1 The Pueo - The Protector The Pueo Nā Mokupuni O Lawelawe s Quarterly Newsletter LODGE HOLDS ITS ANNUAL LLD AND BANQUET Volume 1, Issue 1 January March 2011 Inside this issue: On February 5th, over 50 members of the lodge met at the Camp Hawkins cam site on Camp HM Smith to participate in the annual Lodge Leadership Development and Banquet. Meal preparations Section Adviser Ed Chun and Lodge Adviser John McMillan discuss the Banquet plans. were made all day Saturday during the LLD by our usual battery of cooks, including head cook Terry Kai, Ed Chun, Keith Yamasaki, Alex Meza, and George Kamimura. Newly elected Lodge Chief Zach Storch introduced his new Lodge officers: First VC of Administration, Sean Williams; Second VC for Program, Nathaniel ElmoreKauai), Third VC for Finance, Ricky Goodwin; and Oahu Island Chief Elliott Park. Big island Chief Albert Santiago III will remain in place for Lodge Advisor John McMillan Sr. announced the recipients of the 2010 Founder s Awards. Edwin Chun was presented as the adult recipient, and Justin Bisel will be presented with his award as the youth at the next Big Island ordeal. Both are very deserving members. Ed Chun has New Officer take their place and accept their responsibilities. Fellowship, training, and fun. The banquet was a huge success. served for several years as Section Advisor, and Justin was both Big Island Chief and Section Vice Chief. The Vigil Honor Candidates were called by Vigil Advisor Stephen Cowland. Those invited into the Vigil triangle were Blane Nagareda, William Albrecht, Andrew Cowland, and John Henry Felix. The Vigil Honor ceremony will be held at a later date on both Oahu and the Big Island. Finally, Lodge Advisor John McMillan presented Certificates of Appreciation to a number of adult advisors. Advisers Corner 2 NOAC LLD Brings Out Record Attendance Lodge Improves Communications Founders Awards 4 New Vigil Class 4 Up-Coming Events for March and April From the Section Chief 5 6 Aloha to all of the members of Nā Mokupuni O Lawelawe Lodge. As we begin a new year, I would like to give you my vision for the Lodge in 2011: To do that I would like to tell you a little about what the lodge did last year. In 2010 the lodge was named a Quality Lodge for the sixth straight year. Another important achievement for us was how we expanded service to the council, districts and the local CHIEFLY SPEAKING By Zachary Storch community. We have set the bar high and have a very good goal to aspire to again this year. My goals this year are very simple. First, I would like to significantly increase the membership of the lodge. As our membership grows, so does our ability to expand our programs, events and service. A strong election process and re-registration effort will help us achieve this goal. Second, I 1 wish to increase participation of chapter members in Lodge events. The Lodge has many areas where our membership can help out: ordeals, event committees, and ceremonies to name a few. I invite all of you to find something that sparks your interest! Finally, to have fun! The OA is a great place to come out and join in on fun and fellowship. Won t you give it a try? I know you be glad you did! ~ Zach Storch
2 Page 2 The Pueo - The Protector ADVISERS CORNER By John McMillan Hello and happy New Year to the Arrowmen of Nā Mokupuni O Lawelawe Lodge! 2010 was a very successful year for the Lodge and we have a lot to be proud of. To begin with, this year marks the sixth straight year that we were selected as a Quality Lodge. Also this year, two of our fellow arrowmen earned the prestigious Founder s Award and four of our brother arrowmen were bestowed the Vigil honor. These are just a few of the highlights! As this year begins, we have a lot on our plate. As always, we will focus all year long on the individual goals for Quality Lodge. Most importantly though, we will need focus on our membership. Year in and year out, we seem, to struggle with this one item more than all the rest. Whether it s the election process, getting those elected to attend one of the two ordeals, or something as simple as just getting our arrowmen to renew their annual dues, we need to find a way to crack the nut on this one, so we can fulfill the QL requirements earlier than mid December! Another area I believe we need to focus on is our Ceremonies. The lodge has always prided itself on the quality of our Ceremonies teams. In order to maintain this level of quality, we are looking for those interested in ceremonies to join