Congratulations! You have now completed the Ordeal! You are officially an Order of the Arrow Brother. So what now? I can say from personal experience the OA is what you make of it. In the OA you have to do stuff for yourself which is easy and very rewarding. If you put in a little effort you can do whatever you want, you can be a dancer, a ceremonialist, a Chapter chief, and so much more. I went through my Ordeal a year ago and I have already been a Chapter Chief, I am a dancer, and I am VC of Communications. Find something you like, seek help, and have fun! About the OA The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouting's National Honor Society. It sets out to recognize those youth and adult campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives, to develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit, to promote Scout camping, and to crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others. The Order of the Arrow was founded in 1915 by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson. The membership levels of the Order of the Arrow are Ordeal, Brotherhood, and Vigil Honor. Ordeal Brotherhood Vigil Honor Some Key OA Terms: LEC Lodge Executive Committee. The PLC of the Lodge is held each month. Elangomat The Arrowmen who guides candidates through the Ordeal. LLD Lodge Leadership Development. Leadership training held in December specifically for the OA Lodge.

2 Quiver Page 2 Now that you are in the OA, what to do? A recommended timeline for you. Now You have completed the Ordeal. Congratulations! Next, you need to know which Chapter you are in. You are all in Egwa Tawa Dee Lodge, which makes up the Atlanta Area Council, but each District is made up of a separate Chapter. So the Chapter is the smaller unit and the Lodge is the larger one. A lodge is composed of many Chapters. Look on the next page to identify which Chapter you are in and to see where and when they hold their Chapter meetings. In the next few weeks - Go to your Chapter s meetings and sign up for Lodge events. Three of your greatest OA resources are your OA handbook, Lodge Planbook, and our Lodge Website at Skim these to learn some valuable information on the OA. On the left hand side of our website you will see something called 2012 OA Dues and Event Registration. Click on this, and you will be taken to the registration page where you can register for all Lodge events online. If you are unable to register online you can submit the paper registration form found on the same page. Some upcoming events which you should sign up for are Summerfest and Fall Fellowship. Both of these are very fun events where you can meet new people and get used to the fun of OA events. Descriptions of these events can be found on page 4 of this edition of the Quiver. In addition, make sure you get signed up with your Chapter s list along with the Lodge s list. To get updates from the Lodge, go to our website and enter your on the right hand side of the page. Any more information you may need can be found on our Lodge Website. This includes a Lodge calendar, history of the OA, and Officer contact information. In the upcoming weeks you need to find out what you are interested in. If you are interested in improving communication in our Lodge, run for your Chapter Secretary position. If you would like to be on a ceremony team join your Chapter s team and if your Chapter does not have one you can make one. If you want to make regalia, dance, or drum, you can do that too by joining or starting a team. One person can make a difference in how successful a lodge is. You can be that person. 10 months from now - Sign-up and go through Brotherhood if you feel you are ready to take this next step in the Order of the Arrow. Doing this shows you are committed to the OA. Also, unlike the Ordeal, only takes a few hours. The requirements for Brotherhood can be found in your OA Handbook or on our Lodge website. By now you can forge your own trail in the OA. Only you know what you really want from the Order of the Arrow. By getting involved now you can greatly increase the productivity of your Chapter and our Lodge for years to come. If your Chapter is weaker than you would like, YOU can take charge and work with your Chapter Advisor and come to events and get others interested. You can be the change you want in the OA

4 Quiver Page 4 Words from the Chief: Brothers, I would like to welcome all of our newest brothers to the Order of the Arrow and our Lodge, Egwa Tawa Dee #129. Egwa is one of the best Lodges in the country and full of some of the best scouts in the country. The leadership potential in the lodge is enormous and I only see great things coming out of all of our new Arrowmen. In the past we have had section chiefs, region chiefs and national chiefs. We have also had a huge number of nationally recognized ceremony teams and individual dancers. What the Order of the Arrow has to offer is something that can not be matched in any other organization. For me the OA inspired me to continue on my scouting journey when I was a low point and wasn t sure if I was going to continue scouting. As of now I am diligently working on my eagle project and should expect to see its completion this summer. I hope that the Order inspires you to do something great and we can provide any support or help you may need; all you have to do is ask. We would like some volunteers to help jump start this program. For now, we would like to have small booths promoting things such as patch trading, drum, dance, and ceremonies, as well as high adventure. SOAPBOX DERBY RACE FOR FALL FELLOWSHIP: We will be racing down the hill between the amphitheater and Council ring. Cvmpe represented Egwa well in ceremonies medaling in both PreOrdeal and Ordeal. I would like to congratulate Allen Bufford for placing in Men's Traditional Dance Competition and Achewon & TQB for placing in drum. I would also like to thank everyone else that came to Conclave. 5 Some Upcoming Events You Should Sign Up For Summerfest - Summerfest is an opportunity for new Arrowmen to learn about the Order of the Arrow, what activities are available in and outside the Lodge, how to train a ceremony team and how to be a ceremony judge. The Ordeal is fully explained by the Characters who performed the ceremony so new Arrowmen can have a complete understanding of everything done and said. Ideas to help build a strong Chapter and keep it active are also on hand as well as an active drum and teepee demonstration. An afternoon of craft sessions followed by a great cookout makes sure there is definitely something for everyone. Fall Fellowship - Each fall the members of the Lodge gather for a weekend of fellowship and fun. Many classes, ranging from Elangomat training to moccasin making, are taught in the morning and in the afternoon an array of fun games and activities is offered. Fall Fellowship is also where the Lodge inducts new Vigil Honorees and elects new officers. In the past themes for Fall Fellowship have ranged anywhere from OA High Adventure to Highland Games. Fall Ordeal- Now that you are an Arrowmen, you can go to the Ordeals as a Brother. At the Ordeals you have the option of being an Elangomat or just helping out with your Chapter. Elangomats are the Arrowmen who guide you through your Ordeal. If you do not wish to be an Elangomat, you can just become adjusted to the Lodge and your Chapter by helping out with your Chapter Cracker-barrel or helping set up ceremony sites. OA Getting Started Checklist These are some things which would be helpful to do to get started, but of course you are not limited to these. You have visited the Lodge website, read your OA handbook. You have your Lodge Flap sewn onto your uniform You have attended your Chapter meetings You are getting involved with your Chapter; either ceremonies, drum, dance, a position of leadership etc. You have become your Troop s OA representative if your troop does not have one You have attended Lodge Events such as Fall Ordeal (usually as an Elangomat), Summerfest, or Fall Fellowship. Sign up for these using the Lodge website By early 2013 you ve paid your dues (paid online) to remain an Arrowmen in good standing with the Lodge. Your Ordeal registration paid for your dues for this year You have attained the membership level of Brotherhood About Our Organization The Order of the Arrow is Scouting s national honor society, its purpose, to serve the scouts, troops, and communities it is associated with. As you read this letter keep in mind that it is your obligation to keep cheerful service in mind.
