1 Chiefly Speaking Lo La Qam Geela Quality Lodge 2008 Order of the Arrow Crater Lake Council Boy Scouts of America Serving Northern California, Central, and Southern Oregon Volume XI, Issue 1 January - March 2010 Greetings Lo La'Qam Geela! My name is Jacob Mastel and I am the new Lodge Chief of Lo La Qam Geela for Being so active in the lodge lately I ve had multiple opportunities to see how well the lodge works as well as some ways in which I think it can improve. Over the summer I was one of the nine people sent to NOAC One thing I heard a few times during the shows and in the class sessions is that the BSA is on a campaign to reintroduce itself to the public. Hearing this I realized that many people in our Council don t know who we are or what we do. While Council itself is well aware of us many Scoutmasters don t know about us or what we do. I would like to see our Arrowmen more active in our districts. That doesn t necessarily mean more gigantic service projects like c 3 or Webelos Transitional Camps, but small measures that can be taken to help districts. Recently DaGelMa taught how to run a campfire during Roaring Rogue s Scoutmaster training. Other things you can do could be as simple as opening flags at your districts roundtable or help a struggling Pack or Troop get their feet on the ground. Not every service opportunity has to be a major undertaking, sometimes simply a helping hand to another s project is of great value. 5 Page 5 Volume XI, Issue 1 Vice Chief of Activities As the returning VC of Activities I have high hopes to make this year even better than the last. I m working on two new service projects for our lodge and am looking for anyone that wants to help on my various committees. If you d like to help plan any of our events please get in contact with me Andrew Blocher Vice Chief of Programs My name is Zachary Homen and I am your new vice chief of programs. Since we have not had a "Where to Go Camping" book in a long time, I would like to work towards getting that finished. I would also like to see some more active arrowmen in our lodge. The OA is known a lot for its service towards the community so I would like to plan out and work towards some service projects. I am glad to be your new vice chief of programs and am happy to help our lodge. Zachary Homen Vice Chief of Ceremonies I am very excited to begin as the Lodge Vice Chief of Ceremonies for Lo La Qam Geela. There are a few expectations and goals that I have for the lodge ceremonies team, as well as the chapter teams. I would like to see each chapter performing Arrow of Light ceremonies and Bridging/Crossover ceremonies for their local packs and troops this year. The easiest ceremony can be as simple as two Arrowmen in regalia reading from a script. However, my main goal this year is to work with my ceremonies team members and help them to memorize lines for their performances so scripts will not be necessary. For instance, you wouldn t go to watch a play if you knew the actors were going to stand still and read off a paper. Nor would Cub Scout Packs want ceremonialists that don t know how to present their ceremony. This is why we will be working on not only the memorization, but also the dramatization of putting on a good performance. For many Cubs, this ceremony decides whether or not they will continue in Scouting. Also, I will be contacting all of the new ceremonialists that signed up with me to help them find the part of the Ordeal ceremony that fits them best. Hopefully, we as a lodge will be able to assemble not one, but two complete ceremonies teams (4 or more Arrowmen each) that can perform the Ordeal ceremony professionally by the end of my term. This would help out because it is rare for a ceremonialist to be available to perform at every Ordeal throughout the year. If there is anyone that is interested in being part of the ceremonies teams this year, make sure to let me know. There are the four main speaking parts, as well as many nonspeaking helper positions that can still be filled. Once my teams have begun to fill up, I plan to organize a couple practices between now and Callouts because the Callout ceremony is another of the make it or break it presentations that I would like to see my teams master. If we can have a good first impression on the newly elected OA candidates, there is a greater chance of getting them to return for other events. One last little blippet: I certainly encourage all Arrowmen that are even vaguely interested in acting to take a go at it. I never thought I could act at all but, through the OA ceremonies, I have become proficient with memorizing lines, becoming my character, and, most of all, I have learned how to ad lib when something goes wrong. It has also built up my self esteem, as well as forming character in myself. Plus, it is always fun! Ask anyone that has done an OA ceremony; they will tell you that it is an endless source of entertainment! If you would like to sign up to be part of the team, feel free to send me an at troop18spl@yahoo.com, or call me after 4pm at Hope to hear from you soon! Joe Grant Secretary What I would like to see done as a lodge officer is that all of the members become more active and participate in as many activities as possible, also that all that events are planned before time starts running out. The events are what really get our members together and for them to run smoothly and fun we need to put extra effort in doing whatever it takes to do so. Even if it means planning them way ahead and start working on the setup of them as soon as possible. Anthony Judycki Treasurer I m Mike Goswick, your new lodge treasure. The job of treasure has been done well in the past, and only a few things need to be improved. The main improvement is to create a budget. I know many people would like to see one, so I will try to get a budget made as soon as possible. Also, I want the trading post to have items that people want to buy. So, I would like your feedback on what the trading post should have as far as things like kinds soda, candy, ect. Mike Goswick
