2 2 Chiefly Thoughts My Brothers, Now that spring is here, we ve got a lot on our plates; Spring Conferences are just around the corner, and summer is just beyond that! Spring Conferences are a great opportunity for Arrowmen to give service back to their camps in a multitude of ways. Not only through Ordeal projects, but as an Elangomat, you can help the Ordeal Candidates through their long and toilsome journey. Being on a ceremonies team at a conference is a great way to give service, too! Whether it s in the Pre-Ordeal, Ordeal, Brotherhood, or Vigil ceremony, it will go a long way. If you are interested in being an Elangomat, or on a Ceremony team, contact your chapter chief or adviser. Like I said before, summer is almost here! I m finishing up my first year at UW-Eau Claire and getting ready for summer camp staff starting in June. Just because you troop doesn t meet during the summer, doesn t mean you can t still be involved in scouting. There are many opportunities for fun this summer. If you are going to camp with your troop at a Bay-Lakes Council Camp, be sure to earn the Kon Wapos Award! It s a camp participation award that is easy to earn, and the patch looks great! If you are camping at Bear Paw or Gardner Dam during weeks five or six, talk to your scoutmaster to see if your troop can either come early or stay late at camp to participate in ArrowTour. The Central Region ArrowTour caravan is rolling through Bear Paw Scout Camp on Saturday July 25 th in the afternoon. If your troop is interested in this opportunity, contact the Bear Paw or Gardner Dam Camp Director, Will Curl or Raquel Strayer, respectively. Just a week after ArrowTour is NOAC 2015 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. This weeklong experience is once in a lifetime. Over 15,000 Arrowmen from across the country will convene for fun and excitement. If you are part of the contingent, make sure you complete the online forms through the national events registration system. For more information about NOAC, contact the NOAC chairman, Mike Laes. With this many opportunities, there s surely a way to have fun in scouting this summer! See you on the trail, Preston Podolske Spring/Fall Conferences Arrowmen, Coming up fast are Spring Conferences. May 29 th -31 st at Bear Paw and Rokilio, and June 5 th -7 th at Gardner Dam, Hiawatha, and Twin Lakes. These weekends are great opportunities for service hours, as well as inductions. Newly elected Ordeal Candidates will be completing their Ordeal, eligible Arrowmen can seal their membership by completing their Brotherhood, and those Arrowmen who have given extraordinary service will keep their Vigil. Service projects at Spring Conferences are designed to get the council camps prepared for the summer camp season. Project include installing the dock at Rokilio s waterfront, stacking wood for campfires, painting walls, and preparing the dining halls for the summer. The more people that come, the more ready the camps will be for the summer season. At the end of the summer are Fall Conferences. They run the same way as Spring Conferences, but in reverse. There s still all of the inductions happening, but instead of getting the camps ready for camp, we help to get them ready for winter. If you want to go to these events, check out to register. 3 3 Adviser Minutes IT STARTS WITH US The Ripple Effect I ve been talking about the ripple effect for a few months. The National OA Conference theme It starts with us, talks about how one person doing just a small positive thing can create a ripple effect like that of a small pebble tossed into the pond. The ripples spread out from the point of contact and move out far and wide. Your small positive actions can make a big difference. I hope you are planning to attend the spring and fall conferences. You will have the opportunity to create ripples with your service at camp. The service projects will help get camp ready for the many Scouts, leaders and parents who will be attending one of the Bay-Lakes Council camps. I d like to challenge each of us to start a ripple with our new Ordeal members joining the OA during the spring and fall conferences. We can all reach out to the new members and welcome them into the brotherhood of cheerful service. Introduce yourself, get to know the new members, invite them to future chapter meetings, encourage them to attend the next lodge event and mostly make them feel welcome, so they want to be a part of something special. Let s have a little fun. I m going to be getting around to the spring and fall conferences. If you see me and give me the code words, ripple effect and share something