the team. If you are a budding actor, enjoy commanding the stage, or just like to hear yourself talk, you might be just who we are looking for. We need members at both the Chapter and the Lodge level and you can do as much or as little as you like. Take your pick: Arrow of Light ceremonies, Eagle feather ceremonies, Ordeals, whatever! Talk to your Chapter Chief or any member of your Lodge leadership for details. I am excited about the possibilities as we press forward into I want to thank you all for your dedication, participation and your service to the lodge. I believe we have the right leadership in the right places to make this a very fun and successful year. I invite you all out to join us at our lodge and chapter events, have some fun and share the fellow ship. This is your Lodge. Help us make it what you want it to be! Michigan State 2012 NOAC 2009 has only just come to an end, but preparations are already underway for the 2012 NOAC at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. The tentative date for the 2012 NOAC is July 0th through August 4th. NOAC will be held three years from now, rather than the traditional two, so that the following NOAC, 2015, will fall on the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow. MSU hosted NOAC in 2006 and they have outstanding resources and a campus that is very easy to navigate. 2
3 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page LLD BRINGS OUT RECORD ATTENDANCE. The Lodge Leadership Development (LLD) workshop was held Feb 4-5 at Camp Smith. This training was for Lodge and Chapter officers, advisors, and other members interested in the workings of the lodge. This year more than 0 thirty arrowmen attended. Many camped overnight and a few others just came out for the workshop on Saturday. The LLD program was conducted by members of the Kapiolani Chapter, and was directed by Chapter Chief and LLD Chairman Trevor Hook. Training ran from 9am to 2pm and the topics were: Working with Adults, Motivating Members, and How to Run an Effective Chapter Meeting. Sessions were lively, well prepared, and the instructors were obviously experts in their topics. In between sessions, the group was led in some fun games by Spirit Leader Mitchell Kwock. In the afternoon, two additional workshops were held to introduce our members to the new OA Online Portal, and prepare the lodge calendar for the next 18 months. This fall, members of the LLD committee will travel to the Big Island to conduct the exportable LLD training for our Big Island brothers! LODGE IMPROVES COMMUNICATIONS The National Order of the Arrow recently upgraded their two electronic programs so that the lodges now have the ability to easily send s to our members. This was very timely, since Aloha Council had just changed the council website and we no longer had the ability to post our OA calendar or take online registrations. In the future the Lodge will to all members our registration forms, event announcements, newsletters, and anything that you might have expected to be mailed in the past. The first such was the 2011 Lodge Membership Registration Form for payment of dues. This was sent out in mid December. You are receiving this newsletter via this process. Since this will be the primary means of receiving communications from your Lodge and Chapter, it is important that all members keep their addresses current in the Lodgemaster database. This can be done by noting your address on any event registration form, or by sending an to Financial Advisor Bob Hann at : hannr001@hawaii.rr.com. We expect this process will not only save us money on postage, but also provide better, more timely and more frequent communications to our members. INDIAN SUMMER 2011, CATCH THE SPIRIT
4 Page 4 The Pueo - The Protector OA Founder's Award The Founder's Award was created by the Order of the Arrow in 1981 to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to the lodge. The award is reserved for an Arrowman who demonstrates to his fellow Arrowmen that he memorializes in his everyday life the spirit of achievement as described by founder E. Urner Goodman. `The award is a handsome bronze medallion bearing the likeness of E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson with a wooden base. At our Lodge 2011 Vigil Honor Class Named Banquet on February 5, 2011 Nā Mokupuni O Lawelawe Lodge announced and presented its 2011 Founder's Award to Mr. Edwin Chun and Justin Bisel Congratulations, Ed and Justin on this well deserved recognition!
