1 News August 2017 Editor: Ron Smircich The Power of Service DG Ron Smircich One of the four focus areas of the Lions Club International s strategic five-year plan is to improve membership value and reach new markets. In simple terms, this means the goal is improve retention and recruiting efforts. To reach these goals, LCI plans to develop new products, programs, and innovations that allow more people to engage in service. The first roll out in this strategy is the MyLion application for smart phones. This app can be called the Facebook for Lion s members. All Lions can download this app on their cell phones from the application store available on their smart phone. Type in your membership number and you can start using it. MyLion allows Clubs to manage their own service projects-sign up sheets are no longer necessary. It allows clubs to ask for members from other clubs to volunteer for service projects. It connects you with Lions service projects world-wide to give you ideas for your own clubs. I encourage everyone in the District to download the app and become familiar with it. At the Chicago convention, this year s International President, Naresh Aggarwal, spoke several times to this years District Governors. Each time he spoke of service and emphasized that We Serve is his theme. His theme song is titled We Serve and can be downloaded with him singing it on the LCI website. Consistent with this theme, LCI has added a new important position to the Club Support Team, now called the Global Action Team. This is the Global Service Team Leader, which PZC Patti Lovell has graciously volunteered to assume this year. Please work with Patti as she contacts you for ideas and suggestions concerning service projects in your community. I encourage each club to plan one hands on community service project this year and invite non-lions to participate. This might not only bring you new members, but will also extend the knowledge in the community of your club s activities. I know that several clubs do this already. This month I begin my official club visits and look forward to talking to all our Lions members.
2 Sharon Sikes 1 st Vice District Governor August 2017 GREAT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY - WE NEED YOUR HELP This volunteer leader opportunity is new this year and was sent to us from LCIF by reaching down to the Club level and creating an elected club position voted on by your Club Board of Directors called LCIF CLUB COORDINATOR. 5 DISTRICT 19 C MEMBERSHIP PZC Bob Johnson, District C Membership Chairperson As our new Lions year has begun let us stay cognizant of membership growth. We in District C have had three plus growth years in a row; let s make it four. Governor Ron is looking for a plus 28. That will consist of a minimum of 180 new Lions added to established clubs, add one new club of 20 and no more than 172 drops. Do the math, a plus 28. Our district has done a great job in membership; let s keep that attitude strong. Governor Ron is planning on awarding 5 Centennial coins, at the District C annual convention and they will be awarded to the 5 individual Lions who bring the most members in New members must be added to MyLCI by April 15, 2018 If you don t have a coin, here is a good way to earn one. The District is planning on continuing putting emphasis on our membership retention plan, THE LI- ON S JOURNEY. There are three parts to the Journey: GROWTH, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP. When you finish any part of this program, please a copy of your form to three Lions, Governor Ron Smircich, Retention chair Ida Malone and Membership chair Bob Johnson. The plan is to have the Governor print all certificates and in most situations they will be awarded by one of three governors or by the membership or retention chairs. This will occur, in most situations, at a zone meeting or a club meeting. Go to work. Earn a Commemorative Centennial Coin!! The top five Lions who recruit new members in District C will receive a commemorative coin at the annual convention. The new members must be entered into MyLCI by April 15, 2018.

10 A letter from a Lion s Foreign Exchange Student I always thought that change is the base of personal growth, living new experiences and new emotions is what life consists of. It was not so long ago that this became a reality for me. I came to Washington without knowing that I would acquire many marvelous experiences and knowledge, and most of all, the many wonderful people I would meet here. I spent one week being part of Camp Leo for Children with Diabetes, undoubtedly one of the best experiences in my life. I was able to learn a lot about diabetes and also put that knowledge in practice the whole time by testing blood sugars each night. Bonding with these kids was incredible, all of them are great warriors whose strength I will always admire, I learned a lot about them. On the other hand, bonding with the Weatherly's in my second week in Washington was the nicest thing that could ever happen to me. Lions Jan and Art are the most magnificent people I've met. They taught me many things and made me feel like home. Their hospitality touched my heart and I am very grateful for all they did for me. Now that this experience is over, I feel like I have become a better person. There was a change in me, a deep change that I cannot explain with words but only feel it. Now I feel more confident of myself and my skills. I feel full of strength and life but most of all I feel that after this experience I will begin to live with more passion and self love. I want to thank Lion's Club for giving me this opportunity, my family for supporting me and believing in me, and Jan and Gracias, Luisa Ayala Garza Upcoming District Events Centennial Celebration-Aug 12 (see flyer) C5 DGAM Aug 15 American Legion #2 (see flyer) Cabinet Meeting Aug 21 Hawks Prairie Restaurant Lacey 6PM

