One of the good things is that he will not be required to undergo any treatment over the Christmas break. Congratulations to Jim Tinney. He has left hospital and is well enough to attend his daughter s wedding on the beach at Torquay on Saturday 28 th October. Whilst he has to use a special wheelchair, with balloon types, he does have a grandson to manoeuvre him around. Hopefully this will ease the pressure on Heather too. Enjoy your day Jim and Heather. 4 President s Report: Last week s meeting was a partner s night, expertly chaired by Kevin Francis, at which we had an encouraging attendance by members and partners. Leading Senior Constable Audrey Jones, Senior Constables Stuart Sorrell and Peter Williams who are members of the Maroondah Community Proactive Policing Unit based at Croydon presenting an overview of their key roles within the community and their approach to crime prevention, community safety and youth engagement and how the new Rotary vehicle partnership assists. The vehicle will be loaned by the Rotary Club of Croydon to Victoria Police for a period of 12 months (renewable) for community policing. It is proposed that vehicle will be based at Divisional Offices of Proactive Policing at Croydon. The Rotary funded vehicle demonstrates shared responsibility for community safety, consistent with Victoria Police Strategic Services Delivery (SSD) objectives for more effective working partnerships to be established with other relevant government, non-government and community agencies. The key role of the Proactive Policing unit is to educate, encourage and facilitate the community they serve, to participate in a partnership approach to crime prevention, community safety and youth engagement. The Rotary Club of Croydon has a strong presence in the local community and the partnership with Victoria Police will assist to raise awareness of proactive community campaigns such as the, Look, Lock, Leave vehicle security and Operation Safe Plate, targeted crime prevention through the use of tasking and coordination assessments, and promoting crime prevention through many local Rotary activities. The vehicle will have appropriate Rotary marks (The Rotary Wheel and Club Name prominently displayed on the vehicle). We acknowledge the support provided by Lilydale Mitsubishi for continuing servicing and maintenance of the vehicle. Thanks to Ross Taylor for co-ordinating the raffle based on prizes generously provided by members. A total of $125 was generated for Community funds. The District Vocational Service Seminar was held last Friday night. Kevin Francis represented our Club as a presenter in respect of our Pride of Workmanship Awards. Ian Cumming, Jean Stuart and myself also attended. Kevin emphasized the benefits that flow from the Awards program which is now an essential event in our Club calendar. He highlighted how engagement with outside organizations through Vocational Service quickly builds goodwill, friendships, community participation and membership opportunities. He also pointed out that the program reminds us of our obligations as a Rotary Club, to foster integrity, excellence and high ethical standards in the workplace. Other presenters on the night provided information on Vocational programs in their clubs - Schools Vocational Interviews, Victoria Police Mentoring, Apprentice of the Year and Business Excellence. We also received information on improving our online presence through website management.

5 Thanks to those members who have responded regarding their availability for upcoming events. Pegasus Fundraising BBQ Tuesday 7 November (Cup Day) at Eastfield Park Marlene is putting together the roster. Let her know when you can help if you haven t already done so. Maroondah Festival - Sunday 12 November Names for the roster will include Ian Cumming, Eric Thomas, John Anderson, Bev Stehn, Jean Stuart. We could use a couple more members to shorten the rostered times. Kids Club Family Fun Day Sunday 26 November in Ringwood 3 to 4 members required to assist supervising activities between 3.00 pm and 7.00 pm. We have withdrawn from the BikeIT event on Nov 14 as we would be unable to fulfil the catering expectations. This week we have the final of the Rotary 4-Way Test competition. Marlene Sinclair has been working hard to bring this event to finality. The winner will speak at the 2018 District Conference. Please make sure that you let Jean know if you will be attending or not as we will have many guests coming along to support the speakers and we need to notify Dorset Gardens on numbers. Our thoughts are with John and Pat Gander and David and Declan Sparrow on the passing of Jane after her long illness. A celebration of Jane s life will be held at Yering Meadows Golf Club, Victoria Road, on Thursday 2nd of November commencing at 11 am. Any member wishing to join and support John and Pat and meet her family and friends are most welcome. As per the distributed earlier this week, please indicate by return to me if you will be attending this week. Regards, Stephen Bode President Stephen Bode at the Annual Maroondah Seniors Expo at Karralyka, on the 17 th October 2017.

