Lion s Mane to the Tails Keeping District 14-L Lions Clubs Informed Number 33 April, 2017 Website: Facebook District Governors Message Greetings District Lions: I am beginning to feel like a race car driver with about ¼ of my laps to drive. Some days I feel like I have a good chance to win while others I feel like I am falling to rear of the pack. As we head into April there are many things going on in the Lions world. First and foremost is our District Convention April 8 th, at Juniata Valley High School. Have you registered yet? If not by the time you receive this letter you are on the wire. Call me directly at to register. Secondly we have all club elections to complete. Don t forget to file your PU-101 on line. For those that file by mail, be sure to send copies to your 1st VDG Jim. Then we have our last District Cabinet meeting on May 7 th, State Convention May 18 th 21 st and all of the club service projects that get started up in the spring. Sound like a lot? It is. But that is what we as Lions do, keep very busy. I hate to say but our membership is continuing to drop. As of this writing we are down 22 for the year. Can you help us? If one half of our clubs brought in a new member now we would be even. Of course we have those member drops. Clubs, please before dropping a member make sure that you have exhausted all avenues to keep them before hitting that send button to delete them. It is so hard to get the new member; we want to be sure that all efforts are made to keep them on. Need some help! Contact PDG Anna Clark the District Global membership Coordinator. She will be happy to meet with you to develop a plan. As we approach the time for elections and new club officers, be on the lookout for the dates for club officer training. PDG Fred McKinley will have those available soon. Please encourage your new (and current) club officers to attend. Bring back some new tools and ways to provide improved leadership at your club. As for District Leadership, we still are looking for a 1 st and 2 nd VDG to nominate for office. Our team has been talking with many and has found a few with some interest, just not ready at this time. Lions that have served as a Club President and Zone Chair are exactly who we are looking to step up into a leadership position for the District. Believe me it is challenging but also rewarding. I have met so many excellent Lions over the past year. Many who have what it takes to move up. Please give it serious consideration. Call myself or 1 st VDG Jim Foreso and we will come out to meet with you. To end on a very positive note, I want to thank the Zone Chairs for working to put together a 1 st ever Melvin Jones event for our District. This will be an evening for Melvin Jones Fellows to gather, eat, and enjoy the fellowship of their peers. May 6 th at Stone Creek Valley, 6 PM. If you are a Melvin Jones fellow and did not receive a letter or invitation, please contact Lion Sandi Dysard at I am looking forward to seeing many of our Lions at the District Convention on April 8 th. Please help me to reach my goal of 125 Lions registered to attend. Until next month, keep serving, keep busy and stay healthy. My contact information is: DG Larry Edwards, 1639 Timberline Drive, Altoona PA 16601, HP , CP , cousin10@aol.com. Yours in Lionism, District Governor Larry

1st Vice District Governor James T. Foreso Three months and counting! What does that mean? I have three months left in my position as 1 st Vice District Governor before becoming your District Governor. I only have three months left to complete District Governor Larry s goals and put in place a team to move us forward. There are many opportunities still available for the upcoming Lion year for you to make an impact both within your club and district. Volunteering to take a club officer role or even a step into the district level as a Zone Chairman or Vice District Governor is both needed and rewarding. Both Larry and I are striving to get full teams in place this year to transition our district through the next several years. By having multi-level position filled, new volunteers and officers can serve and receive sufficient training before having to take on the responsibilities of a new position. Please remember there is training for all leadership positions within Lions Club International from club level through International Officers. We are specifically looking for Zone Chair positions in Region 3, Zone A (Huntingdon) and Region 5, Zone A (Blair Mills, Fort Shirley, Orbisonia and Shade Gap). Any help in recruiting a volunteer from the local clubs would be appreciated. April 8 th is coming fast and is the date of our annual district convention to be held at Juniata Valley High School. This year we have an entire day planned including meals, a service project and informational sessions. The district convention is a wonderful way to meet other Lions and share ideas to improve not only your club and district but Lions Club International. If you have not already signed up to attend the district convention, it is not too late! Contact District Governor Larry, myself or your club secretary for information on attending. I want to take a moment to thank all of the clubs I have had the pleasure of visiting with this year. Your positive reception, kindness and hospitality are extremely appreciated. I am looking forward to having the chance to visit with all of you during the next year. