3 Neighbourhood News November 2018 Page 3 The Centre closes for 2018 on Friday 21 December at 1 pm. We reopen in 2019 on Wednesday, 2 January at 8.30 am. All Programs and Centre activities will continue until closing. Please contact the Centre if you have any questions about your Group s Christmas Party or End-of-Year breakup. The Street by Street project is seeking community-minded people to turn streets into communities in your area, through simple social activities. They will support you to do this. Donating your hair to be made into a wig for someone who cannot grow hair of their own is a generous gift and rewarding experience. It s very important to us that not a single gift is wasted, so please be sure to follow these simple steps to ensure your hair meets our requirements. All hair donated to AAAF is sent to wigmakers who specialize in making hair pieces for medical purposes. We receive funds from the wigmakers and these go to support our Wigs For Kids program, which provides financial grants to help families with the costs of wigs. So your hair donation helps kids with Alopecia Areata twice! Before You Start: Requirements In order to donate your locks to be made into Wigs for Kids, your hair must be: 36cm in length or longer; Free from permanent or semi-permanent hair dye; Secured firmly at the top and bottom of the pony tail or braid; Clean and dry when cut; Until recently AAAF accepted hair down to 30cm in length. However, recent changes with our wigmakers mean that we are now asking for longer lengths of 36cm or above. 6 Neighbourhood News November 2018 Page 6 COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD Up to 700 people gathered in Cairns last Friday night for the Reclaim The Night Walk. Staff from the MCNC team were proud to march together with everyone to raise awareness about violence and sexual offences against women. The event had added significance this year due to the tragic case of Toyah Cordingly which has rocked our region. Many people feel sad and angry about what has happened, and taking part in the walk was a way to show solidarity while the police continue to hunt for the perpetrator. Seen a dead or injured Wallaby? Call Management Committee We are calling for people who may be interested in becoming a part of the Centre s Management Committee. 8 Neighbourhood News November 2018 Page 8 The third intake of the Marlin Coast Skills Development Program - Building Your Future Skilling Queenslanders for Work Project, graduated on 12 October with four participants not in attendance. This special occasion was attended by Councillor Jessie Richardson, members of the MCNC Management Committee and students from past and current training groups. Andrew Ferrerya is pictured with the Resilience Award he was presented for recognition to his dedication and commitment in overcoming barriers to achieve success. Our current Cert III group at Simulation training 4 th intake of Skilling Queenslanders for Work Project. This group will be commencing 120 hours of professional placement on Monday 22 nd October in either Aged Care or Disability; everyone is a little nervous but really looking forward to gaining their Certificate in Individual Support and finding employment in the Health Care Sector.
