We could not have had this success without Betsy Hopson, SBA of AL Board President, Ana Gilleylen, Event Chair, and other committee members, Sharon Smith, Cindy Wester, and Josh Whitmire.

A very special thanks goes to Betsy Hopson who spends countless hours each year working to ensure this event s continued success.

We want to say thank you to all who supported our June 2nd Birmingham Bowl-a-thon. With more than 200 attendees and almost $15,000 raised, this event s tremendous success is undeniable! We could not have had this success without Betsy Hopson, SBA of AL Board President, Ana Gilleylen, Event Chair, and other committee members, Sharon Smith, Cindy Wester, and Josh Whitmire. We are also very grateful to our incredible Birmingham and surrounding area families and our very generous sponsors. We also want to thank Junior League of Birmingham for volunteering the day of the event and Brook Wills for photographing all the action! Completely filling the lanes of Madison Bowling Center, families, sponsors, and other supporters showed up to have a great time for a wonderful cause. Bowling wasn t the only activity to enjoy. Attendees were also blessed by a visit from the Huntsville Rockets football team. Children lit up as the players visited each lane posing for photos and helping them bowl. We can not thank the players enough for helping to make our event even more special! Kids also loved visiting the face painting table, while their parents took time to view all the incredible silent auction and raffle items. The Huntsville event would not have been possible without the very hard work of our committee: Cassie Turner, Stephanie Brazier, Kayla Beard, Stacey Courson, Kathy Long and the entire Martin family. We want to extend a BIG THANK YOU to all of you for your commitment to this event! Because of you, our sponsors, and the hard work of many families and other supporters, this event raised close to $15,000 and an amazing amount of awareness of Spina Bifida and its prevention! From the results of the study, it may be possible to develop a test that can identify women who may not be adequately protected by standard prenatal vitamins, but who might benefit from high dose folic acid therapy prior to conception. We are seeking mothers who have had children with Spina Bifida, and who did not participate in the first phase of this study, which was conducted in We are also enrolling mothers of children who have not had children affected by Spina Bifida to serve as controls for the analysis. Participants in the study are asked to complete a brief online survey and provide a DNA sample using a simple, at-home saliva collection kit that is delivered and returned by mail. For more information and to enroll in the Spina Bifida Genetics Research Project, please go to the website at and select ENROLL. The website and survey are available in both English and Spanish. Upon completion, participants may choose to receive a $10 gift card or we will donate $10 to a Spina Bifida organization of your choice. The Spina Bifida Genetics Research Project includes scientists from UC Berkeley, Stanford University, UC San Francisco, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute and VitaPath Genetics.