you ve done to create a ripple, I ll have something for you. W.W.W. Mike Mailand Kon Wapos Lodge Adviser With spring here, that means our Spring Conferences are just around the corner. The conferences are a very important part of our lodge year. There are many things going on at these events. We induct new members, convert Ordeal members to Brotherhood, some will keep the Vigil, and we provide great service to our camps. Unlike our Spring Fellowship, Fall Rendezvous, Section Conclave, and LLD, Conferences are the only event we hold that has aspects of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service. If you haven t already, register at a conference near you for spring and fall. We have almost 400 Ordeal Candidates that will need active knowledgeable Arrowmen to show them the way. Yours is W.W.W. 4 4 Section Conclave Update What s a better way to ring in the new Scouting year than to go to Section C-1B Conclave September at L.E. Phillips Scout Reservation in Rice Lake, WI! What is Section Conclave? Well, Conclave is the highlight of the year for Arrowmen in Section C-1B. Now you may be asking, what is this C-1B business you keep talking about? C-1B is how we identify our part of the country. The C stands for the Central Region- North Dakota south to Kansas, and east to West Virginia. The 1 stands for Area 1- North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin, and Michigan s Upper Peninsula. The B stands for the eastern half. There are five lodges in Section C-1B, Kon Wapos (that s you), Tom Kita Chara (North Central Wisconsin), Otyokwa (Northwestern Wisconsin), Ni-Sanak-Tani (West Central Wisconsin), and Blue Ox (Southeast Minnesota). At Section Conclave, more than 200 Arrowmen from the five lodges in Section C-1B will come together for an awesome weekend of fun and fellowship. L.E. Phillips has a new high ropes course, including a zip line that will be open during the weekend, and there will also be a dunk tank where you can dunk the five lodge chiefs and the three section officers. Registration opens May 1 st, so keep a lookout on the Lodge Facebook page for a link. I hope to see you there! Preston Podolske, Kon Wapos Lodge Chief Kon Wapos Award The Kon Wapos award is an award given out at Bay Lakes Council summer camps. Its goal is to promote participation at camp and also raise awareness of the Order of the Arrow and its values of brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. As such the award is divided into three sections corresponding with those three points. The service section requires the scouter to complete service hours at camp the length of which depends on how many years of camp you have attended. The other two areas require that you complete activities corresponding to those values. Brotherhood for example requires you to participate in camp activities such as a cracker barrel or troop campfire. Cheerfulness is where participation at camp comes into play. It requires you to visit areas of camp and participate in activities there. The Kon Wapos award is a great award to help promote scouting values and get to see more of the camp. Even better you can probably earn the award by simply doing your favorite things at camp, and you get a cool patch too. Eric Feudner, Gardner Dam OA Summer Chief

5 5 KEEP & Vigil Ceremony BE A GUIDE. BE A FRIEND. BE AN EXTENDED ELANGOMAT. Do you enjoy the Brotherhood you experience in our Lodge and Order? Do you enjoy the Cheerfulness and fellowship we share? Do you enjoy Serving others? If you answer yes, then you are just who we are looking for: you are Extended Elangomat material! As Spring Conferences rapidly approach, and Fall Conferences aren't far behind, it is important that Chapters have in place a strong network of Extended Elangomats in order to help our new members through their first year in our Order. During the Ordeal at Spring and Fall Conferences, the Elangomat serves as a guide, setting the example for his Clan through the observance of strict silence, enjoying a night apart, consuming scant food, and performing arduous labor. The clans of roughly 6-10 Candidates will be assigned to the Elangomat, mostly from his Chapter. At the end of the weekend, the Elangomat will transition to the role of a friend, taking on the roles of a Nimat as an Extended Elangomat - he will keep his clan, with whom he has already gone through the Ordeal, and he will now aid them along the Trail to Brotherhood. The Extended Elangomat will work to encourage event and Chapter meeting attendance, and help the new Ordeal member to feel comfortable within the Order, as well as aid him in preparing for the new challenges