1 13-D Newsletter Lions District 13 D October 2011 Ohio Lions District 13 D The Evaporator Boilin It Down Every Month Points of Contact: District Governor Dave Gauch (Lion Patti) Parkman Road Garrettsville, OH H: C: pzcdave@cebridge.net 1st VDG John Woodside (Midge) 5166 East Blvd. NW Canton, OH H: john494@neo.rr.com 2nd VDG Tom Zickefoose (Marian) 4300 Canfield Road Canfield, OH H: ziggyice@aol.com CST Paul Metrovich (Lion Linda) Lakeview Circle East Liverpool, OH H: p_metrovich@yahoo.com Deadline for Newsletter Articles is the 20th of the month. Send to: Lion Patti Gauch H: bygoneacres@cebridge.net Knights of the Blind Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness when she attended the International convention at Cedar Point in She also said, It is the caring we want more than money. The gift without the sympathy and the interest of the giver is empty. Did you know that the Youngstown club was instrumental in her being there? She was visiting the Youngstown club and it was suggested that she go to Cedar Point to address the Lions gathered at the convention. If not for the Youngstown Lions, we might not focus on sight. Certainly, our association would be different. The fair season would be different, too. Hands-on service sets us apart from many service-type groups. In late August, the clubs in Zones 2 and 3 worked together with a booth at the Portage County Randolph Fair. It combined many clubs, but also several things. Primarily it is used to recruit new members, but it also provides adult vision screening. To try to keep the parents for several seconds of promoting Lionism, the booth also had a bean bag toss game for the kids. Each year a few potential members are identified and invited to join one of our clubs. And each year a few people are screened who need further assistance. In early September the Canfield Lions had their annual vision screening booth at the Canfield Fair with help from Lions from Austintown, Boardman, Crestwood, Girard, Jackson Township, New Waterford, Niles, Sebring, and Youngstown. The Lions who assisted included the district governor, first vice district governor, and the second vice district governor. Even more notable was the help from a couple of soon-to-be Lions from the soon-to-be chartered Ellsworth/Berlin Center club and the assistance of several non-lion spouses and neighbors. These people together screened 805 area residents with 190 of those being referred for further examination. Portage County Randolph Fair Million Tree Campaign Time Line Canfield Fair Fall Is A Great Season To Plant Balled & Potted Trees. Plants like the cooler temperatures and there s more moisture meaning they are less stressed. When shade trees shed their leaves in the fall their root systems continue to grow well into January. So planting shade trees in October and November gives them a root advantage for vigorous growth the following spring. Applying root stimulator to the root ball at planting time will give trees the proper nutrition. Mulching around newly planted trees will help maintain warmer soil temperature & moisture. Watering during dry periods may be necessary until the ground freezes. Sept. - Oct Establish a club MTC committee/submit the chairperson s name and contact information to District Environmental chairperson, Lion Anthony Nori. Evaluate Community Needs Partner with local municipality/county foresters. Determine the best project for your club & the community. Partner with local organizations: other Lions/Leo clubs, conservation groups, etc. Outline a plan, include tree species, tree sources, permits/permission, materials, budget. Sept. - Nov Order trees for Fall & Spring planting. Sooner is better. Plant potted/balled trees (can plant until the ground freezes). Remember to notify the local media. Report your club s planting success monthly LCI, Lion Anthony and DG Dave. March - April 2012 Plant seedlings & potted & balled trees. Note: Seedlings need care after delivery and should be planted promptly. Ask your supplier for instructions. Don t forget to report your club s event.