6 Page 6 Volume XI, Issue 1 Lodge Leadership Development LLD 2009 was an amazing event and a great time was had by all. If you couldn t make it you missed out. It was at the Running Y Resort in Klamath Falls, which had a pool, spa, ice skating rink, and much more. The lodge stayed in hotel rooms and our classes were held at Sky Lakes Medical Center. Our new lodge leaders learned about advanced leadership concepts taught at National Leadership Seminar, as well as information about proper unit elections, correctly conducting ceremonies, and how to be a good Elangomat. In addition, breaking news and brainstorming took place concerning this year s lodge service projects. Afterward we enjoyed what the Running Y had to offer, as well as having an Xbox tournament, movies, and other exciting activities. If you missed out this year, contact your chapter leaders who attended about what they learned and make sure you come next year! Joshua Kupelian (Immediate Past Lodge Chief) Troop W Webelos Woods Troop W and Webelos Woods are programs designed to introduce Webelos into the world of Boy Scouting. Both programs do basically the same thing, bring the Webelos to a camporee like event and let them act not as a den, but as a patrol. They cook for themselves (with adult help), and compete as patrols. Although it is an awesome program, currently only two of our Districts participate in this program. Troop W is done in DaGelMa, and Webelos Woods is done in Hyas Lamonte. In an effort to bring this program to every District, the OA has volunteered to help with the planning and running of these events. While the OA plans and coordinates the event, local troop members will still be needed to be general staff and Patrol Guides. The next year or two will be ran as a cooperative effort between those currently running it and the chapters. The chapters that currently participate in these chapters will get a feel for it and will allow the new chapters to get a feel for the program and experience before delving into it on their own. Crater Conservation Corps (c 3 ) Learn and Serve Last June the Forest Service and the OA put together an event called the Oregon 150. A total of 56 scouts and leaders participated in service projects, merit badges, and fellowship. This coming year the lodge has decided to take a more active role in the planning, development, and execution of this event. The idea of the event is to bring in troops and arrowmen from all over the council to do an annual service project similar to Arrow Corps 5. While the Forest Service gets the benefit from all of the volunteer service hours, the scouts get the benefit of the Forest Service s knowledge during the merit badge workshop sessions. Many ideas have been put forth as to how the event shall be run and when, if you have suggestions or are willing to participate you may contact Andrew Blocher at Patch Committee Our lodge is known for great quality patches from collectors all over the country. However one problem we have continually had in the past is getting a design made, approved, and then shipped to the maker. So to avoid the difficulties we ve had in the past, the LEC has decided to make an official patch committee. While anyone may submit a patch design, the committee will be responsible for organizing the designs and presenting them to the LEC. If you have any interest in being on the patch committee contact the Patch Advisor, Gary Galligan, at
7 Page 7 Camp Makualla Promoting the BSA s camping program is one of the fundamental purposes of the Order of the Arrow. As Arrowmen, each of us has a duty to promote long term summer camp and support its mission. Lo La Qam Geela members have three ways in which they can positively impact our summer camping programs. The first way in which arrowmen can help with this mission is direct service to our camps. Each and every year, the Order of the Arrow is essential in opening our camps for the summer. The cheerful service given by every one of our members, at or deals is irreplaceable and a tremendous help to our camp facili ties. The second way Arrowmen can help is to encourage their units to attend our local Boy Scout summer camp Camp Makualla. Summer 2010 will be Makualla s 73rd year of operation, and there are many awesome changes taking place at camp. The high adventure program continues to expand, offering back country treks to Diamond Peak, Mt. Thielsen, and Cowhorn Mountain. There are live rock climbing excursions offered at Smith Rock and Williamson, and opportunities to go kayaking, white water rafting and canoeing. The merit badge program will be expanding to include two brand new merit badges Scouting Heritage and Geocaching. Photog raphy and Radio merit badge will also be added to the merit badge line up. Our facilities continue to improve every year. Our waterfront continues to take advantage of the beautiful swimming and boating opportunities available at Crescent Lake. In Summer 2010, a brand new archery range will be opening. Moving the archery range will also allow expansion in the Shot gun Range and additional opportunities for scouts to pursue Shotgun merit badge in the morning and open shoot in the after noons. We have also applied for an NRA grant to fund the ex pansion of our rifle range, however, the results of that grant have not yet been released. Work is underway to formulate a plan to replace the Climbing wall. A new wall design has been finalized and the council prop erties committee is beginning to work out the specifics of fund ing this project. The new climbing tower, which includes multi ple routes, rappelling, and a bouldering wall, is projected for completion in The final way in which arrowmen can support our local council camps is to serve in a staff position. Both Camp Makualla and Camp McLoughlin are seeking qualified youth and adult staff for summer Paid youth staff positions are available to arrow men age 15 and older, and staff in training positions are avail able to arrowmen age 14 and up. Adults 18+ and 21+ are espe cially needed for key area director roles. For more information on serving on summer camp staff, please contact Sue Ward at James Wilson (Makualla Camp Ranger) Volume XI, Issue 1 Lost and Found A few things have been lost by our Arrow men. Lynda Churchill has two knives and a belt buckle in her possession. If you think one of these may be yours call or Lynda Churchill and describe one to her. (541) lchurchill@grantspass.k12.or.us Lo La Qam Geela Jackets A few people have asked to order a Lo La Qam Geela jacket. The jackets are $38.50 each and include an embroidered name on the front. If you d like to order one for yourself please con tact Lynda Churchill at We d like to place our order soon, so if you d like one you need to order by February 28th. BSA Centennial Patch In Honor of the BSA s 100th anniversary the lodge created a limited edition centennial patch. They were introduced at the Lodge LLD and will only be produced for one year. Get one while you still can from the lodge trading post for $7.50. Lo La Qam Geela Facebook Group! Many of you are probably familiar with Facebook and have one yourself.
