Page 3 Greetings fellow riders, with the passing of another month we get closer to full time riding season. Some warmer temps have been seen this past month with next month promising to be even better. Please make sure that you are as ready to ride as your bike/trike. March has been a busy month and April promises to be even better. Kicking off this month on April 8th, the 40 to Phoenix ride will be stopping in Leeds. They will visit the Barbers Museum and that evening Chapters T and Y will be hosting a dinner at the Irondale Café. The Café is normally closed for dinner but they have agreed to open up just for our group. Dinner will begin at 6PM. We hope you will make plans to join us there and visit with all the riders. The next day, Saturday the 9th will be our annual District Picnic at the Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury, Al. Hours are from 10AM until 2PM. Admission to the park is free and so is the meal. We will have door prizes, a 50/25/25 and games. While there, take a little extra time to visit the museum just across the road from where we will be. The exhibits change all the time so even if you have been there before there will be new things to see. On Tuesday April 12, Chapter U in Dothan will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary. Details are on the website. We hope everyone can attend. The Georgia District Rally is next up on April 21, 22, 23 in Dalton, Ga. They have over 40 vendors scheduled to be there and are promising a good time for all who attend. We hope to see everyone there. Finally to finish off the month Chapter G will have their annual fun day at the Lowery Community Center. Details are on the website. This is always a fun event so we hope you are making plans to be there. Also, don t forget the Alabama District Rally coming up in May at Lakepoint Lodge in Eufaula. If you need a room you better get it reserved soon, they are going fast. Please get your registration to Sara as soon as possible. Finally, please remember our men and women in uniform and their families as they serve and protect us each and every day. Also remember our first responders and their families as they take care of us as well. We hope to see all of you out on the road, Frank and Linda Teasley
Page 4 SAADD GREETINGS to all! Have you told anyone how much fun you are having with GWRRA lately? Have you been to the Chapter Events and/or District or Region Events recently? Have you let others know what GWRRA is all about and what a close family we all seem to be? You might be surprised to learn that most people, when they hear some of the stories we have to share, will ask all kinds of questions and want to know more. So often they will say Gosh! I wish I could do something like that! Well here we are and so many don t take advantage of many of the opportunities to go and have fun. Please don t be one of them! Don t miss those chances to have fun and new experiences and make new memories. Every day that passes is gone with no way to make it up. By the time you get this newsletter, a few of those big events will be history. Kathy and I attended the Chapter M, 30 th Anniversary Shindig on March 12 th at the Buffet City in Phenix City and it was a blast!!! Those young uns know how to have a party and they did it!!! The F & Z Picnic and fun day and the Florida Region Rally happened too and I know they were also great. I hope you took advantage of them and have some stories to share with us about them. I know the weather didn t cooperate for some of us this time but I know it was good for some so let us know what happened. We d love to hear from you. The 40 to Phoenix Ride is just a few weeks away. It is scheduled to begin April 6 th in Wilmington NC. We have 3 riders from Chapter A that are going to join the group in Leeds AL on the 8 th for the ride to Phoenix AZ. Ed Harris, Sandy Parker and I will join them and we are looking forward to another great experience with them. The AL District Picnic is scheduled for April 9 th at The Confederate Memorial Park again in Marbury AL where we have had it the last few years and it is ALWAYS great! Be sure to come and have more fun than you can stand again! Chapter U has their 25 th Anniversary celebration scheduled for April 12 th at The Golden Coral in Dothan AL and CD Bruce Williamson promises a great time for all. He would love for many of you to show up to share in the fun as I have heard there will be plenty to go around! Bruce has done a great job of staying focused on the good things about GWRRA life, having a lot of fun! Chapter G FUNDAY is Saturday April 30 th at Lowery Community Center / HWY 52 between Samson and Kinston, AL. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. / Registration Fee $12.00 which includes a Delicious Bar B Q Plate Lunch. Join Doyce and Dianne Colvin for a great time there as they are loaded with fun all the time!!! Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all good folks to be part of our great family. Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you. Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime! You deserve it! We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please, stay safe out there. That s the only way we can continue to make it fun. Max & Kathy Tanner & 01 South AL Asst. Dist. Directors Max cell Kathy cell
