The cosolidatio of our two offices ito oe, cetralized locatio i Woodbridge brought our etire team together, while savig the chapter more tha $1 millio over the ext 10 years. We saw sigificat growth i participatio ad fudraisig for may special evets, such as MuckFest MS, preseted by Horizo Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, ad Musical Momets while ew evets ejoyed first-year success! I all, early 20,000 people participated i oe of our 2014 evets! Combied with the results of our sigature evets, Walk MS ad Bike MS, the chapter ejoyed its first positive fiacial fiish sice its realigmet i This is a sigificat accomplishmet, ad I thak ad cogratulate you all for your role i supportig this effort! We cotiued to offer a multitude of programs ad services throughout the year, icludig our Computer Outreach Program, self-help groups, educatioal workshops ad fiacial assistace to those i eed. We also cotiued our exceptioal relatioship with five MS Ceters throughout our service territory. Lookig ahead at 2015, we ll be addig some ew evets to our schedule: MS Cycle for the Cure, Climb to the Top, MS Rock for a Cure ad MS Hoboke Bar Crawl. Whe we were t sure about resources ad help i the commuity, the NJ Metro Chapter showed great care ad commitmet to people affected by MS. I will always remember that my academic career bega with support from the Natioal MS Society! SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE! REUNION WITH A SCHOLAR Over the last 20 years the chapter awarded more tha $500,000 i scholarships to college studets who are livig with MS or have a paret with MS. Oe scholar recetly reuited with a chapter board member ad former chapter presidet to tell them just how much his scholarship has meat to him ad his family. Islam Fayed first came to the chapter i 2006 seekig help for his dad, who lived with progressive MS. His family was experiecig some fiacial difficulties ad iquired about assistace eligibility. Islam leared about, ad the applied to, our chapter scholarship program. He was happy to qualify as a scholarship recipiet to help defray the costs of udergraduate school. After college graduatio, Islam decided to atted medical school. The chapter offers a local scholarship opportuity to studets livig with MS or have a paret with MS. Studets must: Live withi the chapter s service area: Berge, Essex, Hudso, Huterdo, Mercer, Middlesex, Momouth, Morris, Ocea, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Uio ad Warre couty. 6 6 MS CONNECTION: WINTER 2014 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD PRESENTED TO RUTH COWAN Every year the Natioal MS Society presets the Lifetime Achievemet Award to voluteers with 35 or more years of service i the movemet toward a world free of MS. The Society ad New Jersey Metro Chapter are proud to bestow this year s hoor o Ruth Cowa, a physical therapist ad co-fouder of Swim-I. Thirty-ie years ago, Ruth recogized the eed for aquatic therapy for people livig with MS ad cofouded the Swim-I program held at the JCC o the Palisades i Teafly, NJ. Swim-I a free, oce-a-week therapeutic swimmig program has provided people with MS a opportuity for supervised exercise, as well as time to socialize with their peers. Sice its iceptio i 1975, Ruth has voluteered more tha 3,000 hours of her time ad professioal skill as program supervisor. By establishig a relatioship with the Society, Ruth Cowa reached out to those with MS that could beefit from aquatic therapy. At the same time, she mobilized umerous voluteers through the Natioal Coucil of Jewish Wome (NCJW), developig a collaborative effort betwee the Society ad NCJW. NCJW voluteers assist the swimmers i the water ad the dressig room, as well as gettig to ad from their cars. Over the years, Swim-I has had a icredible impact o so may lives; through the years both the swimmers ad voluteers have ot oly shared positive experieces, but support as well. The chapter is extremely proud to be a part of Swim-I, a woderfully iovative program with such logevity. This past year, Ruth relocated to Dallas, Texas, to be ear her family. Still, Ruth makes time to the visit the program ad cotiues to led her experiece by as a cosultat. Ruth Cowa is a pioeer ad a hero to may her family, frieds, ad the may people with MS that she has provided aquatic therapy for. All of us i the MS commuity are better for kowig Ruth ad are amazed at the positive impact she has so may lives. This year, we are happy to hoor Ruth as a recipiet of the Lifetime Achievemet Award.

7 NATIONALMSSOCIETY.ORG CONGRATULATIONS PETER TARRICONE! LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECEIPENT The New Jersey Metro Chapter also salutes aother NJ residet, Peter G. Tarricoe. Peter is a recipiet of the prestigious Natioal MS Society Lifetime Achievemet Award. Peter bega his egagemet as a voluteer fudraiser i 1970 ad has remaied active with the Society sice. He served as a chapter Board of Trustee from 1979 to 2000, ad voluteered as board chair for three years i the 1980s. He cotiued his work with the Society o the Natioal Board of Directors ad the Natioal Advisory Coucil. Peter curretly chairs the Isurace Committee ad serves o the Audit ad Executive Committees. Peter was istrumetal i the formatio of Fast Forward ad curretly chairs both the Fast Forward Board of Maagers ad the Fast Forward oversight committee. Cogratulatios Peter! BIG CHEERS FOR BIKE MS for the past 21 years, raised more tha $500,000, with a curret lifetime total of $513,150! Special thaks for their icredible dedicatio to Bike MS! Our chapter is proud of our top Bike MS teams ad idividuals who have achieved amazig success this year. These sigificat milestoes were celebrated at the 2014 Natioal Leadership Coferece i Dallas this November. 8 8 MS CONNECTION: WINTER 2014 NEW STUDIES ON COGNITION AT KESSLER FOUNDATION Researchers at Kessler Foudatio received more tha $2.1 millio i 2014 to fud four ew iitiatives studyig cogitio ad cogitive rehabilitatio i persos with MS. Dr. Nacy Chiaravalloti, Director of the Neuropsychology ad Neurosciece Laboratory ad Traumatic Brai Ijury Laboratory, received two awards, oe to coduct a radomized cotrol trial to study impaired iformatio processig speed, the primary cogitive problem i persos with MS. This research will examie the efficacy of speed of processig traiig i MS ad its impact o everyday fuctioig ad quality of life. The secod trial will be the first radomized cliical trial evaluatig a memory techique to improve ew learig ad memory i idividuals with progressive MS. There are o treatmets for impaired memory i persos with progressive MS, ad the techique studied i the curret trial has bee show to be effective i persos with relapsig-remittig MS. Dr. Joh DeLuca, Seior Vice Presidet for Research at Kessler Foudatio, will spearhead a cliical trial to examie the efficacy of methylpheidate a well-kow psycho-stimulat i treatig fatigue experiece by idividuals with MS. Drs. DeLuca ad Chiaravalloti received fudig to establish the MS Collaborative Network of New Jersey (MSCNNJ). While rehabilitatio professioals ted to specialize i either cogitive or physical fuctioig, this grat will study how the two iteract ad examie potetial treatmet. Lastly, Dr. Laure Strober, Seior Research Scietist i the Neuropsychology & Neurosciece Laboratory, will be coductig a study to improve the cliical utility of the most commoly used test to assess impaired iformatio processig speed, by developig ormative data that take ito accout age, geder, ad educatio i order to provide ormative chage curves that will allow cliicias ad researchers to kow what is a meaigful chage o the SDMT over time. All participats will develop a career pla, participate i workshops ad master classes, ad lear how to approach galleries ad retailers. Staff will coduct portfolio reviews, promote the participats work to galleries, boutiques, ad other retailers, licese works for reproductio, help artists build olie portfolios, ad host group art exhibits.
