2 and Hunger Symposium 2007 Services Network of Rochester, NY invites you to join more than 250 attendees for the 2007 Western New York & Hunger Symposium. The goal of this year s Symposium is to showcase various resources and services available to providers who continue to address homelessness and hunger in our community. The Symposium will consist of various workshops for program staff, management and consumers as well as networking and exhibitor opportunities. Services Network is a 60-member/agency network, which is comprised of providers and agencies that offer services to homeless individuals and families. The mission of the network is to facilitate networking, coordinating, consulting, and fund raising among individuals who work for/with agencies that provide high quality accessible and effective health, social, housing and other services to individuals who are homeless. In addition to the annual symposium, The Rochester/Monroe County Continuum of Care Team will present a briefing; Housing Options for All, A Strategy to End ness in Rochester/Monroe County. This special presentation will be held one hour before the Symposium opening address. Symposium Logistics s and Hotel Information The Clarion Riverside Hotel is the Symposium location and designated hotel. The Clarion Riverside Hotel is located at 120 East Main Street, Rochester, NY off of interstate 490. The Clarion is offering a room rate of $85 per night on September 18 th -19 th. Attendees should call the hotel directly at (585) to make reservations by August 27 th. Parking is available at the Clarion garage and South Avenue Garages for an average cost of $7.00 per day. Please allow 30 minutes to park during peak hours. Ground and Air Transportation - The Clarion Riverside Hotel offers free shuttle transportation from the Rochester Airport (ROC) and the Amtrak Train Station. Mr. Mangano was recently nominated as one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People. In 2006 he was named by Governing magazine as the first Federal official ever to be honored with its Public Official of the Year Award. Mr. Mangano has been recognized by mainstream and business media in the United States for his leadership on the issue of homelessness and new results in ending homelessness being achieved in cities across the country through the National Partnership created by the Council. The Council was named as one of the 2007 "Top 50 Government Innovations" nationally by Harvard University's John F. 4 10:00am - 11:45am Workshop Descriptions Session I A. Co-Occurring Substance Abuse & Mental Health Disorders: Craig Johnson, Monroe Correctional Facility. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of contemporary understandings of Substance Abuse and the most common Mental Health conditions. We will then review a handful of the key concepts that will drive our work with persons with co-occurring conditions for probably the next decade. When consumers present these days with both substance use issues and mental health concerns, it is the norm, not the exception. Regardless of our professional or helping role, we have evolved some universal understandings that are already evident in some best practice applications. Some case examples, a brief video and group discussion will help accomplish the learning goals. B. Hunger Busters: Sue Segelman, Nutrition Outreach Project, YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County. In this session, participants will learn the basics of the Food Stamp Program, other federal nutrition programs such as WIC, & local innovative projects that help reduce hunger. C. The Dynamics of Domestic Violence: Paula J. Sheinberg Alternatives for Battered Women. This workshop details the dynamics of domestic violence. A panel of experts from all of the departments of ABW will discuss themes relevant to the topic including: the impact of DV on children, why victims stay in a violent relationship, planning for safe exits, securing legal assistance, helping teens recognize the warning signs of unhealthy relationships and addressing a victim who discloses that he/she is being hurt. D. Veterans: Carol Zimmerman, Veterans Outreach Center. This workshop provides an overview of services and community-based resources for homeless veterans. The facilitator will also discuss current issues and concerns that impact Gulf War Veterans who are homeless. E. Housing Funds I (Capital): Rick Umholtz, OTDA Bureau of Housing Services, Vicki Vigorito, HUD Buffalo, Alma Balonon-Rosen, Enterprise Community Partners. This panel presentation will discuss public and private sources for capital funding (brick and mortar) for housing projects for the homeless. F. State/Federal Advocacy Issues: Steve Piasecki, Supportive Housing Network NY. This session will provide an overview of current advocacy issues which impact services for the homeless. The facilitator will discuss both state and federal policies and legislation that homeless providers/advocates should be addressing. 1:15pm - 2:45pm Workshop Descriptions Session II A. Working with Transgender Youth and Issues: Erik Libey, AIDS Rochester Transgender youth face many challenges that often lead to their being disproportionately represented in the at-risk and homeless youth population. Working with youth of transgender experience in any setting can present unique challenges. This, however, can be extremely true in programs working with street and homeless youth where services are very often gender-specific in nature. This workshop will provide a general overview of the life experience of transgender youth, identify some of the pressing issues that put them at risk, and give providers some specific areas in which to build capacities around working with this under-served population. B. Food Safety: Piera Carubia, Foodlink. This session will provide basic food safety information on the cause and prevention of foodborne diseases in soup kitchens, shelters, home day cares and food pantries. This workshop will focus on increasing staff s knowledge and skills to assist constituents in preparing and offering safe and wholesome food to their clients and constituents.

