1 Talligewi News Talligewi 62 Order of the Arrow Lincoln Heritage Council, BSA #205 Volume XIV, Issue II July to October 2008 Indiana Jones Discovers The Fall Fellowship An adventure awaits you at the annual Fall Fellowship October 17th to 18th at TMR. In fact so much excitement and adventure has been planned, that we have had to adopt the world renown, whip cracking, archeologist Indiana Jones as our theme for this event. In accordance with such a theme, events will include a whip accuracy game, a hidden treasure scavenger hunt and so much more. We are also planning a screening of all four Indiana Jones movies with popcorn throughout the weekend. As many of you know, the Fall Fellowship is truly unique event in our, in that it is a fun weekend that is intended to be a time to celebrate our successes of the year and relax with one another while having a good time. The cost for this years event is $12.00 or free for 2008 TalligiCard holders. While we know, that fall is a busy time of the year, we want to encourage everyone to attend this event so we can build on last years success. For more information about this event please contact Activities Chairman Sean Simpson at activities@talligewi62.org. Chiefly Speaking by Thomas Ribar, 2008 Chief In This Issue Indiana Jones & The Fall Fellowship Chiefly Speaking 1 Adviser s Corner Staff Adviser News 2 Winter Banquet News 3 Plan Now For NOAC Dues and Event Fees Set Officer Elections News LLD December 13th The months are getting colder. Our last ordeal has come and gone, and we now look ahead to Fall Fellowship. I have been impressed time and time again during my time as chief, but I still have to say the job our did cleaning up camp Tunnel Mill after the terrible wind storms was phenomenal. I hope our example of cheerful service has found its way to our newly inducted brothers. Additionally, I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations to all twelve of our newly called out Vigil candidates. You all should know that you were selected among many because you truly strived to fulfill the OA s highest purposes, and did so selflessly and humbly. Your officers and executive committee have it much easier because of the effort you put forward, and we Thomas Ribar 2008 Chief thank you for it. Our Fall Fellowship is sure to be a blast, and any Arrowmen who were inducted this year should definitely attend. Aside from all the fun and excitement, officer elections will also take place, so if you intend to run for lodge office your presence at Fall Fellowship is mandatory. I hope we have a great turnout, because I know it will be a fantastic weekend. Finally, our year is coming to a close but there are still a bunch of things going on. First, we need to plan out next year s committees, so you need to see myself or a vice chief if you are interested in taking a position as a committee chairman. Your chapters need to elect their officers for next year as well, and send notification of who is chief. And we still have Leadership Development coming up, which all current and future committee members must attend, although all Arrowmen are welcome. I hope we can close the year strong with an attitude of cheerful service. 2 Page 2 Talligewi News Adviser s Corner by Bobby Wagner, Adviser Adviser Bobby Wagner Fellow members, now that we have completed the Ordeals for the year, I would like to thank all of you for the hours of service that you have rendered to our camps. This summer we have opened and closed Camp Crooked Creek, while performing maintenance around the camp. At Tunnel Mill we cheerfully cleared countless trees that were downed by the September wind storm. All of this would not have been possible without your help. As we progress throughout the remainder of the year I would like to remind everyone of the Fall Fellowship at TMR on October 17th to 20th. The theme for this year s event is Indiana Jones, which the boys have been hard at work planning, and personally believe will be even better than last year s event. Also as we come to end of the year it is once again time to pay our Dues for This year we are going to try something new. As a reminder we will be sending a dues notice to all of our members sometimes in late October or November in the form of a post card with directions on how to pay your dues. We are also working on establishing the option of paying your dues online via the website, so keep and eye out for that option. While I know in this troubled economy money is short I want you all to remember the dues money goes to the program to support our kids and the boys should always come first. Next, I want to remind everyone of our fabulous Winter Banquet which is set for January 3 at the Holiday Inn in Clarksville, IN. This is one my favorite events and I want everyone to come kick off the new year right. Finally, I want to thank Larry Arnold for his effort and devotion in helping our grow these last two years. Larry, know that I could not have done it without you, so THANKS! Thank You Larry Arnold, Welcome Jason Wilson As some of you may already have heard Barry Oxley, our Council Executive has changed our Staff Adviser from Larry Arnold to Jason Wilson. With this change we want to take the opportunity to thank Larry for all his work over the last two years. Without Larry s help and guidance our would not have been able to achieve some of the successes we have experienced during Larry s tenure. Among these successes are the successful Patriot Games last fall in which Larry assisted the in getting all the camp sites assigned, growing our membership this year to where we can once again earn quality lodge and the countless hours of work at CCC and TMR. Larry, is has been our pleasure to have got to know you and we look forward to seeing you stay involved with the for years to come. At this time, we also want to welcome back Field Director Jason Wilson as our Staff Adviser. Jason previously served in this position from 2000 through Many of you know Jason from his years with the Council and his work as the 2007 Camp Director at CCC. Jason has a proven record of supporting the and we look forward to working with him in the future. So when you see Jason be sure to welcome him back and also be sure to thank Larry for his work.
