1 Letter From the Co-Chairs The planning stages for the 2012 Norlanco Relay For Life has already started. We are looking forward to a new and exciting year. Our theme this year is Reach for the Gold, Find A Cure for Cancer. The goals are set and we need each and every oneʼs help to reach them. Goal: $282,000 Sponsorship: $25,000 Number of Teams: 55 Number of Survivors: 333 Number of Caregivers: 228 On line Goal: $18,000 This year if your team gets a sponsor or an ad for the program 100% of that amount is credited toward your team pledges. This information is found in your 2012 team captain packet which is available at the Rally. If you have any concerns or questions please talk to us at the Rally or contact us at sldavids@ptd.net or debbock@ptd.net. We would like to spot light a survivors or a teams in each newsletter when possible. If you have any interesting stories let us know. Remember if you are just registering a team you do not have to pay a commitment fee. The $100 fee is automatically taken out of your account as you raise money. However, this does not apply to money raised online. Our Kick Off Rally is Tuesday, October 11th at Cocalico High School at 6:00pm. We hope all can attend and we will be providing important information at that time. 4 I have a story to tell... LEE REAM FAMILY BY BETH MC COLLOM Beth has been an active part of our Relay since 2003, co-chair for a number of years and entertainment chair for 2011/2012. In 1967, her brother who was 8 years old was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin s Lymphoma. Through the use of experimental drugs, he was medically cured within four years. He was a 20 year survivor, eventually losing his life, but not from cancer. In April of 2002, her father lost his 18 month battle with esophageal cancer and in January of 2003 their family started a relay team. Four weeks after they joined relay her mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer and 6 weeks later lost her short but courageous battle. The family was now more determined than ever to walk at their first Relay. Their team consists of family members. They are happy that they can help other people in the community fight back against cancer. Relay has given them empowerment to fight back, overcome the feeling of helplessness and help other people in the community. During the Survivor Dinner and Lap they feel such hope and that people rally to survive. They also feel it is an important time to recognize and support the caregivers who play such a vital role in their loved ones cancer journey. Beth stated, As you stand together around the track, it is safe to let your tears fall because you are surrounded by others who are feeling those exact same emotions. It is truly a time of healing. The Lee-Ream Family s major fund raising comes from writing personal letters which tell their story, hosting yard sales, and holding a benefit concert for the first time this year. In closing, Beth said that joining Relay was the best thing she ever did! It is a way to help others, make wonderful friends and help heal yourself.

It is the second leading cause of death among women, breast cancer is also the most commone excluding skin cancers. Fortunately, breast cancer deaths have been decreasing since 1990 as detection and treatment improve, reducing the mortality rate to 3 in 100. #2 Early detection and treatment are keys to breast cancer survival. Women should begin doing monthly self exams at age 20 and ask their doctors to do clinical exams at least every three years. By age 40, women should have annual mammograms and breast exams by a physician, in addition to monthly self exams. #3 Mammography is the most reliable way to detect breast cancer. Most women are diagnosed at early stages. Still, about 25% of breast cancers are first detected through a breast exam, about 35% by mammography and 40% through a combination of both. Performing routine breast self exams is still essential! #4 You can check for possible signs of breast cancer. The three most common symptons are: 1. Changes in the look or feel of the breast 2. Changes in the look or feel of the nipple 3. Nipple discharge #5 Many factors are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. One of the most important factors is aging. The older you get, the greater the risk. At age 20 your risk is just 1 in 1,985. But at age 70, your risk skyrockets to 1 in 24. If you live to 85 years old, your odds increase to 1 in 8. The lifetime risk of breast cancer is 8%, or 1 in 12. Other factors include: First period before age of 12; menopause after 55; excess weight after menopause. First child after 30; no children; take birth control pills for five years or longer. Drinking more than one alcoholic drink per day. History of breast or ovarian cancer. DIET AND EXERCISE DO make a difference! Weight gain after age 18 or after menopause is a risk factor. In turn, losing that added weight may decrease your chances of getting breast cancer.
