1 Bulletin Monday 27th October 2014 I S S U E N O / 1 5 Meets weekly at Benito s Restaurant 1196 Nepean Highway, Mount Eliza pm for 6.30pm start TOM S TALES Hello Rotarians October is Vocational Service Month It was a very useful and informative Club assembly last week where a lot of matters were discussed in a free and open forum. It was good to hear the views from the members particularly the more experienced Rotarians.. The board will of course take these into account in their deliberations. Thank you to all who spoke, the forum was extremely informative and enlightening. October is Vocational Month The concept of Vocational Service The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to encourage and foster : High ethical standards in business and professions The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations The dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions: Talk about your vocation in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members vocations. Use your professional skills to serve a community. Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your own words and actions. Help a young person achieve his or her career aspirations. Guide and encourage others in their professional development. If you do any of these things, you are performing vocational service. And if vocational service motivates and energizes you, then you re in the right place, because vocational service is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations. 2 LAST MEETING AT BENITO S RESTAURANT This October 24th we also celebrate the 100th Birth Anniversary of Jonas Salk, inventor of the first effective vaccine against Polio. It is said that Jonas Salk refused to patent his invention in order to keep the cost low. Without his discovery the Rotaries Great Polio Plus campaign could never have happened. The Rotary International SHINE ON AWARDS Committee are currently seeking applicants who despite a disability are working for the community. The Shine On Awards are to celebrate and acknowledge these people. Any Rotarian can nominate a person/s. The application is on the District website or contact Lara Barrett M: Applications close on 15 th Dec (although a late entry could be considered). Prior to consideration of some Club matters, Conference 16 Committee Chairman Peter Rawlings made announcements on the Venue and the Conference Chairman / Entertainer. Sergeant David managed to fine : Barrie, Roger Annear (Birdie at Eagle Ridge!), President Tom (wrong Tom s name tag), Geoff Kaye for a speeding fine (quite unjust, only a bit over 100), Jonathan and Birthday people. Adrian Davis won the swindle, but did not WIN. President Tom then introduced an open discussion, with expert advice and info from Rob Davies, on our Options for an improved Microphone and Amplifier. Rob noted that there are changes to the frequency ranges for wireless microphones and he outlined 3 Options: 1 Do Nothing, i.e. continue with present wired system 2 Replace obsolete wireless system, about $500 3 Purchase a new, better system that will be portable and suitable for external functions, i.e provide greater flexibility of use.

3 LAST MEETING AT BENITO S RESTAURANT The overall feeling of the club members was for option 3. Discussion followed concerning how to pay for this option however the Board is the appropriate group to decide this. (See Rob s Handout for details of equipment options). Membership A discussion on the possibility of Family Membership, in which a Partner pays a lower Membership Fee, raising the question Are we changing the Subs or the Membership? PDG Rob indicated that we do not take sufficient advantage of District Programs / Training and that mentoring of new members and early involvement in Club Programs should be our aim. 4 Message From Steve Price Commonwealth Bank I am glad to advise that the Bank will support your Golf Day to the value of $500-. I will liaise with Tom Goulding next week re collecting funds and nominating 2 players. Thank you so very much for the support of Rotary re our VSK BBQ on the day we raised over $600- net profit this year ( only $20- net profit last year) so it was a real winner. In full we raised in excess of $3500- for VSK and were placed 3 rd in Victoria for most funds raised within the Bank per Branch. In ill health for some years John passed away last night. Our thoughts are now with his family and friends at this sad time. Amazing Results- Great effort Rotary Donations In Kind Support - Take a bow Donations In Kind national activity results for last year have just been released and everyone who has been involved deserves a pat on the back. Clubs from all Victorian Districts were involved in some way and many thousands of people now lead better lives because of your efforts. This is a great example of the power of Rotary and what we can achieve if we work together. A special thanks goes to the DIK Inc Clubs who contribute one month s rent. Without their support the Store would not operate and the other Clubs who contribute what they can. We also need to thank PP Laurie Fisher and the volunteer team at DIK for their wonderful contribution. Stores are not in competition and we share the joy that there has been significant growth nationally. This result highlights how cost effective this type of project is with $14 of goods shipped for every $1 invested in the operation. Donations In Kind is an Australian activity and as the figures show we are not exaggerating when we say Victorian Clubs have the best opportunity in the world to help in this way. We did a great job last year and are off to a good start, but as usual the Store is full and there are lots of opportunities available.