2 The Draw-Off from District Governor Dave Gauch The in-flight movie isn t worth watching and there s a whole lot of nothing 30,000 feet below in central Canada. Lion Patti and I are on our way to Anchorage for the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum as I begin writing this month s thoughts. By the time you read this we ll be back home and will have been to another three zone meetings. We enjoy meeting and talking with Lions, be it in our district or clear across the country. Our challenges are similar to other clubs in other districts, but we meet them head on to continue to serve our communities. Of course, as Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, there s no place like home. I have not found better Lions than in 13-D no matter where we travel. I would like to see more Lions in our district, however. Yes, I will be seeing more of you as I travel around, but I d also like to see new members. The reports of recruitment efforts and the extension efforts are encouraging. You know why we need new members and you re trying to get them. A couple of our clubs already have three new members this year and the Youngstown club has announced a major recruitment project. They are treating their recruitment as a project and they have a very motivated membership chairman. Perhaps they will lead the district in new members soon. Will any club challenge them? It s great to see our clubs working together like they do at the fairs and other events in our area. As Henry Ford said, Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success. I d say we have a very successful district. As we continue to work together, both inside and outside our clubs, we will continue to find success and our clubs and district will become stronger. Perhaps, if we focus on a net increase in community service we will also have a net increase in members. As we lose members to death and other reasons we need to look for new members to replace them. Have you asked some to join your club lately? Do you know people who may like to have the opportunities to help others that you have had as a Lion? Please ask them to help; to join your club. Yours in Lionism, DG Dave Greetings from International President Wing-Kun Tam My Fellow Lions, Just two short months ago, I stood on a stage in Seattle, Washington as your new international president, and I asked you to believe in yourselves - to believe in our mission of service to others, and to believe that together we could accomplish anything we set out to accomplish. That included planting 1 million trees. I told you if we can plant a million trees, it will reinforce the limitless potential we all know we have to make a difference as Lions. When I asked "do you believe it" the Lions present that day responded with a resounding "yes." Lions - I am proud to announce that in just the first 60 days, we have surpassed our ambitious goal of planting 1 million trees. As of September 7 th, the Lions of the world have planted over 1.3 million trees!! But we aren't done yet! I believe we can continue the momentum we have already put in motion. Any of us can plant a tree. It's a very visible and hands-on way for each and every Lion to make a difference. It's also a great project to invite your community at-large to join your local Lions club in a collaborative effort. So make tree-planting part of your club or district activities this year, and invite your neighbors, friends and members of the community to join you. What better way to be reminded of our gift of service than to watch the trees you have planted grow year-by -year? We will continue to report the number of trees being planted on this Web site. Tree planting and the care and nurturing of our environment remains a cornerstone of my presidential theme. There is so much more to accomplish. With care, the trees we have already planted, and will continue to plant throughout the year, will grow and benefit generations to come. New and current Lions members, nurtured in a family friendly club atmosphere, will benefit the world immeasurably. Again - thank you and congratulations on surpassing our first goal of planting 1 million trees. Remember that district governors who achieve at least 50 percent participation in the tree planting campaign qualify for the Believers Award. The top 100 clubs in each constitutional area which plant the most trees will also receive a Believers Award. I believe we can attain each and every goal outlined in my presidential theme, Lions - do you believe it? Sincerely, Wing-Kun Tam International President 2
3 From Your First Vice District Governor - FVDG John Woodside The District has just completed our first round of Zone Advisory meetings. These meetings are very important for communicating and sharing ideas between the clubs in each Zone as well as providing an opportunity for District cabinet members to briefly speak to club officers/ members in attendance. Information provided to those attending should be relayed back to individual club members. I would like to thank our District Chairpersons for their dedication in serving our District in this extremely important position. The month of October is typically designated by our Lions organization as the month we focus attention on sight one of our oldest and most important services areas. This is a time to reemphasize our efforts in collecting eyeglasses, organizing vision screenings and providing help to visually impaired individuals in our communities. At our recent Zone meetings each club was given a Financial Update Report on