HOMEMADE The great thing about having your own event is that you can do it whenever, however and with whoever you want! Freedom from Torture will be with you every step of the way to make sure that your event is a huge success. Not only will you be able to host and enjoy a fantastic event of your own, every penny that you raise will make an incredible difference to the survivors of torture and organised violence here at Freedom from Torture. We help hundreds of survivors each year and are absolutely committed to making the best possible use of every penny and pound that you directly donate or help us to raise. By Standing Up and Making a Stir for Survivors, a dinner party, lunch, or bake off has the power to change lives. Please do enjoy reading through this pack, full of top tips and hints to host your own event. Don t hesitate to get in touch if you need any help or have any questions: or mtaylor@freedomfromtorture.org
WHAT S IN THIS PACK HOW TO HOST YOUR OWN EVENT TIPS AND TRICKS WHAT YOUR EVENT WILL MEAN TO SURVIVORS MAKING A STIR DONATING
HOW TO HOST YOUR OWN EVENT
HERE S HOW IT WORKS! Choose your event! Host a lunch at work, a picnic in the park or a dinner party in your own home. It s totally up to you! Choose some dishes to cook for your friends. How about choosing recipes from some of the countries that our clients come from? Maybe you could try to make some Afghan flat bread, or some Pakoras from Pakistan? Bring family and friends together to share your chosen tasty dish or meal. You can use our invitations in this pack. Ask for donations to Freedom from Torture don t forget to ask your guests to Gift Aid their donations
TIPS AND TRICKS
SOME TIPS AND EXTRAS! 1. Use our invitation cards in this pack to invite your friends and family to your event! 2. Decorate: we ll send you Freedom from Torture balloons, badges, collection boxes and posters! 3. Host a raffle! Could you ask local businesses to donate to your Big Cook Up? Check with local businesses, restaurants and friendly cooks in the area. You can also contact us here at Freedom from Torture to see if we have any spare raffle prizes, then you can sell raffle tickets for 2 each! 4. Theme it up! Could you hold a world food quiz, or ask people to come dressed up? You could have a prize for the winner to add fun to your evening. 5. Set yourself a stretching but realistic target to raise after all you can always beat it! Don t forget, every penny counts! 6. The main reason that people support a charity is because they were asked! You are inviting people to have a wonderful time, and raise money for charity!
7. Is your Homemade event at work? Matched Giving is a great way to get support from your employer. Approach your line manager and ask them if they run a matched giving scheme whereby your employer match their employees charitable contributions. Matched funding could be invaluable in helping you raise as much money as possible for Freedom from Torture, so do ask the question. If they don t currently offer such a scheme, why not ask them to consider it? Many companies will match your donation for, which will make a huge difference to the total raised. 8. Talk Freedom from Torture! We ve added a list of important Freedom from Torture facts if your guests would like to know more about our vital and specialist work. 9. Social Media! You could write a blog to go on our Freedom from Torture website, and tweet (@freefromtorture, #homemade) or facebook ( Freedomfromtorture) about your event and we ll share with our supporters. 10. Say Thanks! You can thank your guests for helping you help us with our special Freedom from Torture thank you cards.
WHAT YOUR EVENT WILL MEAN TO SURVIVORS
FREEDOM FROM TORTURE Freedom from Torture has been working for over 25 years to assist, protect and promote the rights of torture survivors who arrive in the UK. Since 1985 over 50,000 individuals have been referred to us for help from over 98 different countries. All over the world, many people find themselves thrown into a traumatic and painful experience, often having been targeted because of race, gender, religion, sexuality or political beliefs. Torture is used to intimidate, repress and dehumanise. People are pushed to unbearable extremes of physical and psychological pain. As the only national organisation dedicated solely to the treatment of torture survivors, we take a holistic approach to rehabilitation, catering for the unique needs of torture survivors. We provide medical opinion, forensic documentation of torture, psychological therapies and support as well as practical help for people who have survived the most horrific abuses of human rights. Thanks to the generous spirit of our supporters, we can assist hundreds of people each year to survive these appalling experiences and begin to rebuild their lives. By Standing up and Making a Stir for Survivors by holding your own Homemade event you can be part of making a HUGE difference.

MAKING A STIR
IT S NOT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY A survivor of torture s sense of self worth is often destroyed to the extent that they are surprised and amazed to hear that people support them and want the best for them. Hosting a Homemade event can show survivors that there are people in the UK who welcome them, who care for them, who want them to continue in their rehabilitation so that they can begin to move on from the most horrific of abuses. Supporting them by hosting a Homemade event makes such a difference to empowering them on the journey to recovery. You can also help spread the word about our important work to your family and friends. Here are some points below: Freedom from Torture has centres across the UK in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Scotland, as well as a presence in Yorkshire and Humberside. Freedom from Torture has been providing specialist care to survivors of torture and organised violence for over 25 years. They help survivors to rebuild their lives through psychological and physical therapies; medical opinion and practical help, and use their evidence and knowledge of the true consequences of torture to speak out against it.
Torture is a global problem but its effects are intensely personal. The people that Freedom from Torture work with come from a wide range of backgrounds; the vast majority of those they see report having been targeted due to their race, ethnic origin, gender, religion, culture or political beliefs. Helping survivors to work through this trauma is at the heart of Freedom from Torture s work. They provide holistic, therapeutic support at their centres and document the forensic evidence of torture in the form of medico-legal reports. Freedom from Torture also works to influence governments to help ensure that survivors rights are protected and those responsible for torture are held to account. Each person that helps to raise awareness and funds for Freedom from Torture s work through taking part fundraising events such as Homemade, is making a huge contribution to the essential services that Freedom from Torture provides. Thank you for taking part and helping us raise much needed funds! So get together a few friends, cook up a storm in the kitchen and Make a Stir for Survivors!
