1 April 2017 Volume 24 no.1 The The Thirty-Niner STUDENT OF THE MONTH March 2017 Haley DeWitt Papillion-LA Vista High School Haley DeWitt, March student of the Month, with a cumulative GPA of 4.0, is involved as a Student Ambassador, Tri-M Music Honor Society, a Foundation Ambassador, National Honor Society Member, Band-Wind Ensemble, Senior Committee, HOSA, Leo Service Club and Student Council. As is evident, she is a busy gal. Haley s honors include: Girl Scout Gold Award, Lions Young Leaders in Service Gold Award, and AP Scholar with Honors Award. Community Involvement also appears on her busy schedule. Haley is a volunteer at Children s Hospital, Girl Scouts, La Vista Mayor s Youth Council, and Mable Rose Assisted Living. When she s not volunteering, or participating in school activities, Haley enjoys playing the piano or flute, running, reading, and traveling. Quite a busy young lady!! It appears that Haley is headed for a career in the Health Occupation Field. Her Health Science Teacher comments, Haley has competed and scored high in areas such as Extemporaneous Speaking, Creative Problem Solving and Knowledge Test at the Nebraska Health Occupations Students of America state conference. As a leader, she is flexible, easy to work with, and shares creative ideas with members of the leadership team. Way to Go! Congratulations, Haley De Witt! 1

As we begin a new Elk year, let us continue to make this more successful than last year. The past year we had substantial growth in membership, great improvement in our lodge facilities due to our members. Hopefully, by the time this bulletin arrives, the new Lodge sign will be in installed and operational. Several projects that have been suggested for this year will come before the Board of Directors for discussion and/or voted upon. Let s continue to make our Lodge grow with new members. As always, volunteers are needed for up and coming events especially the Children s Easter Party on April 9 th and Youth Awards Banquet on May 1st. 3 LOYAL KNIGHT Spring has finally arrived!! I hope!! These next couple months promise to be busy. We have Installation of Officers on April 8 th at 6PM, followed by a Hors d Oeuvres Reception, Announcement of Elk of the Year and Officer of the Year!! Please join us to celebrate these two members as Jerry announces them!! On April 9 th, following breakfast, we will have the Easter Party for Elks children and grandchildren from 1PM to 4 PM. Cake Walk, Easter Egg Hunt, go fishing for Goodies, make a Peep Car, Watch Easter Bunny Movies, and other fun things along with our live Easter Bunny. We need lots of helpers for this special event!! Hope to see you there!! SAVE THE DATE for the Student Awards Banquet on May 1 st at 6:30 PM. We have scholars that have gone all the way to Nationals this year. Please help us celebrate their success!! Carol Waldow Loyal Knight Field Trip with Completely Kids Carol Joy Holling Retreat Ashland May 6th Our Lodge has partnered with Completely Kids to take 50 kids who are involved in their programs on a one day field trip where they will participate in a High Ropes Course and Ziplining. These kids are from 4 th to 6 th grade. We received the $2,000 Beacon Grant from ENF for this project. The Beacon Grant is to be used for an ongoing youth project and this is our third year for this event. The Elks will be providing several volunteers for the trip and Completely Kids will provide 6 staff members. By having the opportunity to attend this field trip, youth will learn essential life-skills in the areas of leadership and social relationships, which will allow them to be successful in their next stage of life. I have a couple of Elks scholars attending and need some Elk members to also volunteer to help. This is an active event so dress comfortably and be ready to help the kids when needed. One primary goal for the year is to increase our Membership. We are delighted to have initiated five new members thus far this year, each bringing their own talents and good ideas. We recently had our second fundraiser of the year with an All You Can Eat Taco Night. Our thanks to the Elks for again providing us this opportunity. A big Thank You to all of you who supported us in these two fundraisers. We re off to a good start on our Benevolence activities and Veterans Service Project. Please mark your calendar for April 8 and join us for our Spring Salad Luncheon and Style Show. The Fashions and show will be provided by Christopher & Banks, Shadow Lake Store. We are asking for reservations by April 5 by contacting me or any member DOE. We look forward to an afternoon of food, fun, fashion, and friendship and hope many of you will join us. A Flier is included in this Newsletter with more information. We are planning some fun activities and fundraisers throughout the year. Please watch our Bulletin Board in the foyer for announcements. 8 KID S EASTER PARTY It s time once again for the kids Easter party April 9 th from 1 to 4pm at the Omaha Elks Lodge! We will have, of course, the Easter Bunny, and egg hunt, snacks, crafts and more fun than anyone will know what to do with. Bring your kids and family down to enjoy an afternoon at the Lodge. If you have a group who would enjoy setting up a craft table for the kids, let me know. Age groups will be formed for the egg hunt.
