1 14-Announcer February 2019 Page 1 District Governor Message It s great to have our newsletter, The Announcer, back in publication. I congratulate and thank Marie D Arcangelo for taking on the position of the newsletter editor. Please read this publication to find out the latest news in our District. We re moving into the time frame when clubs will be choosing their leadership teams for next year and the VDGs will increase their training so they can find themselves in the position to lead District 14-A with confidence. Please make a commitment to serve as an officer, either in your club, or in our District once you start, you won t go back. There are many resources to help you. Myself, the PDGs, VDGs and Global Service-Leadership- Membership Chairs can offer their knowledge and insight to help you learn. Check out the LCI website (lionsclubs.org), take courses online at Lions University (lionsuniversity.org) and plan to attend district zone meetings, workshops and state symposiums (held twice a year in Harrisburg). We are volunteers and our time is precious but consider making the leap into a leadership role. We are the largest service organization in the world, but in the past years our membership in the US has decreased. If we increase our membership, we can have a greater impact on our service. Invite someone you know to a service project and show them the joy you feel as a Lion helping in service to others. International President Gudrun has asked us to invite more females to join the Lions. I would like to see our district female membership increase from 28% to 35%. Just getting someone to join your club shouldn t be the end of your relationship with that new Lion. Sponsors, please engage your new member in service projects so you can retain them as a club member. Reporting your club s service projects is one of the most important duties of the club secretary. LCI depends on our clubs to provide services to the community. The reason why we must report our service, is so that Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) can be awarded grants from large corporations which look at our worldwide tallies of monthly service reports before they decide to give LCIF a donation. Clubs donations sent annually to LCIF will not provide the amount of funds needed for grants and disaster relief funds awarded by LCIF. My space is limited this month, so I ll end here. Please see page 2 for dates to remember. I recently forwarded the District Directory information to Club Presidents and Secretaries. If anyone else needs access, please contact me (rrd82749@yahoo.com). Our New Announcer Editor Happy New Year to all my fellow lions! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Marie D Arcangelo and I m the President of the Langhorne Lions Club. I recently volunteered to fill the position of Editor of the District 14-A Announcer. I joined the Langhorne Lions Club in January I have served as Secretary and 2nd Vice President in the past, and President from July present. I feel that the 14-A Announcer is a great tool to let everyone know what s going on in other clubs, ie. news, events, and fundraisers in addition to staying up to speed with our District Governor and Vice District Governors. I ask all clubs to please send your articles and flyers to me by the 25th of each month so they can be included in our newsletter. My address is murreeb@verizon.net and I look forward to sharing lots of interesting info from all our clubs!

By Helen Steiner Rice Special Leo Project ~ PETER S DRIVE The Souderton Area Leo Clubs are spearheading a District project to raise funds for Peter Zucca. Peter attends the local high school and is an amputee who has helped many individuals and their families through hard times with his fundraising efforts. He is a Hometown Hero and his fellow classmates are trying to get enough money to surprise Peter with a car with hand-driving controls and driving lessons for his 16 th birthday. Please read his story below and if you would like to make a donation, the information appears at the bottom of the page. Peter Zucca, the founder of The Peter Powerhouse Foundation, is a freshman at Souderton Area High School. His battle with cancer has been a hard journey with fifteen O.R. visits and an unfortunate right-leg amputation. With everything he has been through, he continues to make wishes come true for others and supports so many families and hospitals, raising over $300, Since he has done so much for others, we wanted to make his 16 th birthday something truly memorable for him. Our Leo Clubs are hoping to partner with you to provide Peter with $2,500 to equip a car with special driving controls and $2,000 for the necessary driving lessons. But wait When presented to our middle schoolers, they asked, Why stop there? Let s get him enough money for a car too. What a testament to the power of positive thinking of teens. Thank you for any and all donations for Peter Zucca. Make checks payable to: Mail to: Upper Perkiomen Lions Club Upper Perkiomen Lions Club Mary Bonar, Secretary P. O. 7 February 2019 Page 7 NEWS from the Lions District 14-A Charitable Foundation February 2019 Issue Tax Advice Consider RMD Donation to the District Foundation If you are 70 1/2 or older and have IRA(s), gifting some or all of your required RMD using the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) may be a great way to both benefit the charity and reduce the taxes you pay. For some Lions and Lioness, a QCD may have distinct advantages over a regular charitable contribution: A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) counts toward satisfying your Required Minimum Distribution. You can take a QCD whether or not you itemize deductions on your tax return. If you use the standard deduction, you would generally receive no tax benefit from a regular charitable contribution. A QCD is not included in your adjusted gross income (AGI). This could be a benefit because AGI is used to calculate certain other taxes and benefits. The regular charitable contribution deduction is typically limited to no more than 50% of AGI. This AGI limit does not apply to a Qualified Charitable Distribution. Since the District Foundation is a 501c3 organization, it qualifies for Qualified Charitable Distributions. The QCD rules state that the check from your financial institution must be made payable directly to the Charity as follows: District 14A Charitable Foundation, Inc. ATTN: Donald Richardson, Treasurer 516 W. Blooming Glen Dr. Perkasie, PA If you wish to personally send the check to the Foundation, request that the payee on the check to be the District 14A Charitable Foundation, but have the check sent to your home so you can forward it to the Foundation. Need a Club Meeting Program? The Foundation has three different programs available for presentation at your meeting 1. A power point presentation that tells about the Foundation and the services it is providing in our District. Please contact PDG Jim Harrington to schedule your club meeting date at jimaharri35@verizon.net or call at A program which provides education on diabetes, the leading cause of blindness. Please contact Lion Bob Yokl at to schedule a date. 3. A program on our Kids Sight Project which demonstrates the use of the SPOT and Ero-Scan devices. Please contact Lion Bob and Lioness Eleanor Brennan at rjbrennan1936@gmail.com For more information about Foundation activities, please visit our new Website at: Site is presently being re-built
8 February 2019 Page 8 NEWS from the Lions District 14-A Charitable Foundation February 2019 Issue (continued) Kids Sight Program Our Foundation s Kids Sight Program is an easy way for clubs to participate in a community service project and meet the LCI 100 th Anniversary Service Challenge. Voting will take place at the District Convention on April 13, Board positions will be open in the following Regions: At Large (any Region) At Large (any Region) Phila S/W Region Downtown Phila Eye Screening Scheduled for March 30th Our next screening for those in need in downtown Phila will take place on Saturday, March 30th at 1207 Chestnut St starting at 9:00 am. We are expecting about 100 from the area to come and have their eyes examined by Salus University students and receive free glasses from the Foundation. Volunteers are welcome. Please call PDG Jim Harrington at Good Samaritan Awards Good Samaritan Awards provide a way for clubs to honor and recognize club members and community leaders for their outstanding service to the community and the less fortunate. By donating at least $400 to the Foundation, clubs not only recognize outstanding service of individuals in our District, but also support the Charitable Foundation in its efforts to provide for needs throughout our District. This minimum gift to the Foundation for an Award can be accumulated over time. ART AUCTION SCHEDULED Friday, March 15 th Bensalem Township Country Club 2000 Brown Ave, Bensalem The purpose of the auction is to raise funds for the Foundation and to supplement the cost of the future State Council Meeting and State Convention which will be hosted by District 14A.
