2 P a g e 2 Parkinson en mouvement (PEM) is celebrating it's 10th anniversary this year. Ten years of having people with PD & their caregivers dancing and singing to improve their posture, their gait, their balance AND for the mere fun of it! PEM programs are based on research on the positive effects of music, dance, certain types of movements and voice exercises for people with PD. Tom Lozar, who is in a PEM dance class, gave a vibrant testimony in an article published in The Montreal Gazette this summer. He presents PEM dance classes as a therapy that has done him the greatest good. He regrets that, unlike the many drugs he takes, PEM dance-movement classes are not reimbursed by the RAMQ... After 10 years of contributing to the well-being of people living with PD, PEM hopes the Ministry of Health will some day recognize its value. PEM offers courses in Downtown Montreal, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Rosemont, and the South Shore. It has plans to open up classes in Dorval & Laval. For information: Tania at or Sarah at parkinsonenmouvement@gmail.com Website: parkinsonenmouvement.org Article by Tom Lozar at The Montreal Women's Y has a conference to explain the services provided to seniors by CLSCs and how to access them. Entitled "Navigating the System: Understanding Services for Seniors by the CLSC", the conference is presented by the Y Caregiver Support Program. It is open to all but requires registration. Each participant will receive documentation including relevant resources and information. Conference in English on 12 October 2017; in French on November 28 Registration: , ext. 226 / relativesaidantes@ydesfemmesmtl.org

3 Y e a r 2, n o 1 P a g e 3 For people living East of Saint-Laurent Boulevard in Montreal, Accès Bénévolat-Est de Montréal offers a transport escort service for medical appointments. The accompanist stays with the person throughout their journey (in regular STM or adapted transport) and in the waiting room. The accompanist can also provide transportation. In this case, a fee of $ 0.50 per kilometer applies, beginning & ending at the residence of the escort. To be eligible for this service, the CLSC must validate that the person is low-income, suffers a loss of autonomy and has no one to accompany him to his medical appointments. For information: Claire Parr à Accès Bénévolat ext. 35 / info@accesbenevolat.org Parkinson Quebec produces webinars on topics of interest for people with PD. Those already produced include topics such as empowerment; drugs and their effects; optimization of medication; motivation; travel. The four webinars to be produced this fall will examine labor rights and workers with PD; autonomy and the loss of it; changing sexuality; the latest advances in research. It is possible to listen to the webinars already produced via the U-tube pages of Parkinson Québec. To participate in live webinars in the future, and thus be able to ask questions, simply register and choose if you want to be part of a viewing group or watch from home. The latter option requires only a computer and Internet access. For more information and registration: Claudie Noël, project manager ext. 222 / cnoel@parkinsonquebec.ca) A team from McGill University wants to look at the brain of people with PD as they are walking. They need walkers... This is just one of the many research projects on PD going on in Montreal that require participants with PD. To register with the participant bank : The Réseau Parkinson Québec / Quebec Parkinson Network: -qpn.ca - section for participants

6 P a g e 6 Parkinson's disease presents particular challenges and leads to constant changes in life. As a caregiver, it is good to feel that we are not alone in living this adaptation on a daily basis. That's why PML has created a caregiver support group to break their isolation and share experiences while learning to take care of themselves. The group promotes an approach of mutual support, respect, openness and non-judgment. Location: Centre Évasion, 5701 Décarie blvd, Mtl H3W 3C8 (Côte-Ste- Catherine Metro station) Schedule: One Tuesday per month, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm Moderator: Christianne Bourgie, health professional Spoken language: French Please note: Registration to the group is with PML not the Centre Évasion Another note: Centre Évasion is an NPO specializing in respite services. It can offer a presence at home while the caregiver is attending the group meeting. Please contact the Centre to specify terms and conditions, including costs. Centre Évasion: This fall, PML is offering two lectures on "How to better live with PD", one on appropriate exercises for people with PD, the other on medication. The conferences are in French, and each lasts 90 minutes. They are presented in many Montreal neighbourhoods and in Laval. All the places chosen are accessible to persons with reduced mobility. SCHEDULE OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE CONFERENCES Language: French The PHYSICAL EXERCISE conference presents activities and exercises adapted for people with PD & their caregivers. 8 P a g e 8 PML supports some fitness groups that provide services specifically designed for people with PD. It currently supports Parkinson en mouvement, a Montreal based NPO that has people with PD & their caregivers dancing and singing for 10 years now; as well as Neuromotrix and the kinesiologist Marie-Eve Robillard who offer adapted exercises and boxing lessons. Parkinson en mouvement has courses in Downtown Montreal, Rosemont and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce; Neuromotrix in the East end of Montreal; and Marie-Eve Robillard in Rosemont and Laval. The schedule and the rates of the activities are specified on the website of each organization. The fund is intended to provide financial support for the cost of an exercise program for people with PD aged 50 and under. Please fill in the form for this purpose. You will find it on our website in the Service tab then young diagnosed. Here is the link: Fonds-Aronson.2doc-6.pdf

9 Y e a r 2, n o 1 P a g e 9 The CHUM and MUHC movement disorder clinics serve people with PD and other movement disorders. They are at the forefront of what is done in terms of diagnostic services, evaluation and follow-up. Teams include neurologists, nurses, physiotherapists, speech therapists, social workers and occupational therapists. A doctor's reference is required to be admitted to these clinics. Several Day Centers in the health care system have adapted exercise programs for people with PD. Most require a reference from the local CLSC. Find you CLSC: Parkinson en mouvement (PEM) offers dance-movement and singing lessons designed specifically for people with PD & their caregivers. Courses are offered in Downtown Montreal, Rosemont and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce; hopefully soon in Laval and Dorval. The Cummings Community Center has adapted programs for people with PD including exercises, boxing and Tai Chi. FOR CAREGIVERS, their are several organizations specialized in services for them, One is The Caregiver Network, a distance learning network offering support to caregivers, their loved ones and to the health care professionals who work with them. Several organizations, including Parkinson Québec, have teleconferences on that network. Huddol, for caregivers Huddol is a new social network for caregivers launched by Parkinson Québec last April. Huddol allows a caregiver to share experiences, thoughts and concerns with others going through the same things, interact with professionals, and find valuable information on Parkinson s. Overall, Huddle reduces isolation and fosters support among caregivers. To sign up simply click the link: English community: French community: Choose Parkinson Caregivers. PML is a member of "Parkinson Quebec" which produces information tools to inform about Parkinson's disease and how to live better with it. It also supports research. Together, the two organizations have many tools and experienced resource people to contribute to the well-being of people with PD. Another major organization is the " Parkinson Quebec Network", which brings together researchers in Quebec studying PD, and keeps a registry of people with PD who are willing to participate in research projects.
