1 INVERNESS June 2015 Message from our President... SERTOMA Newsletter. This newsletter means that the Sertoma year is almost over. We had the chance to celebrate the things we achieved in our Installation Banquet on May 6 at Citrus Hills. With special guests Director Steve Brodie and Development Chair Harvey Rhinehart on hand we had the opportunity to congratulate those who worked hard, install the new leaders, and give out some money and recognition as well. New officers were installed, including President Wayne Bardsley, Pres-Elect Mark Avery, Secretary Rainer Jakob, Treasurer Susan Healy, Directors Bud Osborn and George Bendtsen, and yours truly as Chairman of the Board. We gave money to the Sertoma Youth Ranch, the Speech and Hearing Foundation, the local Sertoma Speech and Hearing Clinic, Camp Endeavor, and Boy Scout Troop 302. Our Service to Mankind winner, Dorene Bettis, was honored for her fundraising effort Yard Sale for the Troops, which raises funds for supplies for military members stationed overseas, especially those in war zones. And Susan Healy won our Sertoman of the Year award for stepping up to the plate when it was needed during a difficult time. She has gotten the books straightened out and ready to move ahead smoothly for the new year. The food was good, as was the fellowship. It was a great event as always. On May 2, we also participated in a couple of things. A number of members marched in the Veteran's Parade, along with our trailer, to celebrate a belated welcome home for Vietnam Era vets. Along with that was a Sertoma display put up at the Inverness Subway, and a Pie the Subway Guy event for the Speech and Hearing Center. If that wasn't enough, Rainer, Bud, and I handed out earplugs at the Citrus County speedway to place emphasis on hearing health and noise for Better Speech and Hearing Month. We were proud to participate at the County Commission to speak against the movement of the veterans' monuments from their location in front of the Old Courthouse. As many know, Sertoma was key in getting the monuments placed there. We had promised the families that we would not allow them to be moved, and we did our best to keep that promise by speaking to the commission to urge them not to move them. Our efforts, along with a plan developed by Sophia Diaz- Fonseca, and the input of others, carried the day as the commission not only voted to keep the monuments in place, but dedicated $12,000 to make the site better. It was a proud day for those of us who have not forgotten that Sertoma still stands for National Heritage. We have begun preparations in earnest for the Patriotic Evening on July 3 at Liberty Park. We will be selling our usual array of items, and need you there to help make out first fundraiser of the new year a success. Other events are in the planning stages as well. We will need all of you to be there to make them happen. This is the last newsletter of the year, and I wish to thank those that worked hard to make our year a success, and those who helped us through the more difficult times. I am proud to have served you as President again, and am looking forward to sitting in the audience again. Our new leaders are coming in with a lot of experience, but with recharged batteries to help put our club back at the top. I wish them well, and will do what I can to make their year a great one.