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with or any information you are in need of, that I can provide. Finally, we only have a few short months to help District Governor Larry complete his goals for the year. His primary goal left is to have an increase in membership over last year. We are close to achieving this. If each current members would step out and invite only one non-member to come to a meeting and learn more about Lions Club International, I think we could achieve this goal before the end of three months. As always, your thoughts and prayers for not just myself but for all of our leaders is always appreciated. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything I can help with. 4 DIABETES AWARENESS: HEART DISEASE KAY SHATZER, DIABETES AWARENESS CHAIRPERSON People living with diabetes strive to control their blood glucose levels daily with the hope to feel more energy, positive emotions and to prevent long term complications that years of high blood glucose can cause in the body. This month s focus will be on cardiovascular disease which includes heart attacks stroke and decreased circulation to the legs, feet and kidneys. Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in the person living with diabetes and thus very important to prevent. The following conditions increase people living with diabetes risk of cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, lack of physical activity, sitting for long periods of time, smoking, obesity and poor -ly controlled diabetes. These conditions cause increased plaque to build up in arteries resulting in narrowing of the vessel and increased risk for clotting and/or lack of blood flow to the brain, heart tissue, legs and feet, or kidneys. This lack of blood flow can produce heart attack, stroke, increase risk of amputation or kidney failure. Individuals with insulin resistance or diabetes in combination with one or more of these risk factors are at even greater risk of heart disease or stroke. However, by managing their risk factors, patients with diabetes may avoid or delay the development of heart and blood vessel disease sores that don t heal quickly and /or loss of hair on the legs may be another sign of decreased circulation. High blood pressure can sometimes be caused by a blockage in the renal (kidney) arteries. If you have diabetes and are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you should mention them to your doctor. If you expatience sudden onset chest pain or discomfort, jaw pain that is accompanied by nausea, shortness of breath and sweating, sudden headache with nosebleed, sudden onset of weakness or tingling on one side of the body only, difficulty forming words or slurred speech, you should seek medical attention immediately. People who have had diabetes for over 10 years should talk to their health care provider about the need for preventative or screening cardiovascular testing procedures. These procedars include cardiac stress tests, doppler studies or ultrasounds to check circulation along with some others. Insurance policies do not al-ways cover expensive testing as a screening tool unless symptoms are present; but intense cardiovascular screening is often done in the community at churches, wellness centers or by heart hospitals for a reasonable price. People with diabetes should discuss their risk factors for cardiovascular disease with their health care team at every visit. People living with diabetes should be aware that often the normal symptoms of heart attack and stroke are absent. Many times increasing short-ness of breath that comes on gradually and gets increasingly worse in a few weeks is an early symptom of heart disease for a person with diabetes. Stoke symptoms often include numbness and tingling to one side of the body, awakening with a crooked face (asymmetrical smile or one eye closed and one eye open), difficulty finding words or slurred speech. Cramps in legs while walking that improve at rest, are a sign of de-creased circulation to your legs and feet. Also

Western PA Lions Hearing Foundation On January 29 th District 14-L was approved to be included as a service area for The Western Pennsylvania Lions Hearing Foundation. The plan is to have a satellite facility in the Altoona area by summer of Right now, the problem has been in finding a Doctor who is affiliated with UPMC.If we get referral s for an aid and the Satellite facility is not up and running, we would refer them to one of the other facilities, Also at this meeting Lion Susan Edwards and I were approved and accepted as Board members to serve a two year term. WPLHF meets at UPMC in Pittsburgh where much research is done to improve hearing and finding new methods of restoring hearing loss. Doctors in training do a lot of their practicing here before actually working on a patient. The function of the WPLHF is to provide hearing aids to those who otherwise could not afford them. They must meet guide lines to be accepted into the program. The recipient must meet the 200% of poverty status and have less than 20 decibels of hearing. There is a charge of $200 which can be met by the patient or they can get help from a Lions Club or other groups. Approximately 100 aids are distributed a year. With our acceptance into the Foundation we would need to have in our District budget a line items for the Foundation. I would think something along the line of $2.50 or so would be appropriate. If anyone has used hearing aids, please see that Lion Susan Edwards or I get them. They can be used by the Doctors at UPMC in their studies and also in an emergency used by a patient until theirs arrive. Most importantly, if you know of someone who needs an aid and qualifies for one, please have them contact Lion Susan Edwards or me, Dee Hite.