Page 5 March has come and gone, and now we move into April. This month is the official beginning of our riding season. During March, Chapters Y and F & Z had their Fun Days. Thanks to both of these chapters and their members for organizing these events. Thanks goes out also to all of the members who attended. We hope everyone had a good time. In April there are several events to put on your ride calendar. On Friday, April 8th, the 40 to Phoenix will be in Birmingham. This ride originates in Wilmington NC and ends in Phoenix, AZ at the Home Office. They will be visiting the Barbers Motorsports Museum on Friday. On Friday night, Chapters Y & T will be entertaining them at the Irondale Café. The Café will be open just for this event, and it begins at 5pm. Several riders from Chapter A will be joining this group and riding with them. Anyone who would like to attend will be welcome. April 9th is the Alabama District picnic. It will be at the Confederate Memorial park and will begin at 10am. It is earlier in the year so that it will, hopefully, not be as warm. The Alabama District Rally is in May. This is the time for us as a District to entertain our members from Region A and beyond. Please make plans to attend and get your registrations completed and room reservations made. All information is on the District website, so come on down and have a good time. Thanks for all you do, and if we can help you, please give us a call. Robert & Gail Brown Assistant District Directors
Page 6 In addition to getting chapter members together to discuss possible destinations for chapter rides, we need to be planning for our safety and the safety of the other riders on the road. We can impact our own actions and enhance our chances for survival by taking riding courses, but how do we influence the drivers on the highways so they are aware of our presence and vulnerability? Perhaps by participating in Motorist Awareness events? Talk to other people and explain the dangers present on the nation's highways. In Alabama, we have had the opportunity for the last few years to all participate on one day in May by the chapters setting up a Motorist Awareness display and talking to Motorist stopping at the Alabama Welcome Centers We set up tables with literature or any other displays the chapter might think up, bring coolers full of ice and bottles of water to help get the attention of the motorist passing through, and spend that one day encouraging the motoring public to "Watch out for motorcycles" "Don t text and drive" or other messages the members want to share. We ask only that your chapter report the number of people you talk to during the event. If the public wants to take the literature, by all means give it to them, that is what it is for, but don't make them feel obligated to do so, that is how so much of it ends up in restroom trash receptacles. I have included a map to show the chapters where to set up their MAD Day, the date is 14 May I hope we can have nice weather so we can make more contacts. I would also like to express my appreciation to all of the members who participated last year during this event. Carl Thanks for all you do. Carl & Jan Breeding Alabama District
Page 7 Level III: Safety by Preparedness Level III of the REP is also referred to as Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid or CPR and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times. It would be wonderful if we could achieve the coveted goal of zero accidents, however, we know realistically, accidents will happen. Because of this, it is important to be fully prepared to lend aid to unfortunate accident victims. It is important to always be prepared to save a life. Level III of the Rider Education Program was developed to deal with such circumstances by recognizing and encouraging proper First Aid or CPR training. CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), has been used to save many lives. Being trained to render CPR or First Aid is a tremendous asset to those the REP participant will come in contact with daily. Attendance of a Motorist Awareness Seminar at this level exposes the Member to our program to improve awareness of all road users to the presence of motorcycle, trike, and sidecar enthusiasts. When interfacing with the public in the future, the Level III Rider or Co-Rider can inform them about what we have available to help others share the road with us. GWRRA University Trainers certified in Rider Education are authorized to present Motorist Awareness Seminars. Requirement: Current in Level ll and have taken either First Aid or CPR training No cost to sign up. Patches available at $4.00 per participant Receive: "Certified Tour Rider" or "Certified Co-Rider" patch. Reprinted in part from LTC (USAR Ret) James Clayson Trike your ride! Call David at D&C
