1 Pride of Rotary T H E M O N T H L Y N E W S L E T T E R O F R O T A R Y D I S T R I C T Issue 2 September, 2008 Every Rotarian an Example to Youth In 1949, the Rotary International Board adopted the slogan Every Rotarian an Example to Youth as an expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which Rotary clubs exist. Serving young people has long been an important part of the Rotary program. September is New Generation Month. It could be called the month of our future because investing in our youth is our future. Rotarians take pride in the fact that we have youth programs for just about every age group with Rotarians serving as active, caring sponsors. Interact is a program for students ages Clubs can be community based or in schools. Interact clubs support many of the same causes that Rotary clubs do. For example, Interactors have helped raise funds for Tsunami victims, organized outings for poor children, and renovated homes in developing countries. Rotaract is a service club for young Koreantown Interactors ham it up at the recent conference. adults ages Rotaract clubs are able to take on more ambitious projects and work independently. They generally focus on professional development, public speaking, and career development. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Association) usually operates as a camp and is sponsored by multiple districts. Youth Exchange is perhaps the most popular program in Rotary. It allows students, age 15-19, to experience another way of life by living abroad with a host family. It began in 1927 in Nice, France. Exchanges in Europe continued until World War II and resumed after the war in The student is often immersed in a new language, new culture, new political system, new currency, and new traditions. In recent years more than 7,000 young people have participated annually. Lifetime friendships are often forged between the two families and helps spread goodwill to other countries. (continued on Page 2)
2 Get Ready for One Special Knight! Paul Harris Celebration The Foundation Celebration Committee members are committed to making this annual event affordable for all Rotarians and families to attend. As a result, we have chosen to host the Foundation Celebration at Medieval Times in Buena Park. It will commence Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 2:30 pm in the afternoon. Tickets are already on sale at the following prices: $60 for each adult $30 for children 12 & under, Interact, and Rotaract Reservations will be on a first come-first served basis, and items for the Silent Auction are now being solicited by Silent Auction Co-Chairs Rica Van Ausdall and Pearl Leeka. This year s silent auction aims to set a fundraising record. Rica and Pearl need your generous donations of unique items valued at $100 or more, but they will gladly accept items from all price points. Contribute with Confidence 100% of the silent auction proceeds go to The Rotary Foundation. Donor and purchaser share Paul Harris credit equally. Any donation sale automatically increases the club s average and helps you meet Governor Chuck s goal of $20 per member per month. Everyone benefits from the auction. A couple of years ago someone donated two first-class airline tickets for travel anywhere in the world. The tickets sold for $12,000 a bargain! The donor and purchaser each received $6,000 Paul Harris Fellow credit. And remember: Our donations are loaned to The Rotary Foundation and then returned to this district to fund only the projects we support. District 5280 Rotaract leaders for Example to Youth (continued from Page 1) We as Rotarians have an opportunity to be role models and mentors for the young people in our communities. One learns to serve by observing others. As our youth grow to become adult leaders, it is hoped that they will achieve that same desire to serve future generations. It is the responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare the New Generation of young people up to the age of 30, by improving their life skills to ensure a better future, while recognizing the diversity of their needs. Children are 25% of population but 100% of our future. Let s Celebrate our Unity and Make Dreams Real for our future leaders. Distri Governor Chuck Anderson Classification C.P.A. Your participation will make this silent auction the best ever. Visit the district website and download the silent auction donor form, fill in the information and fax it to Club Presidents; please write a note to yourself: I will bring auction items to the President s Dinner on September 9, 2008, at the Toyota Car Museum. 2 The success of this event depends on everyone s participation. The more money we raise for The Rotary Foundation, the more we can Make Dreams Real through our club projects. Without the Income there is No Outcome! Erica Wilson, South Bay Rotaract and daughter of Doug Wilson, helping a special needs child at the Rotaract Convention Service Project Sunday, June 15, Shane s Inspiration in Griffith Park.

4 DG Chuck Inducts Annie Konie District Governor Chuck Anderson recently inducted Anne Konie into the Manhattan Beach Club. A Rotarian is a member of the community who exemplifies honesty and ethics, service above self, and purposeful vocation, said Anne s sponsor, Megan Cotugno. Anne is a kind and thoughtful person who can always be counted on to put forth extra effort. When given the opportunity, she has readily and enthusiastically participated in community service projects through her professional industry, such as coordinating arts and crafts days with the Boys and Girls Club. As a licensed interior designer with extensive experience working with lawyers, members of the entertainment industry, and a wide variety of executives, I have witnessed first-hand Anne s dedication to her vocation. District Governor Chuck Anderson inducts Annie Konie into the Manhattan Beach Club. Throughout my years as a Rotaractor, Anne was among the top supporters of my involvement with the Rotary Family. She has been considering membership for quite a while, particularly after seeing the powerful work that Rotary does with youth and on an international level. It is my feeling that Anne has come to a point in her life when she is ready to dedicate her time to a cause larger than herself; it s my hope that Rotary will serve that purpose for Anne.