3 Volume XIV, Issue II Page 3 Annual Winter Banquet Set For January 3rd On Saturday, January 3, 2009, we will once again be gathering at the Holiday Inn Lakeview in Clarksville, Indiana for the s annual Winter Banquet. For those of you who have never been to the Winter Banquet, it is the chance to gather and celebrate the happenings of the past year and to lay the foundation for the New Year, all while having dinner. At the Winter Banquet we will formally swear in the Officers for 2009 and conduct the winter business meeting. In addition, we will once again be unveiling the World Famous Talligewi Year in Review Slideshow which is a fan favorite each year as well as this year s highly anticipated production: Indiana Jones and the Quest for the Golden Arrow. It is important that we have a good attendance this year, as we welcome our new staff adviser, Jason Wilson and install our new officers. We want them to feel supported and to start the year off on a high note. The prices for the Winter Banquet this year are $17.00 per member or guest if received by December 25th and $20.00 thereafter. Remember, the Winter Banquet is also included with the purchase of your 2009 TalligiCard. Please note that if you are buying a TalligiCard and plan on attending the banquet to please let us know so we have an accurate catering count. For more information about the Winter Banquet please contact the committee at banquet@talligewi62.org. Registration at the 2008 Winter Banquet Plan Now For NOAC 2009 At Indiana University Calling all Arrowmen. What are you doing between August 1st and 6th next summer? Are you wanting to attend a once in a lifetime event? If so NOAC 2009 is for you. NOAC, which is short for National Order of the Arrow Conference, is going to be held next summer at Indiana University, just a short hour and half away and will have over 7, 000 Arrowmen in attendance. Among the activities at NOAC are, ceremony competitions, dance competitions, wonderful shows, training and patch trading galore. The cost for this event has yet to be set, but we are anticipating it being around $ per participant. Because space is limited we encourage anyone wanting to attend this special event to send in their $ deposit before the end of the year, so we can reserve your spot for the biggest national gathering of Arrowmen that has occurred since For more information about NOAC please contact the lodge activities committee at activities@talligewi62.org Dues and Event Fees Announced At a special lodge executive committee meeting held at the September Ordeal, the LEC passed and announced the dues and events fees for the upcoming year. While most of the fees are staying the same, please note that there will be an increase in the weekend member fee and the brotherhood fee. As always remember the best way to save money is the purchase of a TalligiCard, which includes your dues, the 2009 Winter banquet and all ordeal weekends and the fall fellowship for only $60.00, which now saves you over $32.00 over paying for everything individually. Also, please note that if paying online fees may be slightly higher Dues and Events Fees 2009 Member Dues $ TalligiCard $60.00 Ordeal Candidate Fee $30.00 Brotherhood Fee with TalligiCard Purchase $15.00 Brotherhood Fee without TalligiCard Purchase $30.00 Member Weekend Fee $15.00

This year s election will take place the morning of October 19th at TMR, upon the conclusion of the Fall Fellowship. It is strongly encouraged that any youth wishing to seek an office be at this weekend and plan accordingly for the election. In order to be eligible to run for office a youth must be under twenty one years old for all of 2009, be a dues paid member the lodge at the time of the election and a registered member of the BSA. For information about running for a office please see any current Officer or Adviser or Chief Thomas Ribar at lodgechief@talligewi62.org or Adviser Bobby Wagner at lodgeadviser@talligewi62.org. Annual LLD December 13th Is Open To All Would you like to know more about the operation of the? How the OA works? Leadership techniques in general? If so then LLD is the event for you. LLD or Leadership Development, is a youth planned and ran event that examines the above topics and so much more. While LLD is mandatory for all committee chairman, chapter chiefs, officers and their respective advisers, it is open to all OA members and is a great chance to get to know your lodge better. This LLD is scheduled for Saturday December 13th at Brotherhood from 9:00 AM until around 6:00 PM, all meals will be provided. Also overnight camping is available at the Camp Lowe Shelters and the lodge building for those wishing to come out Friday night or stay until Sunday when we will have out monthly LEC Meeting. Another items to note about LLD, is that while it is primarily a training event we also have a lot of fun in the free time, fellowshipping with our fellow Arrowmen. For more information