6 Chairman s Report At our meeting last Tuesday, we had the pleasure of hosting three members of the Proactive Policing Unit - Maroondah Eastern Region Division 2. The key role of this unit is to educate, encourage and facilitate community participation in a partnership approach to crime prevention, community safety and youth engagement. Present were leading Senior Constable Audrey Jones - Crime Prevention Officer, Maroondah, Leading Senior Constable Stuart Sorrell - Youth Resource Officer, Maroondah and Senior Constable Peter Williams - Youth Resource Officer, Maroondah. Fourth member of the unit Senior Constable Johnny Tran was on leave and unable to attend. Johnny is the Multicultural Liaison Officer. All guests, spoke about their daily policing roles in the unit and described their work with families and young individuals who are at risk of entering the criminal justice system, engaging in at risk behaviours, offending, going missing and becoming victims. They also provide ongoing education for young people on such matters as alcohol safety, cyber safety and weapons issues. Their work is centred around safe families and safe, inclusive communities. Our club has many mutual interests and has entered into a Community Partnership with the Proactive Policing Unit and will soon provide a motor vehicle for exclusive use by the unit to carry out their community work. The vehicle will be appropriately marked with the Rotary Club of Croydon name and new image Rotary Logo. All people attending the meeting found our police partners to be extremely committed and engaging people and members were enthusiastic about this natural move forward and the opportunity for a shared responsibility in making Croydon and Maroondah region better and safer places. Kevin Francis

12 Why Am I A Rotarian? By Wilfredo (Fred) Doctor, Rotary Club of Mooloolaba, D9600, Zone 8, Australia I am a Rotarian because in 1968 a friend of mine, David M. Sablan, invited me to be a charter member of the Rotary Club of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. With the exception of David, all the charter members were rookie Rotarians, so at the first few meetings of the provisional Club, it was inculcated upon us that joining Rotary would open opportunities for new friends and fellowship, and opportunities to touch the lives of thousands of people from various parts of the world. Having been a Rotarian for many years now, I have come to realize that Rotary is a tremendous stimulus to selfimprovement. I spend an average of two hours a day reading Rotary material, so I can now have meaningful discussions about Rotary and its programs. I also realize that Rotarians do maintain good relationships with people around them because they are accustomed to applying the Rotary Four-Way Test to their thoughts, words or deeds. Today, when I ponder on why I am a Rotarian, I immediately think of club meetings, fellowship, dinners and lunches, classification talks, fireside chats, mentoring, Pride-of-Workmanship awards, motivational speeches, social events, fundraising, club assemblies, district conferences, The 4-Way Test, The Rotary Foundation of R.I., PolioPlus, RAM, ROMAC, D-I-K, RYPEN, RYLA, NYSF, GSE/VTT, RYE, FAIM/WCS, Ambassadorial Scholars, Peace Fellows, Friendship Exchange, ShelterBoxes, clean water, artificial limbs, operation cleft and many more Rotary programs and projects all over the world. So why am I a Rotarian? I am a Rotarian because I do enjoy being a member of the world's first and most prestigious service organization which, from the night of its founding 106 years ago, enhanced the lives of so many people, including mine. Fred has been an RGHF member since August of Posted 27 March 2011 by Jack Selwa

13 * Made up of men and women across all vocations and cultures, Rotary continues to make an impressive impact. Are you: Keen to help others and want to make a difference? Seeking more meaning and purpose in your life? Looking for ways to help your community? Want to be part of a worldwide network for good? Interested in a Corporate Social Responsibility program in which your company can participate? Volunteering with Rotary can provide you with a great work life balance. It s an opportunity to extend your life experience and business skills, to benefit your local community and the wider world. It provides a bridge from your working and home life to meet and network with other business and community people Ongoing personal development Grow your understanding and knowledge Open to both men and women Make a new extended network of friends Weekly contact opportunities Links to a vast international network Provides a pathway to do good in the world The impact our members make takes shape at our Club meetings and activities. These gatherings allow you to join other passionate, visionary people to discuss and act upon community needs. Rotary Club meetings are also a place to strengthen connections to friends and neighbours and form meaningful relationships that last a lifetime.
