1 Newsletter Autumn 2018 Anniversary Ball Everyone had a wonderful time on Friday 12th October at the Swan Hotel in Wells when we celebrated SWALLOW s 25th Anniversary in style when members, parents, carers and staff went to the ball. See page six for more photos and a full report. Local Running Superstar, John Reynolds, leads the 2019 SWALLOW Bath Half Marathon Team John Reynolds, local long distance runner, has pledged his support for the SWALLOW team in the 2019 Bath Half Marathon on 17th March He is running and will be organising a training programme in the autumn, especially for the event. We need people to join John and run for SWALLOW if you would like to find out more about how you can get one of our guaranteed places, please contact Nicky Tew on nickyt@swallowcharity.org or ring Inside this issue: Café report page 2 Courses page 3 Full report on Ball page 6 Thank yous page 7
2 2 Employment update Feedback from the SWALLOW Community Cafe The café trainees have had a very busy summer in the café - they provided canapés for 60 guests at a pop up café in Radstock Museum for Somer Valley Radio, provided a buffet lunch for the Radstock in Bloom judges, a buffet for South West Foundation and have run two Tasty Treats stalls at Kilmersdon Fun Day and Midsomer Norton Fayre. These events have provided a number of work opportunities for our members who are all keen to work at every opportunity. In August the Wansdyke Play Association and Elaine Bruce, pottery tutor, ran some extremely well attended play sessions and pottery painting sessions in the café. Our trainees thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of helping out with these activities and the café was particularly busy serving children s meals and snacks to parents. We have recently welcomed a new trainee Jess to the team and a social care student Uzair who will be on placement with us until January of next year. Update on Gardening Members of the horticulture group have been out and about helping to maintain gardens of locally elderly people. Here are photos of Kim and Chris S and John and Chris P, working hard. Update from Claire - the Employment Support Co-ordinator In April 12 members took a first aid course which was free to members provided by Working Well, each member received a certificate. New student Uzair in the cafe Bookbarn International has started stocking prints of our Forget-me-not Craft cards and they are selling well.
3 3 Ann and Helen trip to Burnham Our members Dan and Aimee have been going to Somer Valley FM to learn about using the equipment and how to produce radio shows. Kate, the support worker said We are hoping that we can run a SWALLOW regular slot. Aimee has really enjoyed helping me with the technical aspects of the show and Dan has loved doing the presenting and talking on the microphone Here they are with the station manager, Dom Chambers. Cookery at Base House go I like the cooking group. We t it. shopping and cook and then ea I m always full up after it. We had a great time, we enjoyed swimming & playing crazy golf. We liked the bands & danced all night. Debbie goes to Harry Potter Studios I liked seeing the costumes and the masks and the way that I could walk down the streets that are in the films. 5 stars. I recommend everyone to go there. Sarah Goes to Weymouth Godney Gathering A team of members and staff enjoyed a fun afternoon at the Godney Gathering in July, they worked very hard collecting from thousands of people in the audience and all together raised over 1600!! There were lots of coins to count when they got the money back to the office, a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped. On 1st September, Emily, Julie, Leanne and myself got on the train and went to Weymouth for the day. We took our lunch with us and had a drink at Costa and had a look at the shops then walked along by the pavilion and then found a lovely fish and chip shop. We also had a go on the bumper cards and the two pence piece machines. I enjoyed everyone s company. Sarah Radio Training Courses

6 6 Full report on the Ball On 12th October 2018, on a wet and windy night, over 100 people got together at the Swan Hotel in Wells to celebrate 25 years of supporting teenagers and adults with learning disabilities. People sat down to a delicious three course meal which included tomato soup, Chicken with mushroom sauce and cheese cake. Then Bev, SWALLOW s Chief Executive, said a few words and Ann Westcott, who has been a SWALLOW member from the beginning, cut a lovely celebration cake. Then it was dancing and having fund until everyone had to go, just before midnight. Youth Club Meets every Thursday in term time to have fun and experience independence. We had the best night ever.