about this event please contact Chief Thomas Ribar at lodgechief@talligewi62.org. Miscellaneous News SR-6 Conclave On April 17th to 19th the will be participating in the newly aligned SR-6 Conclave, to be hosted by Sequoyah at Camp Davey Crockett. While many details for Conclave have yet to be announced, we anticipate it to be a fun filled weekend of training, fellowship and competition. On a side note the LEC, has stated that it is their mission to reclaim the Quest Trophy after narrowing missing out, this past spring. As more details about this event become available, including the cost we will post them on the lodge website and in future newsletters. Thank You On behalf of my family, I would like to express my appreciation for the countless friends, members and fellow Scouts who came by the funeral home or sent cards and so forth, when my mother passed this past spring. It is with the knowledge that the Scouting family cared so much that helped us get through such a hard time. Again know that I will always remember your kindness and support and look forward to many happier times with all of you. YIS, John R. Benz, Esq. Associate Adviser

8 Page 8 Talligewi News Cherokee Chapter News by Michael Koprucki Greetings, fellow Arrowmen of the Cherokee and Seneca Districts! As the new chief of the Cherokee Chapter, I would like to introduce myself. I am Michael Koprucki, an Eagle Scout from Troop 243 and a Brotherhood member of the OA. As your Chapter Chief, my job will consist of building the Cherokee Chapter up from scratch, in this I need your help. The first step is to find a location central to both districts where we can have monthly chapter meetings to plan our upcoming events and activities, such as at a school or church facility. If anyone has a place that he wants to suggest, please let me know. I can be contacted via at cherokee@talligewi62.org. The next step after that is to start working with our districts to begin our chapter s programs. In the meantime, you can participate immediately in the OA at the lodge level. First, please pay your dues if you have not done so already. Then, come to the Fall Fellowship and Winter banquet, talk to your lodge officers, and find out more about what you can do to make our chapter and lodge better than ever! I look forward to meeting all of you and growing our Chapter into a force within our. Lowaneu Chapter New by Zach Atwood Lowaneu R-2 Patch Fellow Chapter members, we are now generating the plans for the next spring camporee. The camporee in May was a complete success. The staff were a really major part in the success of the outing, and we owe them a big thanks. The theme for next year s camporee is island luau. The dates are set for May 8th to 10th at TMR. We are now coming up with the events and the food for the camporee. The cost of the camporee is $12.00, but the early bird price will be $ We will be announcing the registration deadlines at district roundtables later this year, so keep an eye out. Also new to our Chapter this fall is an outing called the Fall Frolic. At the Fall Frolic there will be movies, games, and tournaments of various kinds for the youth to enjoy. The Fall Frolic will be the weekend before Thanksgiving. All venturing crews, scout troops, and webelos 2 can attend, but webelos have to stay with a scout troop. Individuals do not have to be with a venturing crews and scout troops, in order to attend, so they can come by themselves. As many of you already know the Chapter needs your support of these events, in that we use the proceeds to help build the BB and Archery range at TMR. The cost of the Fall Frolic is $15, but the early bird price is $13 if paid by the October roundtable. For more information about the camporee or fall frolic please contact us at lowaneu@talligewi62.org. High Adventure Awaits You by Sean Simpson Attention youth Arrowmen between the ages of 16 but not yet 21. How would you like the chance to visit Philmont for $ or the Northern Tier for only $ or Sea Base for $ Well 2009 is your chance, the Order of the Arrow, in conjunction with these three high adventure programs, is offering Arrowmen the chance to come out and experience the opportunity of a lifetime by participating in these programs at this reduced rate. Each of the three programs last for two full weeks. Once at the respective camps you will have the chance to do conservation projects to aid each camp for a week and then experience either a trek through the backcountry of Philmont, a voyage in the Boundary Waters of Northern Tier, or get your SCUBA certification while diving in the Florida Keys for the remainder of your stay. All that is required of you is to meet some basic program guidelines which can be found online at or by contacting Adviser, Bobby Wagner. In addition to the program fee you must provide your transportation to the camp. Do not let this opportunity pass you by. Act now and make this summer one to remember.
