For the last 14 years Tonari Gumi produced the Premier Tasting event featuring sake provided by local suppliers. This event has become one the most exciting and well attended event in the ese Community in the Lower Mainland. On the 15th anniversary this event, the ese Community Volunteers Association (Tonari Gumi) is making significant changes that will up the fun factor. It will now feature sake, beer, wine and whiskey with connections to the ese community! Taste products from Powell Street Craft Brewery, Kanazawa Wines, Odd Society, the ese Consulate and more. This year, we invite you to be a key sponsor in our new event, 2016 Spirits. With over 350 people in attendance, your company brand will be a big part a festive and positive community building fundraising event that supports programs for seniors and programs at our ese Community Resource Centre. Program A variety alcoholic spirits connected with and the ese Community vendors supplying wines, beer, sake and whisky will be on hand for patrons to sample them. The event program will also include: Performance by Tim Tamashiro, jazz singer and the host Tonic, a nightly jazz program on CBC Radio 2. Sponsored by Coast Hotels Ocean Wise Sushi Roll Challenge chefs will conjure up their vision the Spirit Roll that will be tasted by three foodies and all audience members. 4 The Cause 1,000 Cranes Fundraising Initiative In ese culture, cranes are seen as symbols longevity, good luck, happiness, love and fidelity. It has become a popular subject origami with the myth that folding 1,000 origami cranes will make a wish you make come true. At Tonari Gumi we have over 300 volunteers whose spirit embody that the crane. Their hands are like the wings the cranes protecting, caring for and bringing happiness to the lives our ese Canadian and new immigrant seniors. Sadako and the Thousand Cranes Children around the world know the story Sadako Sasaki, a 12-yearold in with the goal folding 1,000 cranes in her hospital in hope surviving radiation sickness, resulting from exposure to radiation from the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in August, After folding 644 cranes, she passed away on October 25, In her honour, her classmates folded the remaining cranes. Our volunteers and staff have been reaching out to help our seniors remain independent and healthy since For decades, ese Canadians and new immigrant seniors have come to rely on Tonari Gumi as a home-awayfrom home, a place to meet friends, and a place to find support. Thanks to the funds earned through events such as Spirits, Tonari Gumi is able to provide services in both ese and English to the homebound and those experiencing early stages dementia, to deliver ese meals-on-wheels, to visit those who are isolated and alone in various seniors facilities, to assist those experiencing elder abuse and to help those marginalized due to language and culture.
