcomes as well as recommendations to those in leadership positions responsible for impacting outcomes. Matthew S. Edwards, MD Chairman of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Wake Forest School of Medicine Matthew S. Edwards is the Chairman of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Wake Forest School of Medicine where he holds the academic rank of Professor with joint appointments in Public Health Sciences and Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Edwards took his undergraduate and medical training at the University of Virginia followed by general and vascular surgery training at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in association with the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Edwards particular clinical interests include renovascular disease, aortic disease, and standardization of care systems. Dr. Edwards has previously held research funding from the National Institutes of Health to investigate outcome improvement in the area of atherosclerotic renovascular disease. He has served as an invited expert for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Coverage Advisory Committee for topics relating to renovascular disease and has authored over 60 peer reviewed publications and numerous textbook chapters related this area as well.
