NAWIC News October, 2016 Message From Your President Dear Members: The days are getting shorter and the evenings are getting brisk. A sure sign that fall is on the way. Speaking of fall, remember to send in your early bird registration for the Fall Conference due by September 30th. The registration costs goes up $15 on October 1st. The hotel reservation cut-off date to get a discount is September 28. This is a great way to experience a NA- WIC regional event without having to leave home. I am looking for a volunteer to be the 2017 WIC Week chair, and I still have not found a volunteer to take over Professional Development and Education (PDE). The PDE chair would only need to plan 7 meetings, as our schedule is filled until January. 3 3 Chapter News & Announcements 2016 FALL CONFERENCE ABOUT OUR CHAPTER Celebrating our 50th year, the Akron Chapter #124 was charted in Membership includes business owners, project managers, engineers, architects, attorneys, accountants, estimators, marketing professionals, office managers, safety coordinators, sales reps, construction managers, administrative assistants, trades women, and many others. You can expect to meet a diverse group of women who value networking opportunities, community service, real-life experience and professionalism. The investment in NAWIC is on an annual basis and is advantageous for women in the industry. Please join us! You may attend our monthly meeting or visit our website for more information. Fall Conference is just around the corner on October 21 & 22, Our Chapter & Director Mangas has been working on the plans. Registration is now open and you ll find a registration form on page 4 of this newsletter. The location is Holiday Inn West 4073 Medina Road, Akron. Hope to see you there! Registration is being handled by Missy Amos & Mary Ford. Form Coordinator Program, Sponsorship, Thank You Notes are being handled by Amber Duco & Pamela Krutz printing. 5 5 SEPTEMBER S MEETING RECAP We had our installation of officers for the new year presented by the Immediate Past President Mickey Reiger. A big thanks to all the members that stepped up to the challenge of helping to guide our Chapter. We also presented one of our scholarship winners with their scholarship check. Doneisha Hawkins is attending Kent State University. Shauntell Forney read her essay. Congratulations and good luck with your career. Mardi Gauer the Chair of the 2017 Style Show in March gave a brief description of it. She is also interested in having someone work as co-chair with her this year that would then take over for the 2018 Style Show. Pamela Krutz went over information on the upcoming Fall Conference that we are hosting in October Next Month s Meeting is November 9th. 6 6 Congratulations To Our Charter Members Evelyn Jones & Gloria Litwiller NAWIC Akron Chapter #124 On 50 Years as Members! Our Chapter is privileged to have 2 members that were here at the start of our chapter back in We d like to acknowledge them and let them know how much we appreciate all they have done during their span of membership. Both of them are of course retired now but have continued to be active members after their retirement. Evelyn Jones still attends most of our meetings and is also our Sunshine Chair person. We presented her with her 50 year pin on May 23rd at Prime 93 with a special get together with a number of members. Gloria Litwiller also attended most meetings until she moved to Georgia to be near family. On August 29, 2016, members Mickey Rieger, Anke Myers, and Missy Amos surprised founding member Gloria Litwiller at her assisted living home in Social Circle, GA and presented her with her 50 year pin. The members then took Gloria out for lunch at the Mystic Grill in Covington. Gloria will be turning 90 on December 9, We will be putting a care package together to send to her, so if you would like to include anything bring it to the October or November meeting. 8 8 AMEC SAN ANTIONIO 2016 REPORT I attended the 61 st Annual Meeting and Education Conference in San Antonio, Texas from Wednesday August 17 to Saturday, August 20, The welcome reception Wednesday night was a Fiesta themed event. The food was awesome and we all took pictures with sombreros and line danced. Thursday morning started with region pictures, then a great presentation by key note speaker Jenn Lee. Then was the annual meeting and industry luncheon awards. The afternoon consisted of various workshops of which I attended; Navigating the Barriers, Detours, not a Deterrent; and Building Bridges to Forge Successful Relationships. Friday included an installation luncheon, various workshops, and an awards gala. I took a workshop entitled Zap the Gap which covered the dealing with the four generations in the workforce today. Nicole Levine from Exelon spoke of being in charge of a crew of lineman during hurricane Katrina and she dealt with being one of three women in the midst of hundreds of men. New national president Connie Leipard spoke about many issues that I have never heard a national president address, most specifically, was gender gap, although she did not call it so. She is committed to breaking the barrier of the pay gap. I am impressed because I feel like NAWIC might finally be relevant to the issues facing women in construction today rather than a social and networking club. Saturday concluded the conference with our Northeast Regional meeting presented by newly installed region director Jenny Mangas, and I attended two seminars; WIC Week; and Leverage Your Best: Increase NAWIC s Influence through Membership/Marketing/PR. My flight home was disastrous, and I spent 14 hours at various airports because the incoming plane to SAT was struck by lightning. A few ideas that I have brought back with me to discuss with the chapter are: Billboard for WIC Week: Are you a women in construction? akronnawic.org We need to review our By-laws. Check with other industry associations to see if they will match membership cost and give us a chapter membership so that we can be more involved in the industry and attend their meetings to get the NAWIC name out there. Make a vocational school the focus of WIC Week rather than a college. College students have already chosen their path, but HS students might not know of the opportunities.
