1 B a c k, B a c k t o C u l v er Days Class of 1948 June 2018 L to R: Merrill Crull, Robert Whearley, Herschel Gordon, Frank Schurz, Joe Dearmin Not pictured above: Phil Reilly Dear Classmates, Friends, and Widows: About a month has gone by since our 70 th Class Reunion. It is remarkable how our personalities were unchanged and the conversation was natural. It was a great weekend. Friday morning included the groundbreaking of the new Shack followed by the Head of Schools Luncheon at the White DeVries Rowing Center. After lunch, it was off to the All School Meeting, a weekly meeting run by the students. Culver s 2018 Graduate of the Year, Brian Reichart, whose family has owned and operated Red Gold Tomatoes, Elwood, IN since 1945, was honored. He attributed much of his success to his Culver roots of service, honor and leadership. One of the highlights of each Culver reunion is the re-enactment of the Iron Gate Ceremony. This is done specifically for the 50 th Reunion Class plus anyone who is in attendance for a later reunion who wasn t here for their 50 th and therefore has not had the opportunity to participate in one of these events. Phil Reilly s first stop after arriving on campus just as the weather cleared Saturday afternoon.
2 PAGE 2 The Gordon Family Herschel, Susan, Asia CGA 16, Miles N 83, Diego CMA 20, Eric CMA 85 Friday night s One Culver dinner in the Henderson Ice Arena multi-purpose room was another opportunity to see many returning alums. The food and drinks at the dinner were very well done and all prepared by the Dining Hall staff. Saturday of reunion weekend was full of optional activities which allowed us to engage at a pace each of us can choose. We had our class photo and the highlight of the afternoon was the Alumni and Garrison Parade. Saturday evening, the weekend s festivities were highlighted by a dinner in the Crisp Visual Arts Center. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what a Reunion is all about. It is reliving stories, family events and good times. For those who were here, thank you for making the effort to come. We enjoyed seeing you as always. We have a great Class, and I am proud to be a part of it. Best wishes for continued good health to all. I hope to see everyone for our 75 th if not before. Phil Reilly makes a social call with granddaughter Marisa Gilmore CGA 07 (left), to greet Dorothea Noyes Ragsdale CAG 74, Senior Instructor, World Language and Culture, at Culver, whose father, Nick Noyes was a member of the Class of Daughter Anne CAG 74 is on the right.

Bob Nowalk, (pictured right), Master Instructor, Fine Arts still uses this as a still life subject for students to draw.
4 PAGE 4 THANK YOU The Day of Giving on April 18 th was an incredible success for Culver, with unprecedented support coming from the entire Culver Academies family. The overwhelming response from the Culver community far exceeded expectations, with 2,755 gifts totaling $1.297 million received. Thank you! TAPS Ray Gilbert Hooper M.D., attended CMA for two years in Company A. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, entered eternal rest on April 2, After CMA he graduated from Tulane University and Tulane University School of Medicine. Ray served in the U.S. Coast Guard as the ship's doctor. He went to Corpus Christi in 1962 to enter urology practice. Ray's medical career spanned 45 years. He was a Board Certified Urologist and a member of the Nueces County Medical Society. Ray also was a member of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club. Ray met a Corpus Christi native, Kathryn Olsen, and they married in Together they raised three daughters in a union that lasted 54 years. His love of the outdoors inspired him to become a cattle rancher on the side, a brief pastime. Other interests included fine wines and gourmet cuisine, a lasting influence from his many years living in New Orleans, as well as his extensive travels abroad. Survivors include his wife, Kathy; daughters, Ann, Kathryn, Farley; and many grandchildren. Richard Francis Sharbrough M.D., attended CMA for two years in Troop II. Frank passed away on April 4, He attended Tulane University and graduated medical school at the University of Mississippi. He served his internship at Mercy Hospital Street Clinic in Vicksburg, and there he became interested in anesthesiology. He finished his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He served his two years in the service of his country as chief of anesthesia at the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Jackson, S.C. During this time, he was offered the position of chief of anesthesiology back at Mercy Hospital Street Clinic in Vicksburg. Another of his great loves was golf. He coached the Vicksburg High School golf team and took them to the Big Eight Tournaments. He was also team doctor for the St. Aloysius High School football team for many years. His other hobbies included antiques, painting, taxidermy, collecting civil war artifacts and hunting. He leaves his daughters, Susan 79 and Jacquelyn and their mother, Joan Bailey of Vicksburg. Also, four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He also leaves his brother and sister in law, Dr. Frank Wilson CMA 53 and Lynda Sharbrough of Rochester, Minn., and their family.
