7 Lab Time! What is an Enzyme? -A biological molecule (proteins) that act as catalysts and help complex reactions occur everywhere in life What is a catalyst? -A substance that speeds up a reaction -helps reaction occur at a rate that is useful to cells

8 6.2 ENZYME LAB Does SALIVA have an affect on CARBOHYDRATES? -carbohydrates (aka starches)

9 FUNCTION of Carbohydrates provide your body with energy. FOUND: breads, pastas, candy, sodas, fruits. 6.2 ENZYME LAB energy component of diet: -biological compound -contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen [1:2:1] -important source of food and energy USE: -broken down and use as energy [glucose] -STORED in the liver and muscles. -glycogen. -when liver and muscles cells cannot store anymore glycogen -it is turned into fat. -body needs a quick boost of energy -converts glycogen into energy.

10 ENZYME found in saliva AMYLASE 6.2 ENZYME LAB -name describes its function -speeds up the breakdown of AMYLOSE (part in starch) -breaks down the carbohydrate before going into stomach

11 6.2 ENZYME LAB Question: Does SALIVA have an affect on CARBOHYDRATES? BACKGROUND: -6.2 notes (focus: activation energy / catalysts / enzymes) -INDICATORS -benedict's solution -test for the presence sugar. -heated: dark yellow color change indicates presence sugar (+ test). -iodine indicator -tests for the presence of starch. -purple-black color (+ test).
