Neuroanatomy and Neurocirculation: Evaluation and Treatment Updates Saturday, April 16, :00AM 11:15AM & 1:00PM 5:15PM CEUs:.7 (7 contact hours) Amanda Andy Robinson BA, BS, DPT, NCS, has been a physical therapist since She is currently the Rehabilitation Specialist for Northside Hospital Forsyth, working primarily with inpatients and vestibular outpatients. Due to her husband s military career she has had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including the Neurologic Supervisor for Physical Therapy at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Treatment at this 502 bed, Level III trauma facility included patients from Neurologic ICU, acute care, inpatient rehab and outpatient. She has been an adjunct faculty for Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, Emory University, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Michigan and Central Michigan University. She is a Neurologic Certified Specialist (since 1998), and a Vestibular Certified Specialist (2007) by the APTA. She has had work that she or her colleagues have presented nationally at Combined Sections in 1995, 2000 and She has presented, or has had research presented at Combined Sections for the APTA for research on spinal cord gait, vestibular research and falls in home health care. This will be a multimedia format course to refresh anatomy and the significance of structure and function when working with the neurologically impaired patient, and understand why knowledge of anatomy can make treating patients more effective. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Feel refreshed in their knowledge of neuroanatomy and circulation 2. Evaluate the consequences of a variety of brain trauma 3. Identify considerations for treatment of acute neurological patients 4. Address factors such as monitoring, stimulation, inter and intracranial pressure 5. Feel more confident in treatments with neurological patients
4 Evidence based Radiology for the Shoulder Saturday, April 16, :30AM 10:45AM CEUs:.2 (2 contact hours) Mike Crowell, CPT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, is currently the Chief of Physical Therapy at Tuttle Army Health Clinic, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Life Sciences from the United States Military Academy at West Point and DPT from the U.S. Army Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy. Mike is a board certified specialist in orthopedic physical therapy and certified strength and conditioning specialist. He has several years of outpatient orthopedic and sports experience in military clinics and is an active clinical researcher. This course will review current evidence regarding diagnostic imaging in shoulder. Indications for various imaging studies will be presented along with the accuracy of selected special tests and imaging modalities for various shoulder pathology. Images for selected shoulder pathology will be reviewed, with emphasis on plain radiographs. Multiple case presentations throughout the presentation will highlight the impact of imaging on physical therapy treatment plans. Upon conclusion of this course, participants will have a better understanding of the role of imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder injuries. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Identify the indications for plain radiographs, MRI, MRA, CT, and ultrasound in various shoulder pathology 2. Identify key anatomy on normal shoulder radiographs 3. Recognize common pathology on plain radiographs of the shoulder 4. Understand how imaging can impact the physical therapy treatment plan Ethics & Georgia Jurisprudence for Physical Therapy Practice Saturday, April 16, :00PM 5:15PM CEUs:.4 (4 contact hours) Bruce Greenfield, PT, PhD, OCS, is currently Assistant Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy at Emory University School of Medicine. He has extensive publications in professional ethics based upon his PhD work in patterns of ethical decision making in physical therapists. He is currently chair of PTAG research committee, and member of the Emory University Hospital Ethics Committee. David Taylor, PT, DPT, is adjunct faculty in the Division of Physical Therapy at Emory University School of Medicine. He has practiced physical therapy in Georgia since 1992, in a variety of settings with an emphasis on the geriatric client. Dr. Taylor received his Bachelors, Masters in Physical Therapy, and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees from Emory University and became a board certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy in He currently works in home health for Gentiva. This course is designed to introduce and review basic concepts of professional ethics and the law as they pertain to the practice of physical therapy, especially in the state of Georgia. Case studies, the Georgia Physical Therapy Practice Act, and examples including disciplinary sanctions will be utilized to illustrate concepts presented. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe terminology, concepts, and principles related to the practice of physical therapy ethics and jurisprudence 2. Describe the ethical foundations of the Georgia Physical Therapy Act 3. Discuss common moral issues and dilemmas in physical therapy practice 4. Discuss examples of how cultural and ethnic differences may influence ethical practice 5. Apply ethical decision making principles to solve moral issues and dilemmas 6. Describe the rules and regulations of the Georgia Physical Therapy Practice Act pertaining to referral, delegation and nature and scope of practice 7. Describe the rules and regulations of the Georgia Physical Therapy Practice Act pertaining to licensure renewal and continuing competency
