1 Lion Amy Higgins, Editor DISTRICT 14 L LIONS NEWS Final Message from District Governor Bill Higgins July 2013 Thank you to the Lions of 14L for making the Lions year a resounding success! Not only has this past year been a memorable experience in the context of my Lions membership, but, as I have stated on many prior occasions, it has been a year that my family and I will treasure for a lifetime. While this will be my very last message to you as District Governor, you have not heard the last from me. District Governor-Elect Gerald Chapman has asked me to serve as Global Membership Chair for 14L, and I hope to build on our membership success by stringing together multiple years of positive net growth. While I will issue a final report on our Goals in next month s newsletter, I am proud to report that we finished the year with a net gain of +29 new Lions. This is incredible considering the fact that 14L has not seen positive net growth in over 15 years, and where the vast majority of clubs in Pennsylvania (and throughout the United States) reported net losses this year. Thank you for your efforts in recruiting new Lions! On another note, during the summer months, I am sure most of you will be traveling, and during your travels you will undoubtedly pass through communities where the local Lions Club may be holding a Chicken BBQ, Pancake Breakfast, Spaghetti Dinner, or setting up their food cart at a local carnival. I strongly urge you to support those endeavors. Stop by, say hello, and let them know that you are a proud Lion and proud to support their effort. Amy and I make a special effort to support Lions activities where we travel. We proudly avoid McDonalds, Burger King, or any other commercial eatery for the foods prepared by the Worlds Largest Service Organization. We are always looking for that easily recognized Lions Emblem wherever we go. In closing, I look forward to serving with you in Lionism for many years to come, and if I can ever be of assistance to any of you, please do not hesitate to contact me. I consider every single Lion in 14L to be a member of my extended family. In the meantime, never forget our simple motto: WE SERVE! - District Governor Bill Higgins District Governor Bill Higgins had the pleasure of installing new officers into the Blairs Mills Lions Club

2 Message from DGE Gerald Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos, The New Lions Year is about to begin. I had no idea I would be in this position last year at this time. One of the reasons for being a Lion is the opportunity to help those who had no idea they would need help. There are two components of helping people. One is the resources provided by the Lions, and the other component is giving the person(s) the knowledge that people care about them. Look around your communities for people who like to help others. Convince them that efforts can be multiplied through the Lions. There are many events coming up in District 14L that demonstrate people working together: * The District 14L Popeye Fleck Fishing Derby on July 13. Taking care of supplies and awards. Helping the campers that may have never touched bait or fish. * Cooking the chicken for the Lions Appreciation Day on July 21. Joins us at Beacon Lodge about 6:30 am to start preparing chicken for the racks. Come later and help serve the chicken. This is a District 14L project, and we have a reputation of serving good chicken. Come out and help. * The Pre-Cabinet Meeting and Banner Exchange are on July 14 at Shade Gap Fireman's Auxiliary Building. All Lions, Lioness, and Leos along with guests are welcome. I will have the International President s message to share when I return from the International Convention in Hamburg, Germany. No matter what the message may be, we have to start with our club activities to make a difference for those who need community service. Until we return. Yours in Lionism DGE Gerald Chapman FAST FACTS When inviting new members to join your club, here are a few fast facts about Lions Clubs International for you to share: Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization. We have 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide. Lions are everywhere. We're men and women who are active in community projects in more than 207 countries and geographic areas. Lions have a dynamic history. Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness it's part of our history as well as our work today. But we also perform volunteer work for many different kinds of community projects including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled. Message from 2 nd VDG Anna Dear Lions, Lioness, and Leos: As we are now into our summer months a lot of our lions clubs take this time off and have no meetings. It is still a good time to keep your club members active with a club picnic, baseball game, or some other group activity. We still need to be active in our district activities such as Popeye fleck, Exchange of Banner, and the Governors day at the Beacon Lodge. Your help is needed in the cooking and serving of this chicken dinner. This is a good time for the new club officers to take a look at your club needs and see what your club can do in the coming year for your community. Get some new ideas with new input from your new leaders, officers, and members. Just because your club takes a summer break, you cannot forget to still ask new people to become members. It is never too late to FOLLOW YOUR DREAM through our motto WE SERVE. Yours in Lionism, Anna Clark 2