12 Focus on Service Kent Lions Club For the Kent Lions, our Kent Cornucopia Days is a big way that We Serve our community. The Kent Lions success with Kent Cornucopia Days began when the Kent Lions took over a failing summer community street fair event called Ezra Meeker Days held in a parking lot in Kent in Through the years, the Lions chose to change the name to Kent Cornucopia Days. Over the past 46 years and through lots and lots of effort, Kent Lions grew and expanded, and grew and expanded the three-day-long, July street fair to now encompass 12 city blocks and more than 300 street vendors and sponsors in downtown Kent. The food court, alone, has 30 food vendor openings. In addition, there is a beer garden open in the afternoons and evenings. Plus, there is continuous live entertainment on two separate stages placed at locations within the street fair area. The Cornucopia Days street fair is clearly one of Western Washington s largest street fairs and is at the heart of the summer community celebration in Kent. But, the massive street fair is only the beginning. On Sunday afternoon, the final day of the festival is capped off with 90-minute parade through downtown streets with 60 to 80 parade entries each year. As the parade passes through downtown Kent, thousands of onlookers line the sides of the streets. Local TV covers the entire event as the Miss Cornucopia Float, bands, and drill teams, classic cars and local political candidates march by. Each year, the Kent Lions Foundation chooses one outstanding young woman as Miss Cornucopia, from the community, based on scholarship and citizenship. She is awarded a scholarship to a college of her choice. This year s winner claimed a $3000 scholarship to an aeronautical university. In cooperation with the city parks department and local sports leagues, a 5K run/walk and a soccer tournament have been brought under the Cornucopia Days umbrella of events. Hundreds of people participate in these athletic activities. In 2001, Cornucopia Days had its first regional dragon boat race. Annually, 40 racing teams from as far as British Columbia and Oregon compete in a day-long tournament-style event at Lake Meridian in Kent. Check the website In addition, a new organization, the Kent Dragon Boat Association with 60 members and two paddling teams came together from the popularity of this new sport. Several Kent Lions members are also members of KDBA. Through a lot of effort, the Kent Lions club now successfully own a premier community event that is ranked among Western Washington s top community entertainment venues. Reliable estimates put annual attendance of 150,000 to 200,000. Regional promoters have packaged Kent Cornucopia Days along with the Bite of Seattle, Taste of Tacoma, and Issaquah Salmon Days and successfully sold promotional rights to big-name corporate sponsors such as Comcast, Alaska Airlines, and Coca Cola. This year, thirty such sponsors paid for promotional and advertising rights to Kent Cornucopia Days.

17 District Training We encourage all officers and all Lions to participate in the District training program. Even if you are not new to your position, there will be something new for you. We hold both classroom and webinar training. The course material is the same for both types. The webinar training is interactive and is held with Go to Meeting software which you can download free onto your computer. Please take a look at the District training schedule on the next pages. You will notice that we hold training classes for President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership Director. Club Vice Presidents are encouraged to attend the President s training also. The club president should attend all other officer training sessions also. Attending these will give you a great insight as to how you can assist your leadership team to perform to its maximum. Please notice on the training schedule that District training includes more than officer training. We hold new Lion orientation sessions as webinars. New members should be strongly encouraged to log on to these within the first month of becoming a new Lion. We hold Board of Director classes on line. You will learn about your responsibilities and liabilities as a member of your club board. We also have classes on Ethics in Lionism The LCI Forward strategic plan calls for the introduction of new and exciting technology for Lions. The first roll out of new technology is the a software app for your smartphone. Named MyLion, this software presents a revolutionary change in the way Lions communicate with each other. With this app you can communicate with Lions around the world, learn about club service projects both near you and far away, and gives your own club distinct advantages in managing your service projects. This app is available to download from the LCI website on July 2. There are two MyLion classes scheduled before the end of this calendar year. All District training is open to all Lions Please review our training schedule on the next pages