of the Brotherhood. To become an Extended Elangomat, talk to your Chapter Chief or the Arrowman in charge of implementing the IKon Wapos Extended Elangomat Program in your Chapter. Yours in Wingolauchsik Witahemui, AJ Reicher, Kon Wapos Lodge Associate Adviser for Inductions The Vigil process for Kon Wapos Lodge has a new element now that we will be trying for the first time at Spring Conference. We will be testing the ceremony now for the first time since the revisions have been made. We will be calling out and recognizing the 2015 Vigil Class. The rest of the process remains the same due to national rules. Vigil Candidates or their peers may submit a nomination forms that will be reviewed by the Vigil Selection committee at a designated meeting. The candidates then have their information sent to national for review. Chapters are allowed to continue their own traditions for calling out there vigil candidates, while the lodge will also have the new Vigil Call Out available for use by the chapters. Vigils will then undergo the Vigil process at their Chapter run work weekends. In order for a candidate to be eligible for Vigil they must be a registered with the Boy Scouts of America, and be active for at least two years after receiving their Brotherhood. This year we had a light issue that was addressed and in the future we will have better communication out to those eligible for candidacy. 6 6 The Natowa As you can see the Natowa has undergone some cosmetic changes. Not only that but publication dates have been changed. The Natowa now will be published quarterly, first one mid January, second will be Lodge Spring Fellowship, third in mid summer, and lastly at Lodge Fall Rendezvous. While the Natowa will become less frequent, a mini Natowa or info sheet, will be published every month with important dates and reminders. Examples would be the Lodge calendar, chapter meeting info and a quick update of what's going on at the Lodge Level. The reason for this change is to have more meaningful information and articles. This means that Chapter Chiefs will have to send in their chapter report timely for the previous three months and the next three months. Communications chair will take the lead on publishing the info sheets every month while the secretary can focus on creating a quality newsletter. The Natowa will remain posted on the Bay Lakes Council website but by attending spring and fall events printed versions will be available. 7 7 Chapter Reports This month in Mahng chapter we have been very active! We are gearing up for our Spring Conference, which will be taking place at Camp Hiawatha June 5-7. Our Chapter Advisor has recently changed, and our new advisor, Mark Rice has a lot of innovative ideas to help us increase membership attendance, Brotherhood conversion rates, and inductions. We had successful elections and look forward to induction all of our possible candidates at Spring or Fall Conferences this year! Kyle Flickinger, Mahng Chapter Chief We had a successful Klondike Derby. The Anikwa Chapter staffed fire building and shelter building stations. The Derby was a success and we had a great time. At meetings we promoted OA High Adventure with a presentations for each base. We had a Brotherhood Review discussion as well. April 2 nd we had a Life to Eagle presentation lead by Hellen and Mr. John Knapp. We had a great turn out and we would like to thank Hellen and Mr. Knapp for doing the presentation. May 7 th will be our next chapter meeting. At that meeting we will be having food and fellowship. This will be our last meeting before summer sessions begin. We will start having meetings again in fall. Spring Conference will be held at Camp Rokilio from May 29 th to May 31 st. The conference will include service projects and social activities. We have several Anikwa Chapter Arrowmen staffing and attending NYLT. Erik Janssen, Ankiwa Chapter Chief Beshkno Chapter just had their Spring Fellowship at Viking Bow and Gun between April 17th and 19th. There, we practiced our call-out ceremonies, and gathered to have a weekend of fun fellowship. We are getting ready for our call-out ceremony at Spring Camporee, which is May 1st through the 3rd at Maywood in Sheboygan. We will be having our last chapter meeting on May 14th at LTC at 7:00pm. There we will be electing our chapter officers for the year. Our Spring Conference will be during the last weekend in May at Camp Rokilio. Matt Winkel, Beshkno Chapter Chief Witcawa chapter has been working on setting up for a new service project, and are working on getting people ready for Spring Conference for new candidates to complete their ordeal.
