4 Last week, Adrian presented a review of a recent book he had read. Of special interest is an article regarding Rotary s involvement with Polio Plus. Santa often gives me books as presents, usually at Christmas, because I am a difficult person for whom to buy gifts and books are an easy option. If I don t like them, she can always read them herself. Until recently I usually fell asleep quite soon after I opened a book. Things changed after I settled into retirement and found more time to devote to reading; I have a lot of catching up to do. Last Christmas I received several books but the one I want to tell you about is The Best Australian Science Writing Santa knows I like reading science and she was right about this book. Many people are turned off by science but before you dismiss this review, please be assured that every article in this book is easy to read and understand. They are all written by distinguished authors - 33 of them - and include the background and clear explanations of the science being discussed. That brings me to the particular story I wish to draw to your attention. It is Amid fear and guns, polio finds a refuge written by Jo Chandler, an award-winning freelance journalist whose work has appeared in Cosmos, Good Weekend, New Scientist and ABC Radio National, among others. She tells the story of the fight to eradicate Polio from the time it was initiated by Rotary to the present. She explains the difficulties faced in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan by the army of people who administer the vaccines; she describes the effects of the conspiracy theories that circulated to cause a setback in the program; she explains the difference between the oral vaccine and the injectable vaccine and why they are used; she illustrates the consequence of anti-vaccination sentiments and complacency towards immunisation and explains the difference between wild polio virus and vaccine derived polio. The article also points out that there have been at least four end-games that have come and passed but there is still hope to achieve zero polio outbreaks by In the three decades that have passed since the fight against polio eradication began, more than $15 billion has been spent on the program of which Rotary raised more than $1 billion. Many other statistics and economic facts are also presented. Amid fear and guns, polio finds a refuge summarises the whole story of the battle against polio and includes all the points that Rotary periodically reminds us of. The book is worth purchasing just for Jo Chandler s article but all the other contributions are equally fascinating and readable. The Best Australian Science Writing 2018 Edited by John Pickrell Available from Collins Booksellers, Sale
