Patricia Trussell Club Sergeant-at-Arms: Steve Garcia & LaSheka Mason Club Meeting Greeters: Ramona and Patricia Message from our Club President What an Optimist week! We had great training at the District meeting the weekend before and returned to have another packed house Club meeting. Our speaker, Catherine Rutledge, is a longtime friend and presented a great introduction to our Pediatric Oncology Project (POP) by discussing her trials with having a son with a youthful brain cancer that took his life. We will be continuing to have speakers throughout the year that help us gain insight into childhood cancer and the challenges of research in this specific area. I have been making some contacts at UNM Hospital Pediatric Cancer group to further our reach for POP. Look forward to a Walk-a-thon in June. Ron Rutledge, Catherine s husband was inducted into the Club in the same meeting. Please take time to meet Ron and get to know him. We look forward to Catherine joining the club in the future. Some of us joined Sunport at Cesar Chavez community Center to plate pies and prep breads for their Thanksgiving dinner. It was a great time and we even got a piece of pie of our choice for our efforts. Sorry if you missed this opportunity to work with fellow Optimists and have fun. Look forward to our Project Share in December to provide more opportunity to help. We need to start collecting toys to help Evening Club with their Christmas project where they provide Christmas to children traveling by bus and train on Christmas eve and Christmas day. I am going to try to have a box starting at the first meeting in December for collection purposes. I look forward to our Board Meeting this week at MCM Elegante, 12 noon. Hope to see you there Wednesday. Fred G. Trussell - President Club Dime-A-Day Members: (8 of 22) David Cozad, Steve Garcia, Ben Hernandez, Ramona Marquez, Fred G. Trussell, Pat Trussell, James E. 2 The Optimist Club of Albuquerque The Optimist Club of Albuquerque The Optimist Club of Albuquerque Last Club Meeting: (Nov. 15) Fred Called the meeting to order a couple of minutes early. Seems to be a trend. Frank gave the invocation and Ron R2. led the Pledge. Fred welcomed everyone and talk briefly about Our Club s busy schedule. He went over the agenda and had our guests introduced. Club Officers were introduced so our guest would know who some of us are. Our speaker was Catherine Rutledge. She gave a hard hitting talk about the impacts to a family when a child has cancer. Fred brought up that we still had some dues to collect. A.C., T.G. and V.S. Bill donated a laptop he was not using to the Club to cover his dues. Both Sergeants-At-Arms were on the excused list, so Jim filled in. Fred asked Jim to talk about the Foundation. We have stagnated at 8 Dime-a-Days. Get your check in. Rita mentioned that it will soon be January and we need school supplies. Thanks Fred and Catherine. Lynne talked about Box Tops. Catherine brought in a large bag of Pull Tabs. Jim and Fred talked about the Childhood Cancer Walk-A-Thon scheduled for June. Fred reviewed the progress of our fundraisers. Jim did a Club Induction Ceremony for Ron Rutledge. Fred reported on the fun and excellent training at the District Meeting in Las Cruces. The Club received certificates for it s bulletin and was 1st for the quarter in A&A and 2nd overall for the year. Rita was the Outstanding Optimist in Zone 3 for the 4th qtr. of last year. We had 3 members attend. Lynne talked about the Ronnie Davison Memorial Dinner, inviting us to help with desserts. Fred mentioned that the Nov. 22 meeting, opened to everyone, would be in the Corral and a Board Meeting. He also talked about the meeting on the 29th. It will be at the Marriott Pyramid in the bar area. Fred talked about Project Share and the great number of Optimist and friends there to feed about 180 people. Took 40 minutes. We had several good jokes and stories and Jim s cartoons were fun. Jim turned out to be the Mystery Greeter but everyone had shaken his hand or hugged him. Fred had a few Closing Comments and re-mentioned the upcoming events. Art led us in the Creed. Riley Rutledge Memorial Dinner: Five members of the Club attended the Riley Rutledge Memorial Dinner at Rudy s on Carlisle Saturday evening. Riley, was the son of our newest member Ron. The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Next Club Meeting: On Wednesday, Nov. 22 We will be at the MCM in the Corral Room of Rustlers Café for a Board Meeting. All Club members and guests are welcome. You have a say in what this Club does. So bring your ideas and join us. Your helping Hands Our next Project Share date is Tuesday, Dec. 12th. Project Share is at St. Martin s rd St. NW. That is between Mountain and Summer on the west side of the street. We need 5 or 7 Optimists. As always we need Drink Mix, Milk, Salad Mix and You! Childhood Cancer: Our Speaker was Catherine Rutledge, who spoke on Childhood Cancer. Catherine and Ron lost their son to brain cancer. Catherine related her and Ron s experiences as their son went through the fight for life. Unfortunately he passed in Catherine related how hard the doctors and nurses worked and the strength of her son with all that he went through. She talked about Childhood Cancer research and how little support it gets compared to adult cancer research. Ron has joined and Catherine will soon join our Club to help us expand our Childhood Cancer programs to raise money for research at John Hopkin s Childhood Cancer Research Center and UNM Pediatric Oncology Research Center. There are far too many families that loose children to various forms of Childhood Cancer. They need our support and researchers need additional dollars to keep the work going so that no child will die from the no. 1 killer of children. They all have a right to live. Attendance at the Nov. 15 mtg. If you were not there, we missed you. In attendance: ( 13 ) 9 members, 11 excused (91%), and 4 guest. At lunch were: Catherine H., Art H., Ron R2., Frank S., Karl S., Fred T., Pat T., Jim W., and Rita W. Excused: David C., Kay F., Steve G., Tom G., Bill G., Ben H., Ramona M., LaSheka M., Ron R1., Olivia S., and Victor S. Our guest were Lynne Martin, Pat s guest, her son, Cody Trussell, Frank s guest Betty Paruta, and our speaker Catherine Rutledge. Club Bulletin: Let me know of upcoming events and speakers. However you can donate a dollar or five or ten or a hundred as often as you like. You can specify that it goes to scholarships or Childhood Cancer. Just reach in your pocket and give to the Foundation. Ronald McDonald House Pull Tabs: Five members of your Club and one from Sunport participated in the Mario s fund raiser for the House last Tuesday. 15% of all meals served at the restaurants went to the local House. Thanks to Catherine for the bag of tabs she brought in. 14,000 tabs so far this year Box Tops for Education: Check the items you buy. There is a growing list of companies that are adding Box Tops to their products. Tear them off and bring them to the meetings. They do make a difference. School Supplies: Were you in a store last week? Was it one that has school supplies? Did you put a package of supplies in your cart? It is that simple! Each time you are out throw in some pencils, or paper, scissor, or Crayons. They add up. Keep a copy of the needed supplies list with you. La Copita Club Nov. 29 Marriott Pyramid North at 12 noon All Optimist welcome Garcia s Kitchen on Central Ave. SW has partnered with the Albuquerque area Clubs for a Fundraiser.