5 C. Health Issues of the : Sandra Stephens, Unity Healthcare for the. This session will provide an in depth overview of health issues that impact homeless individuals and families. Facilitators will also address innovative models which offer comprehensive healthcare services to the homeless. D. Real Life Ethics and Boundaries for Providers: Betty Mandly, MsEd NCC, Catholic Family Center. This workshop will help participants learn the basic guidelines and standards for workplace ethics and boundaries. This session will explore role clarification and various situations that shelter and residential staff experience. E. Housing Funding II ( Services): Rick Umholtz, OTDA Bureau of Housing Services and Vicki Vigorito, HUD Buffalo. This panel presentation will discuss resources and funding available for support services for housing projects for the homeless. F. Chronically /Mentally Ill: Elizabeth McClam, Lake Shore Behavioral Health. This workshop will focus on the complexities of servicing chronically homeless, mentally ill individuals and provide successful engagement techniques with accessing mainstream resources and permanent housing for this difficult population. 3:00pm - 4:30pm Workshop Description Session III A. Mental Health Crisis Intervention 101: Doug Hurlbut, LCSW, Via Genesee Mental Health. Workshop participants will learn tools and key communication strategies for effective crisis intervention. Participants will also learn how to document key aspects in a crisis situation, as well as referral and linkage suggestions. B. Safety Issues: Rochester Police Department. Many of our communities have experienced an increased level of violence. Now more than ever, it is critical for human service organizations to make safety of staff a top priority. This session will cover common safety issues and concerns related to working with special needs populations. C. Employment Services for the : Father Peter Young, Peter Young Housing, Industries and Treatment. This session will provide an overview of innovative models and best practices for Employment programs for the homeless individuals and special populations. D. Legal Issues Related to ness: Lou Prieto, Monroe County Legal Assistance Corp. individuals and families often face complicated legal issues which can be a barrier for obtaining housing and benefits. This workshop will help participants develop key advocacy skills and learn what legal resources are available to the homeless. E. Maximizing Federal Resources: Partnering with the Regional Interagency Council on ness (ICH): Moderator: Sam Miller, Region 2, US Interagency Council on. Panelists: Everitt Lo, Social Security Administration, Kevin O Hagan, Veterans Administration, Deborah Konopko, US Dept. of Health and Human Services and Reinaldo Rivera, US Dept. Of Justice. Learn more about the services and funding opportunities available through the member agencies of the ICH, including cash benefits, healthcare services, housing and grants for people who are homeless or agencies and organizations who provide supportive services. The ICH is a collaboration of twenty federal agencies responsible for providing Federal leadership for activities to assist homeless families and individuals. F. Essentials of Re-entry for Providers: Ryan Moser, Corporation for Supportive Housing. All over the nation, communities are trying to break the cycle of homelessness and incarceration. Come to this session to explore national reentry trends, unmet housing and service needs, effective targeting, engagement strategies, challenges to service delivery, and successful models for reentry supportive housing.

The full day Symposium fee is $60/or $55/person with 4 or more registered from your agency (registrations and payments must be mailed together). The Housing Options for All, A Strategy to End ness in Rochester/Monroe County breakfast only registration fee will be $10/ person. The registration deadline is Wednesday September 12 th, Registrations and payments received after this date should include a $20 late charge. Registration deadlines are firm. Registrations will not be processed without full payment.
