1 Lions Club of Kiama Inc. (District 201N2) Ki-Lines Monthly Newsletter Issue 12: June 2017 President David s Comments Greetings everyone, I hope you ve all had a good month, I know I have. Especially the part where I had a cruise via Brisbane for the State of Origin Before I start, please note that the NEW Secretary is: thekiamalionsecretary@gmail.com The last month was quite busy for our club. It started with our support of the Wings Over Illawarra, which was a very busy activity, as reported in the last Ki-Lines. We also had our van at the monthly markets. We assisted with the Red Shield Appeal, which was very successful. I ll quote an from Graham Packer: Hi After working out that Lions collected $ this year I went back to last year s figures. What a surprise I received. Last year s result was $ an increase this year of $ or an increase of 27.4% what a phenomenal result. This will go a long way to helping those in need in the Illawarra Please pass this onto Dave McLeod and also to all your members who made this possible Thanks once again GP Congratulations and thank you to all who helped out. We had two dinner meetings at the KLC. o At one meeting Graham Packer gave a very heart felt insight into what the Red Shield Appeal moneys are used for by the Salvation Army. o Also at this meeting David Robson explained the set up and uses of Blue Haven. You never know when this information will be useful. Thank you David o The last dinner meeting was to get feedback from our Outward-Bound candidates. Thank you to Hilton for organising Outward Bound and chairing this meeting. The feedback I received was that many positive things come out of this. 100 th Birthday Party: Last Friday we hosted our Municipality s celebration of the Centenary of Lions International. This was well attended with around 150 people attending. Including our Federal and State Members and our Mayor. We 1
2 also had Lions from Shellharbour, Minnamurra and Gerringong clubs. And some of our lions volunteers and all of our Partners. Thank you to Chris and Bobby English and Robby Grant for organising this night. Also, thanks to the folk involved in making all those beautiful cakes and to those who set up the pavilion. The caterers did a great job. Also thanks to Russell Fredericks and David Robson for their large contribution to the night as M.C. and Tech man Whilst there were a few speeches on the night (it s hard to keep a politician quiet) I felt the night was an appropriate celebration of such an important occasion. Life Memberships: At the 100 th party I was very pleased to be able to present 2 Life Memberships. These were to: o Warren weekes, and o Geoff Wilson Coming up: Congratulations to both for this very important recognition of their service to our club over an amazing number of years Our Dinner Meeting on Thursday 8 Jun will have a guest speaker. She is the Chairperson of Interchange Illawarra Inc (including Carers) Susan Wallis and her talk will enlighten us all about what benefits our Carers Respite Cottage will provide and how excited they are for this facility to be available. Changeover Dinner: Probably the highlight of the month will be the 22 June. This will be our Changeover dinner where the New board will be welcomed in. I hope ALL members and their partners will attend as this is a celebration of the year completed and the beginning of our next year. It s a chance for the ladies to get dressed up and for the fellas to try to. Ivan has worked with the Leagues club to provide a nice menu including a 3-course meal and a bottle of red and white wine on each table. We ve kept the cost down as best we could and it is $40 pp. (Please note that the invitation accidentally had the older price of $44) I m sure that incoming President Rob and his programme director Ivan will be finalising the programme for July onwards shortly. As the programme for next year is being looked at it is a good time for any suggestions of guest speakers. Please pass these along to Rob, Ivan, or the secretary. As this is my last Ki-Lines I must thank Wendi for being our Ki-Lines editor this year. Without her sending me the draft document at the beginning of each month I don t think it would ever have been published. The President could not survive without his secretary, and I have had a great one with John Larkins. Without him I, and the club, would not have functioned. Thank you John. There are so many others on the board and within the membership to thank that I will keep their thanks to the changeover night. So, you have to be there. Finally, thank you all for your support and patience with my ways. It has been a pleasure. Regards David 2
