17 Macromolecules Most are polymers made of repeating monomers Monomers are joined by condensation reactions (dehydration synthesis) = water molecule is removed Ex. carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids

18 Carbohydrates Made of C, H, O Used as main sources of energy for humans Found in fruits, vegetables, grains, pasta, bread, sugar Types Monosaccharides: simple sugars (ex. glucose) Disaccharides: double sugars (ex. sucrose) Polysaccharides: complex carbs (ex. starch, cellulose/fiber)

20 Proteins Made of C,H, O, N and sometimes S and P Used mainly for structure and support, can also be source of energy, enzymes Found in meat and dairy products, soy beans, and peanut butter Monomers are amino acids joined by peptides bonds (condensation reactions)
