1 Bulletin Monday 23rd May 2016 Meets weekly at Benito s Restaurant 1196 Nepean Highway, Mount Eliza I S S U E N O / pm for 6.30pm start P E TE S PATTER May is Youth Service Month Hello Rotarians On some occasions, meetings of our Club do not go according to plan. Such was the case last Monday evening when our speaker pulled out at the very last minute, providing Program Director David Wheeler with a quandary. Would he provide us with a song and dance routine or, mercifully, an update from DG Merv on his time to date in charge of District Fortunately the latter prevailed, and with around 15 minutes to prepare, Merv provided us with an intimate insight into the big task he and Chris took on after being nominated several years earlier. Even though you went over time by a couple of minutes, thank you for stepping up Merv. Our House Committee under the chairmanship of Tom Goulding, has been diligently looking into club meeting procedures and running of the Club outside of meetings. Suggestions to update and improve current operating procedures will be put to membership in the near future for scrutiny and comment. Just a reminder that Bowel scan kits are now available through Geoff Kaye, and will be available at our meeting at Benitos on 30 th May. Cost of the kit is $15 with the requirement of returning to Bowel scan direct by 30 th June. This week s gathering will be at CFA Mt Martha 6 for Rotary Club of Mount Martha PO Box 342, Mornington 3931 District Governor 9820: Merv Williams Assistant Governor 9820: Linda Morris President: Peter Warren peter.warren5@bigpond.com Secretary: Barrie Sweeney lorbar@internode.on.net Apologies and Guests: Barrie Sweeney by Monday midday at the latest lorbar@internode.on.net Bulletin Editor: Colin Stokes Contributions by midday Thursday please chstokes@optusnet.com.au Website Editor: Colin Stokes chstokes@optusnet.com.au Peter Warren President
2 MOUNT MARTHA ROTARY CLUB OF MOUNT MARTHA PREVIOUS MEETING AT BENITO S Members present 27 Apologies: Bill Cummins, Byron Groves, John Marshall, Peter Rawlings, Joy Salmon, Roger Skipsey, Colin Stokes, Dee Tozer, John Waterhouse LOA : Freda Bowie-Horoway, Wayne Norris **************************************************************************************************** Notes from Previous meeting Moments before our meeting opened we received word that the expected guest speaker from White Line Group was unavailable. A quick whip-around secured none other than our current District Governor Merv Williams who promised to give us a run down on his year thus far in the top office in our District. David Wheeler reminded us that next week we would be at the Fire Brigade. Tim asked us to be sure when parking, not to block the exit for the fire truck in case of a call out. Geoff Kaye informed us that the Bowel scan kits would soon be available and the cost this year is $ Phyllis is planning mock job interviews at Balcombe Grammar on August 11 and 12. This is a great program for members to engage with young people preparing to enter the workforce for the first time. Treasurer Steve Daly indicated the annual fees for will be $200.00, a reduction of $ Rob Davies took the chair and introduced our very own DG, Merv saying. Merv and Chris have done RCMM proud and it has been a pleasure to serve under you. Merv said that David Crane, Rob Marks and David Piper were a great encouragement and after being tapped on the shoulder it took 2 weeks under Elizabeth Celi s leadership to close the deal. Tom Barrett and Peter Warren have also been great supporters. Byron served as District Treasurer and Peter Rawlings as District Conference Chair. He added. We have only 44 sleeps to go. With 49 club visits in the first 5 months, every Monday to Thursday was taken up. Then there are committee and conference meetings to add to a busy schedule. Under Merv s leadership our District grew by 15 members. He explained from his experience in the USA there is a major focus on retaining and attracting members. That focus also includes attention to a changing world. From HQ, Chicago the word is, do whatever it takes to increase membership. If it means bi-weekly meetings, OK. It doesn t have to be the way it always was. Engage social media and concentrate on projects. Our District now has 2 Rotaract Clubs on the Peninsula and an Interact Club at Monterey High School, The Pines and the further possibility of Rotaract Clubs at Carrum Downs and Langwarrin. Merv spoke of the need for Rotarians, in fact anybody dealing with young people to be covered by not just a Working with Children accreditation but also the Rotary Form 3 declaration. Rotary has a clean sheet which is a credit to our organisation but we need to be mindful of any situation that could come back to bite us and place us before the current Royal Commission dealing with assaults against children.

4 May TONIGHTS is Youth MEETING Service AND DIARY Month DATES Rotary International's Structured Programs for Youth Service are: Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Youth Exchange. The month of May is designated as Youth Service Month to focus on all Rotary activities that support the development of young people up to the age of 30. **************************************************************************** Has your club been active in the Youth Exchange Program? The District Youth Exchange Committee have received a large number of expressions of interest from students right across the district who wish to become Rotary Youth Exchange Students in 2017, and are busy working on placements for July inbound arrivals. At present, they have more inbound applications than available placements and are seeking the support of clubs by becoming involved in the program and host a student. The number of students the district hosts in 2016/17 will ultimately dictate the number of outbound placements available for our local students wishing to embark on this life changing experience. Has you club been active in YEP in recent years? If not, what is holding you back? Please contact the YEP Chair Dan Kraan on or chairman_yep@distrct9820.org for more information. - See more at: Jonathan recently provided us with details of the clubs involvement and progress with the various youth programs. Phyllis is arranging mock interviews at Balcombe Grammer to help develop interview skills in students, a great program.

Not only did this Council grant clubs more freedom in determining their meeting schedule and membership, it also approved an increase in per capita dues of $4 a year for three years. The increase will be used to enhance Rotary s website, improve online tools, and add programs and services to help clubs increase membership. The Council is an essential element of Rotary s governance. Every three years, members from around the world gather in Chicago to consider proposed changes to the policies that govern the organization and its member clubs. Measures that are adopted take effect 1 July. The tone for this year was set early, when the RI Board put forth two proposals that increase flexibility. The first measure allows clubs to decide to vary their meeting times, whether to meet online or in person, and when to cancel a meeting, as long as they meet at least twice a month. The second allows clubs flexibility in choosing their membership rules and requirements. Both passed. Read more... See also Below Merv s Experience. ****************************************************************************************** From Merv s Talk on Monday night we heard him emphasize the changes being promoted by RI as per the above article. Mervs experience in the USA was that there is a major focus on retaining and attracting members. That focus also includes attention to a changing world. From HQ, Chicago the word is, do whatever it takes to increase membership. If it means bi-weekly meetings, OK. It doesn t have to be the way it always was. Engage social media and concentrate on projects. The club is currently looking at its operations with a view to the future.