our Melvin Jones District 13D Lions Eye Care Foundation (ECF) and the recipients of this report were urged to share the information provided with their club members. In the ECF recently completed fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, 86% of the District clubs participated in the financial support of the services the ECF provides to the residents of our District. If you participated in a club fund raising project and your club financially supported the ECF, both individually and collectively, you helped individuals in our District with their sight related impairment problems. In doing this you have helped in fulfilling our International President Tam's theme of "I Believe" believing we have the ability to change the world through our organization, as the largest network of caring individuals. This year Lions World Sight Day is October 9, During the past month I have contacted each District Region One Lions Club President to set up an agreeable date for me to make a scheduled visitation to their club. To date, of the twenty-six (26) clubs in Region One, I have scheduled eight (8) visitations. I hope to have all my visitations completed before the end of February, 2012 and am requesting that those clubs that have not provided a date contact me soon. On Saturday, October 8, 2011 our District will be holding a TAIL TWISTER NIGHT at Don Ponchos Restaurant in Alliance, Ohio to benefit our District Convention Fund. If you've never been to a Tail Twister Night I hope you'll consider attending this District social event for a fun evening. Remember, "We Serve" is not only our Motto it is our commitment. Yours in Lionism, FVDG John Fellow Lions, By now, most of you have heard the term "Global Leadership Team" or "GLT." You have probably been asking yourself exactly what this new committee means and what can you expect from it? You will be hearing much more about the program in the weeks ahead, but I thought I would give you a little idea of what GLT is all about. At the Multiple District level there is a Global Leadership Team executive committee which is made up of 5 people: PDG Fred Breyer from District E, PCC Paul Metrovich from District D, PDG Barry Brandt from District F, PDG Jay Carey from District J, and the current CC Ron Keller. Our Mission Statement spells out that our committee is to "facilitate the identification and development of present and future leaders for the clubs and sub districts within Multiple District 13, and by providing them with the necessary training resources and motivation to be successful in this task." The MD-13 Global Leadership Team have identified 5 specific goals and for each of these goals, we have developed an Action Plan which we have already implemented. The Goals for MD13 Global Leadership Team are as follows: 1) The MD Global Leadership Team will identify future, and existing, leaders. 2) The MD GLT will put into place the strategies necessary to develop leadership skills of those newly identified potential leaders and further develop the leadership skills of those currently serving in Lion leadership roles. 3) The MD GLT will be involved in planning and executing a training program for MD13 District officers. 4) The MD GLT considers it essential to develop an open communications process that utilizes all technology available to insure open and two-way communities with all parties involved in the GLT process. 5) The MD GLT We will be involved in developing an Ohio Lions Resource Center for developing leaders and their leadership skills. This center will provide opportunities to develop and promote individual personal growth and leadership excellence. In a nutshell, we have challenged ourselves with identification and development of potential leaders, and of equal importance, we are providing the necessary resources for each step along the way. These steps will benefit all levels of Lionism from our clubs, zones, districts and state. PCC Paul Metrovich Global Leadership Team 3

5 From the desk of Newsletter Editor, Lion Patti Gauch Let s not keep Lions as the best kept secret in our community. Get involved in all aspects - school, church, charitable function, or community activities. Public Relations Chair person, Denise Fitzpatrick, has been to many of your Zone Meetings and always stresses how important it is for Lions activities to be documented. If you don t have a Club photographer, appoint one; if you don t have a Club PR person, appoint one. We ve all heard A picture is worth a thousand words. If your Club is sponsoring an event or putting together food baskets for the needy, take pictures and send an article to the local newspaper. If your town has a weekly paper, send an article telling about your Club and how you help your community. Send Lion Denise the article from the paper so your Club can be entered in the PR Contest. If your Club is having a Charter Night celebration, a Night at the Races, a Christmas party for specialneeds children, send me your flyer. Let the District what your Club is doing for fun and for your community. There may not be room for the entire flyer but the info can be shown in Mark Your Calendar. Yours in Lionism, Lion Patti Lord, quench our hearts of all fires of selfishness, Instruct us in the true meaning of friendship and sharing Omit from our lips any and all profanity of Thy Holy Name, Never to condemn or pass judgment on our fellow man, Inspire us with vision, action, and achievement, Show us the way to a better understanding of service, Make us hold high these principles for which LIONISM stands.
