1 Lion s Mane to the Tails Keeping District 14-L Lions Clubs Informed Number 42 March, 2018 Website: Facebook District Governors Message I hope we are ready to stop shoveling snow and enjoy not wearing all those heavy coats and gloves. Look out April here we come. It is going to be a very busy month. We start off the month with our District 14-L convention. This year we will be having the convention at Juniata Valley High School on Saturday, April 7. We will be having a breakfast of donuts and coffee, two seminars and lunch. After lunch there will be two more interesting seminars. Nominations and elections will be held to elect the new 1 st Vice District Governor and our next District Governor, Leanna Calhoun. After the elections our banquet will be held. PID Joe Gaffigan from Silver Springs, Maryland, will be the keynote speaker. He was elected to the International Family from 2004 to There will be awards honoring a three-time war veteran and others. There will also be a basket raffle. The service project in the afternoon will be to make 100 Jared Boxes to be given to local hospitals. These boxes, filled with toys and games, are given to children to occupy them during their time in the hospital. The cost for the attending the convention, including meals, will be only $ Try to have members of your club attend. One year ago, I was counting the days, waiting to be elected as your governor. Now I am looking at the calendar and wondering where the last nine months went and the speed at which the time flew by. Although it has been a lot of work it has also been a lot of fun and very educational. I am looking forward to the events that will occur during the next three months. We are also making plans for the State Council Convention to take place in State College on May 17 to May 20. Please look for the state convention information elsewhere in this newsletter. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at both the District and State conventions. As always, thank you for your thoughts and prayers not just for myself and my family but for all of our leaders. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything I can help you with. Yours in Lionism, Jim Foreso James T. Foreso, DG

2 Message from 1st Vice District Governor Leanna Calhoun I want to give a special THANK YOU to all of the clubs and Lions who have given me an ad for my Directory. Also if anyone else has an ad, you still have some time to do so. The ads are very much appreciated. Just a reminder, I still need to get your club secretary, president's names, addresses and telephone numbers for the Directory. Thank you for the clubs who have already sent them to me. We are a service club not only in our community but global. LCIF needs all clubs to help them. There are many ways to give to LCIF. The monies go to the world in need. We have had so many disasters in the world and LCIF contributes to these causes. They are asking for our help. I know it is hard to fine presidents, secretaries for club offices. I like to share a quote from Helen Keller. I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something, I will not refuse to do the something I can do. Even though we are so busy in our life, we all have talents and need to use them or they can be taken away from us. I am asking all to Serve in whatever God given talent you may have. It will make our world a better place to live in. Yours in Lions Leanna Calhoun 1st Vice District Governor

5 Burnham Lions to Continue the work of longtime Lion Don Baker! The Burnham Lions Board of Directors at there March Board meeting renamed their eyeglass recycling program the Lion Don Baker Memorial Eyeglass recycling Program In honor of their deceased lion who had headed up this program for what seems to have been a lifetime. Lion Don had sent over 92,000 pairs of eyeglasses to the recycling centers. The entire club will assist with the project with Lion Ned Kauffman heading up the program. We are asking all of the clubs in District 14-L who have assisted in the past to continue to contact members of the club and we will make arrangement to get the eyeglasses fro your club. Is there a Lion in you club that you would like to recognize for their service? The Lion of Pa. fellowship program has the way to do this. There is a program to recognize a fellow Lion, Leo or friend of Lionism for their years of service to your club. This award is secured by a donation of $ to the Pa. Foundation, or it can be given as an award to an individual who has performed above and beyond the cause for Lionism. This will provide the Lion or individual with a fellowship pin and beautiful pinnacle, which will have the person s name and year donated. You can complete the application on line or contact PDG Dennis Clark for more information.

7 Region 1 Zones A & B Spring Social, June 15 th, 2018 Roaring Spring Lions Building Don t Miss this Legendary Entertainer Michael J Facciani In 1980, what seemed to be an unbelievable story began to unfold. After enjoying the voice of a singer in his church, Michael said a simple prayer. Lord, if you give me a voice, I will sing for you. Over the course of several short months, something happened. A rich baritone voice began to develop with no previous vocal training. The last time he had sung was in the second grade glee club. After learning what a vibrato was, he again said a simple prayer. Lord, I think I need one of those. The very next morning, a professional vibrato was evident. Michael subsequently took six vocal lessons from an opera teacher to better understand his voice. At only 5 feet 6 inches tall and 170 pounds, the most common remark has been, How does a voice like that come out of a little body like yours? Over the years, his voice has been compared many times, for those who remember, to the late Robert Goulet. Michael has been encouraged to keep sharing the miracle of receiving his voice through a simple prayer. He has completed 7 music projects and recently began a mainstream musical production called; Turn Back The Hands Of Time, which he performs in theaters and performing arts venues across the country. Information on this production can be found at TurnBackTheHands.com The Region 1 Lions Clubs will be holding their annual Social on Friday, June 15th, You are invited to attend. This will truly be a night of fun and socialization. Don t miss this opportunity to meet your Lions friends, have a great dinner and enjoy premier entertainment. Please complete the form below and return with your check. Also, please be sure to share this with your club. Thank You, 2 nd VDG & Zone Chairperson John Harker & Zone Chairperson Susan Edwards Date: Friday June 15 th, 2018 Time: Social 5:45 PM Dinner: 6:30 PM Roaring Spring Lions Building, Shawnee Park, Roaring Spring PA Dinner: Roast Pork, Mashed Potatoes, Stuffing Vegetable, Salad, Desert & Drinks Entertainment: Michael Facciani Dress: Casual Cost: $16 per person due June 6 th, 2018 Payable To: Susan Edwards, 1639 Timberline Drive, Altoona PA Club: $ Amount Enclosed: $16: Members Attending (Names)