Hello Lions: Well here we go into April and all our clubs will be electing their new officers. So it is time to train our Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers in their new roles as officers of your club. The Leadership team is ready to set up in your zones or Regions the training these officers will need to lead their clubs. I will be contacting the Zone Chairs in each region to set up a date and place to do the training in May or June. It can be done in about 2 or 3 hours. It would be nice to have the training in a location that has Wi-Fi, but it is not a necessity. All Club Secretaries please send me a copy of your new officers as soon as they are elected I would appreciate it. So all Zone Chairs start thinking about when and where, I will be contacting you in late April (after Easter). Thank Global Leadership Team GRANT MONEY AVAILABLE Does your club need money for a club project? The Lions of Pa. Foundation has approximately $70,000 available in grants funds. The Pa Foundation provides matching grant money for eligible projects. The Foundation provides for two types of grants, Humanitarian Service and Vocational Assistance. Humanitarian Service Grants will be issued for permanent communal programs or institutes, which satisfy humanitarian needs in harmony with the objectives of Lionism. Vocational Assistance Grants may be used for projects meeting a broad range of educational and training projects that provide a means for sensory impaired people to become self-supporting or to improve their economic and or social well-being. LPOF sponsors activities that have further reconstruction efforts, and that provide long term benefits to as many sensory people as possible. Among proposed reconstruction projects, higher priority is given to those proposing the creation or reconstruction of new public facilities and services that benefit the sensory impaired. Review their website at WWW. Palions.org, search for state projects, Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation, for grant information and request form. For further information contact PDG Dennis Clark.

It is time to make your reservations for this year s convention to be held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort near Donegal, Pennsylvania. We have a wonderful convention planned for you. Consequently, we will be collecting used eyeglasses, hearing aids, and non-perishable food items for the benefit of the Westmoreland County Food Bank. Likewise, President Corlew will plant a tree, and everyone who attends the International Banquet will receive a special environmental gift. As we celebrate 100 years of Lions Clubs International, our seminar and meal speakers: Kevin Hartigan from the Perkins School in Boston, Lion Jackie Christensen of Ohio Lions District 13-F will portray Helen Keller, and Lion Kenneth Hammontree, also of Ohio, will depict our founder Melvin Jones, thus representing the history of Lionism. The highlight of the convention will be the Centennial Service project on Saturday afternoon, sponsored by our Pennsylvania Counsellors Association. Our goal is to package 30,000 meal packets for distribution to the hungry across the world. These 30,000 meal packets are designed to have 6 servings per packet, thus, providing 180,000 total meals. This project is divided into 4 sessions: setup and preparation, followed by three 1 hour packing sessions. The first packing session is reserved for our Leos, their advisors, and President Bob and Lion Dianne. Please sign up for a time slot to work. It is not hard work, but it is a lot of fun. Please check out the convention Facebook page: MD 14 PA Lions State Convention which has a video showing the project. It s not too late to submit your club s $15 donation to the PA Counsellors to help fund this project and future feeding programs.