5 The Research Behind Dry Needling: Indications and Outcomes Saturday, April 16, :45AM 11:00AM CEUs:.2 (2 contact hours) Herb Silver, PT, DSc, MBA, OCS, ECS, is the senior clinician for Velocity Spine and Sports Physical Therapy and has practiced since A board certified clinical specialist in orthopedics and electrophysiology, his post graduate sports physical therapy training was in Columbus Georgia at the internationally recognized Hughston Orthopedic Clinical Campus. In Columbus, Dr. Silver was trained in manual therapy with Tom Boers, PT and in EMG with Barry White, PT. His dry needling training occurred over many years including working with David Simons, MD and Yun Tao Ma, PhD. Dr. Silver specializes in the evaluation and treatment of complicated neck and back pain as well as general orthopedic and sports related injuries. Working in Atlanta since 1990, he has developed several outpatient physical therapy practices. Since 1999, he has been president of Velocity Spine & Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Silver has served on faculty at Georgia State University and North Georgia College teaching orthopaedics, physical therapy interventions, electrotherapy and electrophysiology. His postgraduate lecture topics include core stabilization training, orthopedic manual therapy interventions for the neck and low back, dry needling, efficient models of health care delivery and electrophysiology. He is presently an adjunct clinical associate professor at Mercer University and is involved in research with the Mercer Pharmacy department. Daniel Mackie, PT, DPT, is a staff physical therapist who holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Georgia State University. In December 2010, he completed his 1 year residency as part of the inaugural Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program at Mercer University. He currently serves as an adjunct clinical instructor for Mercer University. He has presented lectures to entry level physical therapy students on both applied anatomy and dry needling at Mercer University and Georgia State University, respectively. His training in dry needling includes entry level courses at Georgia State University taught by Dr. Joseph Donnelly, certification from the American Dry Needling Institute and Dr. Yun Tao Ma, as well as completing the Dry needling certification examination offered at Mercer University as part of the Orthopedic Residency Program. This is an introduction to dry needling and acupuncture research literature. It is a broad overview and includes a discussion of the differences in dry needling and acupuncture. A brief historical review of acupuncture and a literature review of both dry needling and related acupuncture research will be followed by how different practitioners have defined their treatment protocols. Case studies will be presented. Various types of dry needling treatment will be discussed and the literature supporting the interventions will be provided. Time will be provided for discussion. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Understand the differences between the knowledge base taught in acupuncture training and the required knowledge base top perform dry needling. 2. Be introduced to the required knowledge based required to practice dry needling 3. Be introduced to the risks associated with dry needling 4. Review the precautions and requirements associated with the handling of needles and precautions for the exposure to blood borne pathogens (all of which physical therapists should be familiar with based on their entry level training). 5. Understand that there is no need to understand or even be familiar with acupuncture to perform dry needling. 6. Be introduced to the acupuncture literature as a source for understanding needling effects independent of traditional acupuncture theory but based on physiological responses. So many resources are available to students, clinicians, and consumers regarding physical therapy. This course aims to help the student and clinician navigate and understand some of the most recent web resources available. Topics discussed during this course will include the following: 1) An explanation of the changes made for the newly designed APTA website slated to be released in March. 2) Presentation about PTNow, the clinician and consumer education portal slated for release from APTA in May of this year. 3) Discussion about other current web resources available that offer study guides, videos, explanations. etc. that are relevant to the profession including PTHaven, Physical Therapy Nation, etc.
